The 2nd highest entry is a folk song based on "There Was A Crooked Man". Marvin Gaye also gets another entry.

In this week's chart, Millie holds firm at the top and may well end the Beatles' run, but by climbing to #2 they ensure that all their hits so far have peaked at least that high.
That the Beatles might not make it is hinted at by a high entry at #5. I did mention when Mary Wells's last single just failed to chart that her classic one was up next.
There are, however, 2 huge ones in the next week and another in the week after.

-- ( -- ) Shangri-La - Robert Maxwell
A massive 9 new entries this week. Last week I was just noticing how, whilst the top end of the chart was such high quality, I was struggling for numbers nearer the bottom and perhaps could have kept some falling hits in longer rather than charting what was around just because I needed entries. And, of course, that there was no way I could expand the chart to a top 40 yet.
"My Guy" was written by Smokey Robinson, a singer we have come across before (As Bill "Smokey" Robinson), lead singer with The Miracles who had a top 10 hit early in 1961. Mary Wells was well liked by the Beatles, who asked her to come to England and perform with them, so I don't think they'd begrudge her getting to #1 ahead of them.
Fellow diva Dionne Warwick enters with another Bacherach-David song. Potentially could restrict Mary Wells to just a single week on top. She got to #2 with "Anyone Who Had A Heart" and will obviously be trying to go one better. (And if she does get there she'll be battling with Cilla Black again in a few weeks time, just in case that lady has ambitions. Last time they recorded the same song so Dionne was able to keep her out altogether. This time they'll simply be fighting over superiorty).
Slowing things down now for Gerry & The Pacemakers, but "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" really is a beautiful song, written by Gerry Marsden himself, and their biggest hit in the USA.
"Tell It On The Mountain" isn't a big hit for Peter Paul & Mary but it has entered, and it's an old folk song. The band entering at #14 may have a go at an old folk song too with their next effort...

21 ( 27 ) Tell It On The Mountain - Peter Paul & Mary 22 ( 19 ) Ain't Nothing You Can Do - Bobby Bland (#19) 23 ( 28 ) Don't Turn Around - Merseybeats 24 ( 29 ) The Matador - Major Lance 25 ( 15 ) Viva Las Vegas - Elvis Presley (#5) 26 ( 30 ) Ronnie - Four Seasons 27 ( 18 ) World Without Love - Peter And Gordon (#6) 28 ( 25 ) Think - Brenda Lee (#24) 29 ( -- ) The Spartans - Sounds Incorporated 30 ( 23 ) Everything's Alright - Mojos (#18)
-- ( 21 ) Suspicion - Terry Stafford (#7) -- ( 22 ) Mockin' Bird Hill - Migil 5 (#11) -- ( 26 ) The Way You Do The Things You Do - Temptations (#12)
-- ( -- ) Angry At The Big Oak Tree - Frank Ifield -- ( -- ) Non Ho L'eta Per Amarti - Gigliola Cinquetti -- ( -- ) Ebb Tide - Larry Welch
It is just too tight at the top! With last week's entries both climbing and yet another new entry at number 4. Roy Orbison has peaked at #2 more often than any other artist though, and his entry "Workin' For The Man" entered at #5 in 1962 but only peaked at #3. So it may still be the Motown ladies fighting for the top.
Meanwhile, Merseybeaters the Fourmost have moved away from doing Lennon & McCartney songs to do an uptempo catchy song which became their biggest UK hit.

2 May 1964:
1 ( 4 ) It's Over - Roy Orbison < 2nd #1 > 2 ( 1 ) My Guy - Mary Wells (#1[2]) 3 ( 2 ) Walk On By - Dionne Warwick (#2[1]) 4 ( 3 ) Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying - Gerry & The Pacemakers (#3) 5 ( 8 ) A Little Loving - Fourmost 6 ( 9 ) Baby Let Me Take You Home - Animals 7 ( 11 ) Hubble Bubble (Toil And Trouble) - Manfred Mann 8 ( -- ) Always And Ever - Johnny Kidd & The Pirates 9 ( 5 ) My Boy Lollipop - Millie (#1[3]) 10 ( -- ) I Will - Billy Fury
11 ( 7 ) Dead Man's Curve - Jan & Dean (#5) 12 ( 6 ) Can't Buy Me Love - Beatles (#2[1]) 13 ( 10 ) Gone - Shirley Bassey (#10) 14 ( 18 ) Don't Throw Your Love Away - Searchers 15 ( 15 ) Hey Bobba Needle - Chubby Checker 16 ( 13 ) Juliet - Four Pennies (#10) 17 ( 12 ) Don't Let The Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man) - Serendipity Singers (#7) 18 ( 21 ) Tell It On The Mountain - Peter Paul & Mary 19 ( 19 ) That's The Way Boys Are - Lesley Gore 20 ( 23 ) Don't Turn Around - Merseybeats
21 ( 16 ) You're A Wonderful One - Marvin Gaye (#13) 22 ( -- ) Constantly - Cliff Richard 23 ( 24 ) The Matador - Major Lance 24 ( 29 ) The Spartans - Sounds Incorporated 25 ( 14 ) Tell Me When - Applejacks (#1[2]) 26 ( 26 ) Ronnie - Four Seasons 27 ( 17 ) Move Over Darling - Doris Day (#3) 28 ( -- ) Kiss Me Sailor - Diane Renay 29 ( 22 ) Ain't Nothing You Can Do - Bobby Bland (#19) 30 ( 20 ) Hello Dolly - Louis Armstrong (#3)
-- ( 25 ) Viva Las Vegas - Elvis Presley (#5) -- ( 27 ) World Without Love - Peter And Gordon (#6) -- ( 28 ) Think - Brenda Lee (#24) -- ( 30 ) Everything's Alright - Mojos (#18)
-- ( -- ) Love Me With All Your Heart - Ray Charles Singers -- ( -- ) My Girl Sloopy - Vibrations -- ( -- ) Wish Someone Would Care - Irma Thomas -- ( -- ) I'm So Proud - Impressions
In my last post I suggested Roy Orbison might not reach #1 but I knew he would. The rest of the top 3 go down and the Fourmost will be trying to break into there next week, along with this weeks highest entrants.
Those breakers are a sing-a-long song by Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, for which I have seen a Showaddywaddy cover from 1980 on youtube but I don't recall it among that group's singles. In any case, Motorhead outdid them later when it came to covering Johnny Kidd & The Pirates songs...
A more successfully covered song was "I Will", which became a big hit for Ruby Winters at the end of 1977.
Cliff Richard comes in behind, a song that probably won't be as big a hit for him as his recent #3 "I'm The Lonely One". And Diane Renay is still singing about sailors, her previous hit being "Navy Blue".
"My Girl Sloopy" is the same song as "Hang On Sloopy" which would appear at the start of 1965 but won't be considered. Given it failed to chart this week, the McCoys would probably fail too anyway.

9 May 1964:
1 ( 1 ) It's Over - Roy Orbison < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 5 ) A Little Loving - Fourmost 3 ( 3 ) Walk On By - Dionne Warwick (#2[1]) 4 ( 2 ) My Guy - Mary Wells (#1[2]) 5 ( 4 ) Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying - Gerry & The Pacemakers (#3) 6 ( 8 ) Always And Ever - Johnny Kidd & The Pirates 7 ( 6 ) Baby Let Me Take You Home - Animals (#6) 8 ( 10 ) I Will - Billy Fury 9 ( 7 ) Hubble Bubble (Toil And Trouble) - Manfred Mann (#7) 10 ( -- ) You're My World - Cilla Black

21 ( 20 ) Don't Turn Around - Merseybeats (#20) 22 ( 12 ) Can't Buy Me Love - Beatles (#2[1]) 23 ( 28 ) Kiss Me Sailor - Diane Renay 24 ( 19 ) That's The Way Boys Are - Lesley Gore (#19) 25 ( 16 ) Juliet - Four Pennies (#10) 26 ( 24 ) The Spartans - Sounds Incorporated (#24) 27 ( -- ) (Just Like) Romeo & Juliet - Reflections 28 ( 17 ) Don't Let The Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man) - Serendipity Singers (#7) 29 ( 23 ) The Matador - Major Lance (#23) 30 ( 26 ) Ronnie - Four Seasons (#26)
-- ( 21 ) You're A Wonderful One - Marvin Gaye (#13) -- ( 25 ) Tell Me When - Applejacks (#1[2]) -- ( 27 ) Move Over Darling - Doris Day (#3) -- ( 29 ) Ain't Nothing You Can Do - Bobby Bland (#19) -- ( 30 ) Hello Dolly - Louis Armstrong (#3)
-- ( -- ) You're The One - Kathy Kirby
A bit of a shuffle around in the top 5 and near the top in general as the Fourmost now claim the #2. Meanwhile another Liverpool artist gets the highest entry. Cilla Black had a previous hit "Love Of The Loved" written by Lennon-McCartney, but she had to take a bow to Dionne Warwick for "Anyone Who Had A Heart". For her 3rd single they chose a foreign song and translated it for her. Originally "Il Mio Mondo" in Italian, and written by Umberto Bindi.
Reworking his own song, Chuck Berry gets in the chart with a song about driving and seat belts. Previously the tune was used for School Days. This became his 2nd biggest ever UK hit, peaking at #3. (We'd rather forget what his biggest was).
Who's Flingel Bunt? A character created by actor Richard O'Sullivan, who was a friend of the Shadows and thus the title of this tune.
"Someone Someone" is actually the first hit on this chart for Brian Poole & The Tremeloes, primarily because 3 of their previous 4 had already been hits for someone else and the other ("I Can Dance") was just too awful. This song is also a cover version, originally by the Crickets, but nobody has yet had a hit with it.

21 ( 27 ) (Just Like) Romeo & Juliet - Reflections 22 ( 18 ) Tell It On The Mountain - Peter Paul & Mary (#18) 23 ( 23 ) Kiss Me Sailor - Diane Renay 24 ( 14 ) My Boy Lollipop - Millie (#1[3]) 25 ( 21 ) Don't Turn Around - Merseybeats (#20) 26 ( 17 ) Dead Man's Curve - Jan & Dean (#5) 27 ( 19 ) Gone - Shirley Bassey (#10) 28 ( -- ) You Got Love - Buddy Holly & The Crickets 29 ( 26 ) The Spartans - Sounds Incorporated (#24) 30 ( 24 ) That's The Way Boys Are - Lesley Gore (#19)

Roy Orbison remains at #1 with Cilla Black threatening, which would be a reverse of the order they reached #1 in the UK. In the UK chart, the Brian Poole & The Tremeloes song peaked at #2 behind Roy Orbison, with them having covered him for their previous hit.
Although "Shout" has been a hit on this chart already I couldn't overlook this version that bursts Lulu onto the scene.
The remainder of the artists who enter have mostly had #1s, Freddie & The Dreamers last year with "You Were Made For Me", Al Hirt recently with "Java" and Buddy Holly's back catalogue still being dug into 5 years after his death. While the Dixie Cups have never charted before, it's a Barry-Greenwich-Spector song and production and that team have given us 3 previous number ones, two of those for the Ronettes.

Still Roy Orbison at #1.
The USA were busy charting both A-sides and B-sides of the Beatles singles and thus "P.S. I Love You" which was originally the UK B-side of "Love Me Do".
Even in a week of few new songs, Barbra Streisand is unable to make her chart debut.

Mary Wells was #1 before Roy Orbison and now she is duetting on the highest new entry with Marvin Gaye, for whom this song is his first ever UK entry (and only spends one week at #50). In the USA this peaks at #19 and he's had solo hits previously (as he has on this chart too).
PJ Proby is famous for having his trousers once split whilst he was on stage. This song was covered in 1981 so may appear on a TOTP repeat fairly soon.
Adam Faith is still around but the hits will be less frequent than they were previously. This one only got to #33 in the UK chart.

As Roy Orbison makes it 6 weeks at #1 it joins only 2 other singles in the retro era to have been #1 for that long, "Pineapple Princess" by Annette Funicello and "Stranger On The Shore" by Mr Acker Bilk.
With a static top 3 its biggest challenger would be the highest new entry this week, with Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells still posing an outside threat. There is, of course, also the possibility of a new entry at #1.
There was something of a battle for the highest entry between two classics, but it was the Swinging Blue Jeans version of "You're No Good" that won out.
One song of interest to enter is the Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightnin'", a blues song recorded about 6 years earlier but I think it was partly popularised by artists like the Rolling Stones being big fans of his.

I keep falling asleep before I get a chance to post these, I have a backlog of scored-up weeks. Perhaps I should compile 2 charts a day but then just post one per day which will make it easier...
20 June 1964:
1 ( 1 ) You're No Good - Swinging Blue Jeans < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 5 ) I Get Around - Beach Boys 3 ( 3 ) Once Upon A Time - Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells 4 ( 2 ) It's Over - Roy Orbison (#1[6]) 5 ( 8 ) Nobody I Know - Peter And Gordon 6 ( 13 ) Ain't She Sweet - Beatles 7 ( 9 ) Three Window Coupe - Rip Chords 8 ( 4 ) You're My World - Cilla Black (#2[3]) 9 ( 16 ) Like Dreamers Do - Applejacks 10 ( 6 ) Hold Me - PJ Proby (#5)
11 ( -- ) Beans In My Ears - Serendipity Singers 12 ( 10 ) I Love Being In Love With You - Adam Faith (#10) 13 ( 14 ) Smokestack Lightnin' - Howlin' Wolf 14 ( 7 ) Shout - Lulu & The Luvvers (#3) 15 ( 15 ) Stop Look And Listen - Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders 16 ( 23 ) Why Not Tonight - Mojos 17 ( 17 ) Can't You See That She's Mine - Dave Clark Five 18 ( 12 ) Here I Go Again - Hollies (#7) 19 ( 11 ) P.S. I Love You - Beatles (#5) 20 ( 29 ) Dimples - John Lee Hooker
21 ( 22 ) Every Little Bit Hurts - Brenda Holloway 22 ( -- ) Rosalyn - Pretty Things 23 ( 18 ) I Love You Baby - Freddie & The Dreamers (#11) 24 ( 24 ) The Very Thought Of You - Rick Nelson (#22) 25 ( -- ) I'll Touch A Star - Terry Stafford 26 ( 20 ) Cotton Candy - Al Hirt (#12) 27 ( 19 ) No Particular Place To Go - Chuck Berry (#4) 28 ( 21 ) A Little Loving - Fourmost (#2[2]) 29 ( 26 ) Chapel Of Love - Dixie Cups (#15) 30 ( -- ) I Won't Forget You - Jim Reeves
-- ( 25 ) Always And Ever - Johnny Kidd & The Pirates (#6) -- ( 27 ) Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt - Shadows (#9) -- ( 28 ) You Got Love - Buddy Holly & The Crickets (#21) -- ( 30 ) (Just Like) Romeo & Juliet - Reflections (#19)
Songs have been banned for all kinds of reasons, but the highest new entry got banned by several radio stations in the USA due to children actually putting beans in their ears, leading to medical problems. Of course, in the USA airplay means so much so that affected its chart position and it stalled at #30.
It is also a rather silly song...

-- ( -- ) Try It Baby - Marvin Gaye
The classic rendition of the old folk song gets the highest new entry. Second behind that a classic from the Four Seasons which was their biggest UK hit until nearly 12 years later. Its B-side was famously covered too. (Whilst many B-sides reach the US top 30 chart, this particular one does not).
A classic jazz hit for Stan Getz although he doesn't seem certain which Gilberto he's performing it with. Millie follows up her #1, whilst B-sides that do seem to be charting are those by the Beach Boys and Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells. No luck for Marvin Gaye's solo single though.

4 July 1964:
1 ( 3 ) House Of The Rising Sun - Animals < 1st #1 > 2 ( 4 ) Rag Doll - Four Seasons 3 ( 1 ) You're No Good - Swinging Blue Jeans (#1[3]) 4 ( 2 ) I Get Around - Beach Boys (#2[2]) 5 ( 12 ) The Girl From Ipanema - Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto 6 ( 5 ) Ain't She Sweet - Beatles (#5) 7 ( 13 ) Sweet William - Millie 8 ( 8 ) Beans In My Ears - Serendipity Singers 9 ( -- ) I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself - Dusty Springfield 10 ( -- ) On The Beach - Cliff Richard
11 ( 9 ) Like Dreamers Do - Applejacks (#9) 12 ( 7 ) Nobody I Know - Peter And Gordon (#5) 13 ( 6 ) Once Upon A Time - Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells (#3) 14 ( 19 ) Don't Worry Baby - Beach Boys 15 ( -- ) It's All Over Now - Rolling Stones 16 ( 14 ) Why Not Tonight - Mojos (#14) 17 ( -- ) The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena) - Jan & Dean 18 ( 10 ) Three Window Coupe - Rip Chords (#7) 19 ( 17 ) Rosalyn - Pretty Things (#17) 20 ( -- ) Alone - Four Seasons
21 ( 25 ) Good Times - Sam Cooke 22 ( 18 ) Dimples - John Lee Hooker (#18) 23 ( 26 ) What's The Matter With You Baby - Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells 24 ( 11 ) It's Over - Roy Orbison (#1[6]) 25 ( 16 ) Smokestack Lightnin' - Howlin' Wolf (#13) 26 ( 23 ) I'll Touch A Star - Terry Stafford (#23) 27 ( 30 ) Tous Les Garcons Et Les Filles - Francoise Hardy 28 ( 15 ) You're My World - Cilla Black (#2[3]) 29 ( -- ) Keep On Pushing - Impressions 30 ( 29 ) I Won't Forget You - Jim Reeves (#29)
-- ( 20 ) Hold Me - PJ Proby (#5) -- ( 21 ) I Love Being In Love With You - Adam Faith (#10) -- ( 22 ) Stop Look And Listen - Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders (#15) -- ( 24 ) Can't You See That She's Mine - Dave Clark Five (#17) -- ( 27 ) Every Little Bit Hurts - Brenda Holloway (#21) -- ( 28 ) Shout - Lulu & The Luvvers (#3)
-- ( -- ) The One To Cry - Escorts
The Animals classic gets to #1 with the Four Seasons behind, that band already getting another hit. It isn't the B-side in this case (which is actually Silence Is Golden) but they were on 2 record labels (VeeJay and Philips) and they were both releasing singles.
Dusty has also two hits within this month, both Bacherach and David songs. This one was her UK release, the other one was released in the UK by someone else. We'll see which version I picked.
Back in 1964 Cliff was more seasonal in the summer than at Christmas. We had "Summer Holiday" last year, now "On The Beach". Behind that, a Bobby Womack song that he didn't originally want the Rolling Stones to cover, but when it got to #1 in the UK and he got nice royalty cheques, he decided it was quite a good idea after all. Soon we will come across the first Jagger-Richards composition. And it will be a song sung by someone else.

21 ( 16 ) Why Not Tonight - Mojos (#14) 22 ( 29 ) Keep On Pushing - Impressions 23 ( 13 ) Once Upon A Time - Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells (#3) 24 ( 23 ) What's The Matter With You Baby - Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells (#23) 25 ( 19 ) Rosalyn - Pretty Things (#17) 26 ( 27 ) Tous Les Garcons Et Les Filles - Francoise Hardy 27 ( -- ) Dang Me - Roger Miller 28 ( 22 ) Dimples - John Lee Hooker (#18) 29 ( 18 ) Three Window Coupe - Rip Chords (#7) 30 ( -- ) Remember Me - Rita Pavone

-- ( -- ) Farmer John - Premiers
With an unchanging top 2, the new entries come from the Nashville Teens, a group of men in their 20s from Surrey, England (and one Welsh member), recording a John D Loudermilk composition. (Remember him from the earlier part of the 60s? He wrote the song "Angela Jones" that was a hit in 1960 and then had a hit himself with "The Language Of Love" at the start of 1962).
The Barron Knights are doing their impersonations of the 1960s artists, applying all of them to the army or navy. They had a run of hits in the 1960s and also the late 70s up to the end of 1980. The concept has charted before though via the Four Preps.
There were 2 versions of Wishin' And Hopin', the Merseybeats recording the other version which reached the UK chart. But I've charted Dusty.
Roger Miller gets his debut near the bottom of the chart. We will of course expect a bigger hit next year.

-- ( -- ) The Ferris Wheel - Everly Brothers -- ( -- ) Everybody Loves Somebody - Dean Martin -- ( -- ) Steal Away - Jimmy Hughes
It has happened again that the best songs on the playlist land on the same week. In this case 3 total classics that I might have expected to all reach #1 but of course they won't all get there, and the Drifters emerge at the head of the pack with the Manfred Mann classic (cover of Exciters song) written by Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, a songwriting partnership that has been successful before entering 2nd with the Beatles only in 3rd place.
The Dean Martin song that fails to enter here actually got to #2 in the USA.

The Drifters classic climbs to the top. Those who recall the 80s retro chart postings might have seen that the Tom Tom Club's version peaked at #3 in the NM chart in 1982. The biggest UK hit version of the song was by Bruce Willis, as will become apparent in another topic around that covers charts from the past. The Drifters never had a UK #1 although their former lead singer, Ben E King, did of course manage one. Two of their songs reached UK #1 as covers, "Such A Night" by Johnnie Ray all the way back in the early 50s (and that song we will come across soon here) and later "Up On The Roof" via Robson & Jerome (original version #2 on this chart, and R&J's only NM hit peaking at #18 in 1995). This one came close.
More classics. The Honeycombs started their career with a bang. This song also had a successful hit cover version in 1977. The Honeycombs themselves never had another UK top 10 hit, I think their second biggest hit peaked at #12 and they had a few much smaller ones. We'll see how any of those get on here.
The Supremes had their first hit right at the start of the career. Now one of their more classic ones.
Billy J Kramer back to doing Lennon-McCartney songs.
Stevie Wonder enters. Famous for his harmonica playing. "Fingertips" didn't make my chart but he has now.
And finally Ken Dodd manages to get into this chart, and that with a song that didn't make the top 30 in the UK, stalling at #31.

I did realise today I have got to the end of July and have not yet done the sporting achievements of the year. I normally do that at the mid-point, i.e. after the last June chart.
Liverpool won the league, something people would get used to. Bill Shankley was their manager. Matt Busby's Manchester United came 2nd. However it was their first title since 1947. Unfortunately Charlton could not replicate their feat in the FA Cup of 1947, instead West Ham won that competition. Liverpool actually won the league only 2 seasons after gaining promotion to the top flight. (That would never happen nowadays would it?). Anyway Leicester did win the League Cup in 1964.
In Scotland, Rangers won everything. League, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup. Inter Milan won the European Cup, whilst Spain won the European Championships.
In tennis, at Wimbledon it was mostly the Australians. In the men's singles, Roy Emerson beat Fred Stolle. Margaret Court reached the final of the women's but was defeated by Brazilian Maria Bueno.
Over in the USA, the Cleveland Browns won the NFL championship, whilst the St Louis Cardinals beat the New York Yankees in the baseball world series.
