So the tournament is almost upon us. The deadline for naming squads is today and the home nations have named their 23-man squads.
Roy Hodgson's squad has sparked much debate with the inclusion of 5 strikers (not such a bad thing if Rooney drops back to midfield) and the somewhat baffling decision to include the perma-crocked Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson over Premier League-winning star Danny Drinkwater.
Not that England have much chance anyway. Quarter-finals at best, assuimg they get out of the group. Gareth Bale could be the surprise team of the tournament. If he gets out of the group, he may have a decent draw in the knockout stages. Northern Ireland have a tough task but with only 8 teams to be eliminated in the 1st round, you can't rule out anyone making it through.

Just shows, you can smoke 20 fags a day, play 1 game all season and get recorded hiding behind some bins after a punch up and you still get a call up, nobody is ever going to agree 100% on a squad selection but it is baffling to call up 4 fullbacks, only 3 centre backs, 1 winger and 5 strikers, what formation are we planning to play
The baffled as to why they have been left out x11 would do a better job
------------Ben Foster-------------
Simpson -- Dann - Terry -- Creswell
Drinkwater - Carrick - Noble
Antonio ---------------------- Townsend ----------------Defoe----------------

Having Rashford who can also play out wide is seen as the reason we haven't picked more wingers. Having Dier is the reason we have only 3 centre-backs. Hodgson must feel that Dier is better as a centre-back than Jagielka. I've always liked Jagielka but he hardly played at the end of the season.
Barkley being in the squad is more of an issue than Wilshere and Henderson for me, surprised and disappointed by that. Apart from a purple patch at the start of the season he's never convinced me for England, and he didn't impress when he came on last week. Plus we're not short of options in the no 10 position. I don't see him playing, less than Drinkwater or Townsend if they'd been picked instead, so actually it's a waste of a place in the 23. Got to be honest though I feared that Drinkwater would miss out so his exclusion wasn't a surprise.

Looking forward to it, and expecting us to be hyped up and knocked out early as per usual... Will the Germans win it, they've lost Reus and replaced him with Sweinsteiger? On a separate note, I got Italy and Russia in the sweepstake, don't think I'm going to win the £7 in the pot

Ha I know, some players are just late bloomers, I mean Vardy came pretty much the same route through football as Antonio, even 12 month ago Leicester accepted a 4m bid to sell Vardy to Sheff Wed but Sheff Wed pulled out because he wasn't deemed good enough for the price, I'm not a Barkley fan, he is too selfish, too often he picks the ball up 90 yards from goal, gets his head down and runs around refusing to play easy passes until he gives the ball away, people get seduced when players like that score the odd screamer, not for me though, not in the middle of he park as for Dier being our backup CB, if it ever comes to the point where he is needed at the back our whole system falls apart how he isn't in the squad as a backup is beyond me, he does that holding job better than anyone in England Interesting article on who should be in the England team based on form and stats www.skysports.com/football/news/18804/10276980/england-euro-2016-squad-according-to-the-statsFraser Forster Joe Hart Ben Foster Danny Rose Kyle Walker Chris Smalling Phil Jagielka Simon Francis Eric Dier Scott Dann Dele Alli Ross Barkley Michail Antonio Danny Drinkwater James Milner Jordan Henderson Mark Noble Andros Townsend Adam Lallana Jamie Vardy Harry Kane Troy Deeney Daniel Sturridge

You did well. I fancy the Czechs to do well too, they are probably lacking a top striker though

I don't know what his international record is like or whether he's injured again, but I would have thought he'd be in. They've only picked three strikers.

I don't have an issue with us taking seven defenders - the backup defenders are the least used players in tournaments. Of course you take Wilshere; despite all his faults and injuries, he's the best midfielder we have. Taking one winger is weird, and for that reason I'd have opted for Townsend instead of Barkley.

I would not take anyone that has played 141 minutes in an entire season, as for wingers, we didn't look like a team until we brought wingers on, shame we only have 1, luckily Lallana can pass as a wide inside forward and Milner who has been deployed in the middle is better out wide, out the way so he doesn't get in anyones way

Can see the logic in maybe bringing him on to defend a lead but Wilshere in place of Milner looks an obvious switch to me for the Russia game. He just isn't the answer centrally in a game we need to win. I don't think it's a coincidence we looked better when he went off.

I Dont think Milner will play either. He is England's regular set piece taker though so there must be a reason behind Hodgson insisting Kane take all the kicks even when Milner was on the pitch and that to me is that Milner won't be on the pitch
Which brings me to Razzle Dazzles Euro 2106 stay of the day: James Milner has 14 assists from crosses and set pieces this season
Rooney (ST) ,Alli (CAM) ,Milner (RM) are not central midfielders for their clubs and Henderson and Wilshere can't last 60 minutes. Which leaves us with Dier as our only fit cm playing in a role he does at club level holding in midfield. Somehow he has named a plethora of strikers and midfielders and still haven't got the personal to make his preferred formation work. We are light in cm and on the wing unless we play an unfit player in midfield and Milner on the wing
