- The opening melodic homespun Power pop track on the at the time critically savaged chart topping Ram album, which was the one song for which Paul insists was a direct attack on his "estranged fiancee" John Lennon & his wife Yoko Ono. Not helped at the time, the former Beatles were going through a very acrimonious legal divorce which the media sided against McCartney because he had filed the lawsuit to dissolve the Beatles partnership.. However, the legal process and negotiations were lengthy and the formal dissolution of the partnership took place on 9 January 1975 with Paul effectively winning, not least as his justifications against new manager Allen Klein (employed by the other 3 Beatles against his wishes) were found to be fully justified.
- Written by the group's lead vocalist Ray Dorset and produced by Barry Murray, this T Rex inspired catchy folk rocker peaked at UK #5.
- This uptempo self penned flip-side of the current Lou Adler produced USA chart topping single also appeared as the opening track on the Tapestry album. It was covered via a 1989 hit by Martika.

Eleven more new entries this week from:
- Roy Wood originally wrote this UK #11 for pop vocal group The New Seekers. This folk rock track featuring guitarist Jeff Lynne singing the third verse sounds more like an early period T Rex track to my ears.
- Marc Bolan's UK#1 & USA #10 anthem which went top 20 throughout the world, was written out of his desire to record a track like Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie". This Tony Visconti track featured saxophones played by Ian McDonald of King Crimson; and the Turtles' Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan on backing vocals. However, this was the song that virtually ended the once-solid friendship between Bolan and John Peel, after Peel made clear his lack of enthusiasm for the song on air after playing his advance white label copy. Bolan and Peel only spoke once more before the former's death in 1977.
- Written by Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb, this lead ballad track from the Trafalgar album gave the vocal group their first USA #1 hit. It was a sizeable hit throughout the world where it peaked at Canada #1, Australia #2, etc ... yet it failed to reach the UK top 50.
- Jamaican duo Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths reached UK #11 with their reggae version of the 1966 Crispian St. Peters hit.
- The British reggae group signed to Trojan records reached UK #6 with this cover of the racial song written in 1954 by David I. Arkin and Earl Robinson.
- The debut solo single by the Ohio born singer songwriter was a co-penned & produced with Bob King later period psychedelic rocker peaking at USA #4.
- The Birmingham beat group's Roger Cook, Roger Greenaway, & Tony Macaulay written & produced USA #15 hit, again never made the UK top 50. However, it appeared at #1 on the UK record industry Breakers chart for 1st July 1971 (with the Bee Gees HCYMABH at #2), for singles which had yet to reach the top 50 chart.
- This Ram album effortless folk-pop tune about a man searching for a farm in the middle of nowhere had a promo video made for it by Linda McCartney, although it was never a single it appears as CD1 Track 2 on the 2016 Pure McCartney compilation.
- Written by Joe Cocker and Chris Stainton, this third album (Joe Cocker) lead single blues rock track peaked at UK #22.
- This Where I'm Coming From album cut written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright received much airplay throughout the 1970s due to its lyrics about the likelihood of alien lifeforms and falling in love with it when it appeared. This deliberately McCartney-esque Beatles baroque pop ballad was also the one track on the album which suggests the musical & artistic explosion this Motown artist would produce fairly soon.
- The two Atlantic sophisti-soul pop singers united for a duets album (Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway), with this USA #29 smooth soulful cover of the Carole King composition.

Eight retro rewind entries come from:
- 14 years before Paul Hardcastle's 19: this USA #8 (but million seller, the lack of airplay stopped it going top three) one hit wonder by the very colourful, larger than life, pioneering shock jock DJ, who kept getting fired despite being very popular because of the stunts he pulled off, was then working in Detroit and assembled a medley of "What the World Needs Now Is Love"/"Abraham, Martin and John" as a musical bed with interviews, and speeches of Jack and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King emphasizing tolerance and civil rights over the top of them.
- This seven minute atmospheric much covered USA #14 & UK #22 was written by the Los Angeles rock group, this jazz rock track was inspired by the song "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend". This was the last song recorded by the members of the Doors, according to Ray Manzarek, as well as Morrison's last recorded song to be released in his lifetime.
- This soft rock uptempo female empowerment Tapestry album cut is the title song of the 2014 Broadway musical Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Barbra Streisand covered "Beautiful" as the opening track of her 1971 album Barbra Joan Streisand.
- This USA #63 & UK #1 sophisticated song written and produced by Deke Richards first appeared on the Motown singer's 1970 album Everything Is Everything. However, BBC Radio 1 disc jockey Tony Blackburn featured it heavily on his morning programme and persuaded EMI, who then issued all Tamla Motown material in the UK, to release it as a single (which is ironic considering his then very negative opinion of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On), and the result was a number one hit single
- Taken from the Welsh folk pop singer's second album Earth Song, Ocean Song, this Martine Habib & Bernard Estardy written folk track produced by husband Tony Visconti made UK #46.
- Written by the soft rock group's Robert Lamm, this jazz pop track made USA #7 (AC #1).
- This T-Neck records psychedelic soul cover of the Stephen Stills song peaked at USA #18 (R&B #3).
- The second track on Elton John's third album, Tumbleweed Connection, was a baroque progressive pop track, later covered by Sting. The lyric was written by Bernie Taupin.

Nine more entries this week from:
- The USA #6 & UK #36 roots rock stomper penned by John Fogerty was their final USA top ten hit, and their 4th & final Canadian chart topper for a band who split acrimoniously before the end of 1972.
- The Ram album cut which at the time John Lennon famously misheard the line "ketchup, soup and puree, don't get left behind" (well the song is about having a picnic, and its title was the name of a USA squash additive drink), as "catch up super fury (a damning nickname George Harrison gave him for when he lost his temper), don't get left behind" as a pot shot at him. This rocking song has been covered in concert by Jack White featuring Katy Perry, and recently finished in first place on the artist's official website forum for the song missing from the 4CD 67 track edition of Pure McCartney, which should have been included.
- This UK #4 progressive rock track written by the singer Roger Chapman and guitarist John Whitney from the Leicester group.
- The Native Canadian singer-songwriter scored a very welcome UK #7 hit taken from her album She Used to Wanna Be a Ballerina.
- This self penned UK #16 melodic pop hit by the Irish born, Swindon, Wiltshire singer/songwriter who now resides in Jersey. One of the very rare songs which features a children choir and does not make you want to be sick.
- The classic nearly 9 minutes funk soul track written and produced by the former Impressions main man taken from his debut album Curtis! Incredibly it failed to chart in the USA, but reached UK #12. Memorably, Kanye West's 2005 single "Touch the Sky", using a slowed down version of the horns.
- With their 5th single produced by David Mackay continuing to mine covers of USA only hits, this cover of the American hit by Delaney & Bonnie, became a big easy listening pop hit in Europe including UK #2, Ireland #1 & even Australia #25.
- This pop soul ballad again written and produced by Berry Gordy, Freddie Perren, Alphonzo Mizell and Deke Richards, was the family group's first to fail to reach the top five stateside. It peaked at USA #20 (R&B #3), and missed the UK top 50. It was later given a reggae makeover by UB40.
- This USA #7 soft rock ballad was written by the group's James Pankow, and featured Terry Kath on lead vocals.

Seven more entries from:
- The English progressive rock band's UK #4 organ heavy hit written by the group members Ian Eyre, Sonja Kristina, & Darryl Way.
- This UK #10 & USA #23 non-album single to raise awareness for the millions of refugees from the country formerly known as East Pakistan, following the 1970 Bhola cyclone and the outbreak of the Bangladesh Liberation War. It features contributions from Leon Russell, Jim Horn, Ringo Starr and Jim Keltner.
- The 31 year old West Virginia born musician breakthrough self penned single produced by Booker T. Jones from his debut album Just As I Am reached USA #3 (R&B #6 / AC #2) & UK #40.
- The Sticky Fingers album cut written by Jagger & Richards was a country rock effort with dark lyrics which were allegedly an attempt at parodying Gram Parsons music and lifestyle who had accompanied the two Rolling Stones to Stonehenge, and stayed at Keith Richards London pad late 1969. Parsons was 26 years old at the time of his death in 1973 and the official cause of death was an overdose of morphine and alcohol, making this song somewhat prophetic.
- The Ray Davies penned flop lead single from the soundtrack album of the film Percy with the theme of the limits of technology.
- The jazz folk track from Bryter Layter which went unnoticed at the time. Fast forward 35 years time and this off-kilter romantic recording has been used in numerous films and TV soundtracks.
- This USA #3 (R&B #2) psychedelic soul track written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for the Motown label, was first recorded by the Temptations, but this rerecording gave the psychedelic trio of Joe Harris, Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce Evans their only USA top 40 hit.

This Retro Rewind #1 track was never released as a single in Europe, yet elsewhere it peaked at #1 in USA, Canada, New Zealand, & South Africa, #3 in Mexico, & #5 in Australia. At the time John Lennon claimed this song made up of disparate parts similar to The Beatles Abbey Road side 2 medley was related to McCartney's emotions in the aftermath of the Beatles' breakup. In his interpretation, the song begins with McCartney apologizing to his uncle for getting nothing done, and being easily distracted and perhaps depressed in the lethargic "Uncle Albert" section. Then, after some sound effects reminiscent of "Yellow Submarine," Admiral Halsey appears to him calling him to action, although McCartney remains more interested in "tea and butter pie." (domesticity) McCartney stated that he put the butter in the pie so that it would not melt at all which Lennon saw as a sinister allusion in the use of Admiral Halsey as a character in the song, since Halsey was famous for fighting the Japanese in World War II and claiming that "after the war, the Japanese language will be spoken only in hell," and McCartney's ex-Beatle partner had recently married "that Japanese woman", Yoko Ono. The "hands across the water" section which follows were taken as evocative of the command "All hands on deck!", rousing McCartney to action, to compete with Lennon. The song then ends with the "gypsy" section, in which McCartney resolves to get back on the road and perform his music, now that he was on his own without his former bandmates who no longer wanted to tour..... Or maybe that was an example of how paranoid Lennon had become via his heroin addiction at the time over The Beatles divorce ....
Elsewhere, five new entries from:
- The self penned USA #11 (R&B #7) breakthrough hit (later covered by Texas) was taken from the album Al Green Gets Next to You, and was produced by Willie Mitchell.
- With some subtle changes to the Band's Robbie Robertson penned recording this commercial folk cover reached USA #3 & UK #6 for the New York born singer.
- The Manchester born Californian based singer/songwriter's USA #73 country rock track expressing his anger about why humans go to war is as relevant today as it was then. It features the female backing vocals of PP Arnold.
- No not a cover of the Marc Bolan penned original .... the 1960s Liverpool beat group's last commercial hooray was this USA #94 contemporary pop rock track.
- Holland-Dozier-Holland's soul female vocal trio reached USA #11 (R&B #1) with this funky soulful track on Hot Wax records.

- Written by Gaye and James Nyx Jr., the song depicts the ghettos and bleak economic situations of inner-city America, and the emotional effects these have on inhabitants. Released as a single thie final track on the What's Going On album reached USA #9 (R&B #1).
- The Madrid based soulful vocal/instrumental band's biggest international hit was this song referring to a son's poignant song addressed to his departed mother about his childhood memories and life in general. It topped the charts in Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, South Africa and Switzerland; #2 in Australia. Whilst it only made UK #35 & USA #57.

- The Glasgow pop band's second single was a major hit reaching UK #2 and a top ten hit across Europe.
- This UK #28 pop hit was the final UK chart entry for the Northern Irish pop singer. It's B-side was a cover of Tammy Wynette's 1968 USA crossover country hit "Stand By Your Man". But the most interesting fact about this track was its credits ... it was produced & Arranged by Fiachra Trench (aka Tony Visconti); and written by D. R. Ziggy (David Bowie).
