They've changed the dates for the Mercury Prize again with this year's shortlist being announced on Thursday (August 4).
That gives us just a few days to speculate on which albums will make it. Naturally, I hope Suede will be on the list this time as Night Thoughts sees them back at their best. David Bowie's Blackstar will surely feature and they may decide that they can't ignore Adele.

Half of the shortlist is bring chosen by public nominations so expect more mainstream releases to feature (like Adele)

I know they have zero chances but hope for Daughter and Frightened Rabbit I was hoping they'd skip the (bad) Adele album but if the general public votes she'll be there for sure, then even maybe One Direction this time

Only one act I haven't heard of well The 1975 or Radiohead for me but I wonder if they will give it to a grime act or will having two split the voting

I know a lot more of those LPs than usual, which is a bad thing in my opinion. I often treat the Mercury Prize as a way to discover new types of music. Not this year.
Michael Kiwanuka would be my pick from that list.

I was hoping to see Shura's name on there. I love Michael Kiwanuka's album - need to give a few of the others a listen

The Comet is Coming is the only one that I didn't know, typical Mercury nominated band

Here are the Metacritic aggregate scores (max 100) / Rate Your Music score (max 5.00) (# of reviews) / Betfair Bookmakers Odds
Favourite highlighted in bold:
Anohni - 'Hopelessness' 83 / 3.28 (1589) / 7-1 Bat For Lashes - 'The Bride' 78 / 3.21 (395) / 12-1 David Bowie - 'Blackstar' 87 / 3.94 (7480) / 11/10 Fav Jamie Woon - 'Making Time' 71 / 3.07 (183) / 25-1 Kano - 'Made in the Manor' 82 / 2.96 (94) / 16-1 Laura Mvula - 'The Dreaming Room' 82 / 3.23 (84) / 12-1 Michael Kiwanuka - 'Love & Hate' 86 / 3.54 (154) / 12-1 Radiohead - 'A Moon Shaped Pool' 86 / 3.84 (6860) / 8-1 Savages - 'Adore Life' 82 / 3.16 (1370) / 5-1 Skepta - 'Konnichiwa' 83 / 3.31 (796) / 8-1 The 1975 - 'I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it' 75 / 2.86 (544) / 14-1 The Comet Is Coming - 'Channel the Spirits' na (not enough newspaper/music journalist reviews to score) / 3.21 (83) / 33-1
So the music critics, music loving public & the bookmakers are united in agreement, for (according to BBC Radio 6 Music this evening) the first time in a decade since Amy Winehouse's Back To Black was in the same situation in 2007, when she eventually lost out to that atrocious Klaxons album).

Never been a year when I've heard so many of the albums before the list going out.

I think Bowie will walk this list to be honest.
Please not Radiohead though.
The only fight against Bowie will be Michael Kiwanuka.

Should rename it the London Music Prize. What a bent list.

No Skinny Lister? What a dreadful list.
Sounds like just a load of whiny tuneless sh*te that all sounds the same.
Bat For Lashes are ok.. Not sure about any of the others.
Bowie? What because he made great music in the past and then died?

What because he made great music in the past and then died? I take it you have not listened to Blackstar? Because if you had you'd quickly realise what a bold and adventurous album it is "the most extreme album of [Bowie's] entire career" with its blend of art rock, jazz, and experimental rock, as well as elements from industrial rock, folk-pop and hip hop which was deliberately an anti-Rock & Roll record, yet somehow it is incredibly accessible, and why an awful lot of critics and Bowie & music fans concur that it is his best album since 1977's Low (Hence why on both Metacritic, & on RateYourMusic it is the highest rated new studio album of 2016 by any one). ... and that's before the whole cryptic narrative of his swansong album concept was one on his impending death which no one has done before in the history of popular music. Personally I think it is the best album released by a British artist since Amy Winehouse's Back To Black. Whilst Skinny Lister's album would be ineligible seeing as it was released 20th April 2015.

Private Eye had a funny thing about Blackstar, comparing the reviews when it came out, with the same reviewers after Bowie died - all had changed their opinion from it being about ISIS or capitalism or something to "it's a farewell".

I'm rather underwhelmed by the list. For me, the glaring omission is Emma Pollock.
