Had Rod Lawler qualified yesterday, he would have smashed the record for the longest gap between Crucible appearances. The current record is 13 years, jointly held by Jamie Burnett and Barry Pinches but Lawler's last appearance was all the way back in 1996.

I heard an interview with Gary Wilson on 5 Live this morning. He said that whilst he was delighted to have achieved his dream of reaching the Crucible he also felt that he'd underachieved in not getting there before. I see he's 31 so is he being fair on himself?

I see he's 31 so is he being fair on himself? I think that's a fair comment. I actually thought he was much older than that, but he has underachieved throughout his career. He doesn't get to latter stages of tournaments often. But he's still young enough to do big things as players are playing well into their mid 40's now, and some are playing better than they ever have. I think he will give Ronnie a good game. Depends how his nerves are and which Ronnie turns up.

I'd agree with that. He reached the China Open final two years ago so he probably should've reached the Crucible before now. Strange how he eventually gets there when he hasn't had such a good season and dropped out out of the top 50. He should be top 32 at least.

Missed the first 15 mins but enjoyed watching the 40 years of the Crucible show on the red button. I was slightly worried about John Virgos health though..
A couple of news announcements to come out of it. Jimmy White and Ken Doherty have been given invitational tour wildcards for the next 2 years minimum. Also, the world championship will stay at the Crucible for the next 10 years.

I really enjoyed the 40 Years Of The Crucible Special.
I wish I had recorded it to put it on DVD. Hopefully someone will put it on YouTube.
Looking forward to the start of 17 days Saturday at 10am. For me it's as wide open as ever and I fancy a lot of seeds to go out early.

No surprise with Selby cruising through. Not surprised by Maguire beating McGill either though I thought it would be a lot closer. I'll have to check the records and see when was the last time a seeded player suffered such a heavy defeat in the 1st round.
Ronnie's session seemingly summed up his season. Flashes of brilliance but unable to sustain it for decent length of time.

And one thing I forgot to mention after the draw: there are 10 non-UK players in the tournament and they are all in the same half of the draw.

Day 3 scores:
STUART BINGHAM 10-5 PETER EBDON SHAUN MURPHY 10-8 YAN BINGTAO MARK ALLEN 10-8 JIMMY ROBERTSON MARCO FU 10-9 LUCA BRECEL
Ding Junhui 7-2 Zhou Yuelong John Higgins 7-2 Martin Gould
Amazing comeback by Fu to win from 7-1 down. Before the tournament, I fancied a Trump v Fu final but thought that had gone out of the window yesterday.

Amazing comeback by Fu to win from 7-1 down. Before the tournament, I fancied a Trump v Fu final but thought that had gone out of the window yesterday. That match was the first I've seen in the tournament, and I only watched the 2nd half of the evening session last night! I've always liked Fu since first watching him in the late 90s, that must be his best Crucible win given the situation he was in?
Interesting chat post-match with Peter Ebdon. Fu said that he was playing so well in practice, the first day came completely out of the blue. Ebdon then said that you can practice so much that you leave your best form on the practice table. I immediately thought of Jimmy White. He always seems to say how well he's doing on the practice table...

Day 5 scores:
RYAN DAY 4-10 XIAO GUODONG ALI CARTER 7-10 GRAEME DOTT JUDD TRUMP 8-10 RORY McLEOD
Neil Robertson 8-1 Noppon Saengkham Barry Hawkins 7-2 Tom Ford
Three seeded players out on Day 5 and one of them a massive shock. Trump was joint favourite with the bookies coming into the tournament but let slip a 4-0 lead in losing to McLeod. Trump is always talked about as someone with great potential but Stephen Hendry had already won six world titles by the time he was Trump's age.

Trump is always talked about as someone with great potential but Stephen Hendry had already won six world titles by the time he was Trump's age. I saw bits and pieces of the morning session and all of the evening session of the Trump match. It was an interesting tactical match in the morning, but the pace seemed quite slow and some of the play reminded me of a club match. I knew during that 49 min 15th frame that they weren't going to finish in time. Is it just me but has Trump failed to live up to expectations at the Crucible in recent years? I like him but his arrogance is off putting and I think only creates extra pressure for him.
