With football fever gripping the nation football fans, it is time to re-assess "Three Lions". With music written by the Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie, and comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner providing the lyrics, it rocketed to #1 in May 1996 as England hosted the European Championships. Two years later, in a slightly modified format, it went back to the top, as an unofficial alternative to England's 1998 World Cup song. And every subsequent World Cup has triggered a reactivation, and a reappearance in the Top 30.
But is it any good; or is it just the best football song ever, amongst a truly dire set of competitors ? Do we like to be reminded of Bobby Moore and Nobby Stiles, or, 50 years on, is this getting rather desperate ? Does the video clip of the whole of Wembley Stadium singing along give you goosepimples ? How do you feel about German football fans adopting the song ? Novelty song or pop classic ?
Please give us your opinion, along with a score between 0 (very bad) and 10 (very good). You must write a minimum of 5 words and a maximum of 5 paragraphs for your score to count, and scores outside the range of 0-10 will not be included.

Usually I'm not a fan of football songs (There are only two exclusions : "Go Denmark" and "The Bhoys Are Back In Town"), but I don't hate them too.
5/10.

I like the sound and catchiness but some terrible singing which kinda puts you off and I am Scottish so a generous 5/10 for me

Absolute classic at the time, and still brilliant, they say it's the football song that killed off all other football songs. 10/10 for me.

Best football song ever written. Parts of it you just want to keep singing, in particular the "it's coming home" part.
For the 1996 original version only: 10/10

The best football song ever made. The lyrics on the original 1996 version perfectly sum up what it is like to be a football fan (that is not Brazil, Germany, Barcelona, Real Madrid, etc).
As John Cleese's character in the film Clockwise said "It's not the failure that get me, it's the hope".
10/10
If you want an idea as to how bad football songs can truly be, listen to this anthem recorded in 1982 by England's 1966 WC winning side (minus Bobby & Jack Charlton who clearly recognised it's awfulness):

I'm not a football fan and i find these footie anthems a bit toe-curling. I don't much care for Baddiel and Skinner either, and I can take or leave the Lightning Seeds tbh. So I'm not exactly the target audience for this track!
The only football song that I can tolerate is World In Motion, I actually quite like that one!
0/10 for me (I'm generally quite a positive person, but I just can't get past the whole "thirty years of hurt" thing, I really don't care whether we win, lose or draw.....enough already!)

Take the football away from it and what do we have? A brilliant, brilliant pop song, so typical of the Lightning Seed high quality output. With singalong chorus, repeated theme and killer bridge.
Add the football bit in and you have the best song written for football ever.
10/10.

Add the football bit in and you have the best song written for football ever. 10/10. That's what makes it so good. It sounds more like a Lightning Seeds song than it does a football song. 8/10.

Clever lyrics, catchy chorus, nice tune. Some wonky singing (esp. Baddiel) added to its charm, and the commentary samples are highly effective. Without question, the best football song ever, but scored against other pop songs, it's a 7 from me.

Its revival on numerous occasions has proved its worth. Baddiel and Skinner's performances are a bit embarrassing - but in a knowing, very 90s "football new lad" or indeed "dad or uncle who can't sing" way. And the whole mythology of English football over recent decades is encapsulated in a concise and precise way. And the Lightning Seeds were one of the most consistently brilliant singles bands of the very late 80s and first half of the 90s (I think they became rather too laddish after and thanks to "Three Lions", though - - they were much better when they were more introverted and slightly awkward).
8/10

As football songs go it's one of the better ones, that being said most are complete rubbish.
The lyrics would need to be updated if it were being released again, 30 would need to be 50.
Think World In Motion is better.
6/10
