There are plenty of people around who are upset that Drake has just joined Wet Wet Wet in second place on the list of longest consecutive weeks at #1.
Written by Reg Presley (born Reginald Ball), his band, the Troggs, had a #5 hit with Love Is All Around in 1967. Fast forward 27 years, and Wet Wet Wet's cover was featured prominently in what was soon to become the most successful British film of all time - Four Weddings And A Funeral. Movies have always been a good way to promote songs, and many of the 90s best sellers were film tie-ins. Love Is All Around eventually sold over 1.8 million copies.
But is it any good ? Does it beautifully complement the weddings in the film, with its upbeat lyrics and nice guy performance ? Or is it really a dirge, more suited musically to the funeral ? Has anyone ever felt anything in their toes, apart from a sharp stab of pain when you walk into a table leg ?
Please give us your opinion, along with a score between 0 (very bad) and 10 (very good). You must write a minimum of 5 words and a maximum of 5 paragraphs for your score to count, and scores outside the range of 0-10 will not be included.

I wouldnt call myself a Wet Wet Wet fan but I have always been a fan of his voice and they are great guys and the first album is really good and they have had their moments since. Playing this 20 odd years later it is actually pretty decent just we were all so sick of it at the time. A bit lazy but perfectly fine cover 6/10

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Marti Pellow's soulful vocals, and this is a fine cover I think. And, although I quite liked the Bryan Adams chart topper, I always got this one's popularity a lot more.
If it hadn't been deleted on it's 15th week at the top then Drake probably wouldn't have caught up with it yet!

Pointless cover that removed all that was interesting and other from the original and made it into the sort of thing that is the first dance at weddings. Gash. 1/10. And the 1 is because it kept "I Swear" off the top spot.
Is the deletion story true? I remember hearing it at the time, but it stayed in the top ten for three more weeks. I took it to be a deliberate attempt to force people to buy it for the 16th week because it was up against the monster (in every sense) that was Whigfield.

I'll go along with Thorney. I disliked their lame covers of "With A Little Help From My Friends" and "Yesterday" more, and yes I preferred some of the music they wrote themselves, like their earlier "Wishing I Was Lucky" and "Sweet Little Mystery" etc. There were better songs around at the time, but I'll give it 6/10.

It's not my favourite song by them, but it is an okay cover as covers go. However I did get a bit fed up with after 3 months at the top of the charts.

I've always liked Wet Wet Wet and thought this was a really good song in it's own right.
I wasn't aware of the original version of this and didn't hear it until well into the WWW chart run. Thought it was quite dull, give me the Wet Wet Wet version any time.
Not keen on Richard Curtis films, and Four Weddings is no exception. This song is the only decent thing about it.

One of those occasions when the cover was better than the (Troggs) original. The two ironies of this track was that originally the promo single from the Richard Curtis movie was going to be Elton John's terrible version of the The Dixie Cups' Chapel Of Love, until audience film previews suggested the Scottish band's cover should be the one to promote the Richard Curtis film; and secondly Wet Wet Wet only got the idea to cover the song from this cover version which they saw on MTV:
It is certainly much better than their anaemic cover of With A Little Help From My Friends, and their pointless cover of Yesterday... 8/10
(Goes all Earl Purple) Incidentally, my Personal Chart toppers whilst this record reigned at #1 for 15 weeks were:
Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance) Jun94 - 4 Wks Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds Jul94 - 3 Wks Jesus & Mary Chain ft Hope Sandoval - Sometimes Always Jul94 - 2 Wks Oasis - Live Forever Aug94 - 4 Wks Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me Sep94 - 2 Wks

Its a record designed to appeal to lots of people, in a rather cynically contrived manner. The quiet, reflective verses, with their slushy sentimentality. A little bit of slide guitar for those whose ears are open for something unusual. Strings during the chorus, as it piles on the emotion. And some wailing electric guitar at the end to stop the blokes from completely hating it. Funnily enough, the blandness of Marty's singing is lost within the "tick all the boxes" arrangement.
But the whole experience is massively boosted by Reg Presley's lyrics. They are quite wonderful, even if familiarity has made them rather cliched. "It's written in the wind". "On my love, you can depend". "I need someone beside me, in everything I do".
So a net score of 6/10.

I think I quite liked it at the time, then came to be sick of it, so 4/10 for me. Prefer the Christmas is all around version.

I associate this song with psycho Trevor and Little Mo in Eastenders. Hmmm, like the harmonies and ending powerful but would skip it normally. 5/10
