The 1966 world cup kicked off 50 years ago today, Monday 11 July 1966.
I propose to relive this by running through the games that took place each day. There are 16 participating countries, in 4 groups of 4, each team playing each other. The top 2 from each group go through to a knockout phase. The two losing semi-finalists will compete a 3rd place playoff.
The final will be on 30th July.
Group 1: England (host nation), Uruguay, France, Mexico Group 2: West Germany, Switzerland, Argentina, Spain Group 3: Brazil (holders), Bulgaria, Portugal, Hungary Group 4: Soviet Union, North Korea, Italy, Chile
Schedule: first games
11 July (19:30) [1] England vs Uruguay 12 July (19:30) [2] West Germany vs Switzerland 12 July (19:30) [3] Brazil vs Bulgaria 12 July (19:30) [4] Soviet Union vs North Korea 13 July (19:30) [1] France vs Mexico 13 July (19:30) [2] Argentina vs Spain 13 July (19:30) [3] Portugal vs Hungary 13 July (19:30) [4] Italy vs Chile

Interesting politics back in 1966.
Less than half of the nations competing in that tournament were multi-party democracies - England, France, West Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Uruguay and Chile.
Of the other 9, there were:- 4 Communist single-party states - Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Hungary and North Korea 1 Socialist single-party state - Mexico 2 single-party states which swayed towards Fascism - Spain and Portugal 2 military dictatorships - Brazil and Argentina (There had been a military coup in Argentina just 1 month before the tournament)
Both Chile and Uruguay were to suffer military coups in the 1970s.
Today, 14 (or 15) of those 16 nations are multi-party democracies. North Korea definitely isn't, and Russia isn't but pretends to be.

We may have a guess at who some of the favourites are likely to be:
Brazil obviously. Won both the last two world cups. The team that was runner-up in 1962, Czechoslovakia, have failed to qualify. Spain did badly in that world cup but did just win the European Championships.
England reached the quarter final in 1962 where they lost to Brazil, but as host nation may be hopeful to progress further. If they and Brazil both win their groups they will meet in the semi-final if they both get past their quarter-finals too.
The Soviet Union were runners up in the European Championship and look a strong contender, and with Chile coming 3rd in 1962 where they were hosts, it may be a "group of death" together with Italy who disappointed in the 1962 world cup by not getting through their group.

I wouldn't rule out England on home soil and if Jimmy Greaves can bang the goals in, they have a great chance.
Brazil look the team to beat though. Pele will take some stopping.
Portugal are making their debut but could be dangerous outsiders. I've heard good things about Eusebio.

I wouldn't rule out England on home soil and if Jimmy Greaves can bang the goals in, they have a great chance. The thing is he missed three months at the start of the 1965–66 season after being diagnosed with hepatitis, whilst his return saw him score 16 goals in the 31 games he played in (his poorest goals:games ratio since the start of his career), whilst he has shown distinct signs of fatigue in the last month of the season and seems to be "cream crackered" due to his earlier illness. If it was me I would select West Ham's Geoff Hurst as a replacement because he is more of an unknown internationally, but has been on fire this season with 40 goals from 59 games....

Was this the first time there was a world cup song, World Cup Willie. I wonder who sung that?

England 0 - 0 Uruguay
Wembley Stadium, attendance 87,148 England: (coach: Alf Ramsey) G Banks, R Wilson, B Moore, G Cohen, J Charlton, A Ball, N Stiles, B Charlton, J Greaves, J Connelly, R Hunt. Uruguay: L Mazurkiewicz, H Troche, N Goncalvez, L Ubinas, J Manicera, O Caetano, H Silva, J Cortes, P Rocha, D Perez, M Viera As the first game finishes goal-less, we wonder if this world cup will see a more defensive stance, and fewer goals than in previous contests.

with England not scoring in their first game, perhaps you are right about Greaves not being fully fit. Can they do without their top goalscorer? Maybe Hurst can come in, and we also know Bobby Charlton can bang in a few..

John Connelly didn't do much for me. Maybe Martin Peters should come into the side for the Mexico game.

West Germany 5 - 0 Switzerland Held 16' Haller 21', 77' (pen.) Beckenbauer 40', 52' West Germany: Line-up [1] Hans TILKOWSKI (GK) [2] Horst-Dieter HOETTGES [3] Karl-Heinz SCHNELLINGER [4] Franz BECKENBAUER [5] Willi SCHULZ [6] Wolfgang WEBER [7] Albert BRUELLS [8] Helmut HALLER [9] Uwe SEELER (C) [10] Sigi HELD [12] Wolfgang OVERATH Switzerland Line-up [1] Charly ELSENER (GK) [4] Heinz BAENI [6] Richard DUERR [7] Hans-Ruedi FUHRER [9] Andre GROBETY [10] Robert HOSP [13] Fritz KUENZLI [15] Karl ODERMATT [17] Jean-Claude SCHINDELHOLZ [18] Heinz SCHNEITER (C) [20] Ely TACCHELLA Referee Hugh PHILLIPS (SCO) Two goals each from Haller (one a penalty) and Beckenbauer and one from Sigi Held saw off Switzerland comfortably. The opening goal was disputed by the Swiss who claimed Held was offside when he put in a rebound after a shot came off the post. For the second goal, Haller just ran straight through the Swiss defence from 40 yards out to score. A neat one-two allowed Beckenbauer to score again before the break. In the second half Beckenbauer added a 4th when it was his turn to run through a weak Swiss defence, and although he was on a hat-trick, it was Haller who took the penalty that gave the Germans their 5th goal.

Brazil 2 - 0 Bulgaria Pele 15', Garrincha 63' Brazil: Line-up [1] GILMAR (Gilmar Dos Santos Neves) (GK) [2] DJALMA SANTOS [4] BELLINI (C) [6] ALTAIR [8] PAULO HENRIQUE [10] PELÉ (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) [13] DENILSON [14] LIMA [16] GARRINCHA [17] JAIRZINHO [18] ALCINDO Bulgaria: Line-up [1] Georgi NAIDENOV (GK) [2] Aleksandar SHALAMANOV [3] Ivan VUTSOV [4] Boris GAGANELOV (C) [5] Dimitar PENEV [6] Dobromir JECHEV [7] Dinko DERMENDZHIEV [8] Stoyan KITOV [9] Georgi ASPARUKHOV [11] Ivan KOLEV [13] Dimitar YAKIMOV A straightforward win for the holders, taking 15 minutes before Pele struck again and then a second half goal from Garrincha finished it off. Both of these goals came from free-kicks outside the box. Pele's appeared to go straight through the wall that didn't quite do its job. Bulgaria did manage one decent chance at a time they were still only 1-0 down.

The first player to catch my eye in this tournament is the West German midfielder Franz Beckenbauer. He is still only 20 years old, but has suffered for his youthful irresponsibility, by being banned from the German national youth team after fathering a child and refusing to marry its mother.
He grew up supporting the major team in his home city - 1860 Munich. But he plays for the team in their shadow, Bayern Munich, who have just won promotion to the Bundesliga.
He made his debut for West Germany nine months ago. I suspect he could become a world-class player.

We'll see the rest of the teams tonight. Notable that 5 teams so far have kept clean sheets, i.e. not conceded a goal, and this world cup may turn out to be more tactical.
I'll be able to assess Beckenbauer better when they play a better team. Switzerland's defence was close to zero. Helmut Haller though does impress me, and his link-up play with Beckenbauer worked well. This duo could be lethal.

This evening has 4 games, tomorrow there are no games. And I will be back relatively late tonight. And I may try to find video links to post before I give the report on the game. Dependent on the video itself, it might not tell you the score of the game so you may be able to watch not knowing the score.
Preferably I don't post the links until the kick-off time but that won't always be possible. Especially as on Friday I won't be able to. So I will put video links up but not the reports until after the games have "completed", around 9:15pm for a 7:30pm kick-off.

One could counter argue that it is ridiculous that there is only one representative from Africa (who understandably boycotted at this relative insult, hence the Mozambique born Eusebio is playing for Portugal), Asia & Oceania combined for a so called World Cup. Whilst Australia were beaten 9-2 over two legs in the Play-offs suggests punters are underestimating this communist nation's side of "jockeys".

Our first game that has seen both sides score, both goals came in the 2nd half, Mexico scoring first. This means that in group 1, both games so far have been drawn and it is not clear who will progress. (I'm not sure how goal average works in this case and if there is another tie-break after that like goals scored, which would put these two ahead).

They got a "bye" though when African teams withdrew from qualification as they did not feel they should have to go into a second round of playoffs after they had won their own group / zone. I guess given it's called the "world" cup, they have to try the best they can to involve teams from all the continents.
