With the Olympics just 5 days away, I thought I'd get the ball rolling on a thread for the Games.
Much of the build-up has been dominated by the Russian doping scandal and the IOC's somewhat weak leadership with regards to the matter. However, they remain banned from athletics, among other sports and there are signs the IOC may be taking some decisive (if late) action.
Golf and rugby sevens join the list of sports this year. Golf's inclusion is already looking like a bit of a joke, with much bigger tournaments elsewhere and a host of names pulling out, supposedly due to the zika virus. Rugby sevens on the other hand, should be an entertaining inclusion. New Olympic rules are likely to see the list of sports increase in the future, with the host city able to nominate sports for inclusion. Climbing is reportedly the favourite to join the schedule for 2020.
GB has a difficult job following the magnificent performance in London four years ago and are aiming to be come the first team to increase its medal tally in the Games after it has hosted. UK Sport has set a medal target of 48. GB won 65 in London, 29 of which were gold.
The Virtual Medal Table produced by Gracenote (formerly Infostrada Sports) has GB winning 51 medals in total (18 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze).
Their breakdown of medals per sport for GB is: Athletics 3-1-1 Boxing 1-0-1 Canoeing 0-1-0 Cycling 3-1-2 Diving 0-0-2 Equestrian 1-3-2 Golf 0-0-1 Gymnastics 1-1-2 Rowing 3-1-1 Sailing 3-0-1 Swimming 2-4-3 Taekwondo 1-1-1 Tennis 0-1-0 Triathlon 0-2-0
The cycling total (only 3 on the track) is well down on previous games and recent results would reflect that. However, the GB cyclists have a habit of peaking at the right time. That's in contrast to the swimmers who have shown huge improvement in the last couple of years but have a habit of doing nothing at the Olympics, with Rebecca Adlington the only gold medalist since 1988. Most of the others seem to be about what you would expect, with the exception of boxing, with the VMT showing no medals for GB's male boxers, which would be the first time since 1996.

Not giving this full time attention this time round, last time it was on home soil, so I supported it in most sports. And I'm not expecting UK that high on the medal table with medals, probably do well in the Cycling, Athletics, Hockey, Equestrian, Canoeing, Rowing and a few others. I probably watch some of the sports when there is nothing else to watch on TV, just use it as a filler this time round.

Can maybe sneak something in Athletics (Lynsey Sharp?) but as you say if the current position is reflected we stand to lose out badly in the cycling - Australia had an obsession with doing us down in this - and also probably the rowing.
From the press I thought we had new shining stars in both the men's and women's sprints but most of the names listed are unfamiliar.
I can't really see us getting too close to the medal haul in London overall.
Can't say I'm excited as yet but that's probably because they seem so far away.

I cant be in this thread too much in case I catch the zika virus... Worst excuse ever by the golfers, who obviously get more money and sponsorship from outside the Olympics. How exactly does the zika virus affect males anyway? Pregnant mothers were at the most risk I thought?

How exactly does the zika virus affect males anyway? Pregnant mothers were at the most risk I thought? Don't quote me on this as i'm not sure how accurate it is, but I read somewhere that I think males have to be careful 6 months after they show symptoms, think it was something like that anyway. As I said, could be completely wrong and i'm not sure how true the statement was.
Anyway, this will probably be the least interesting Olympics for me, what with the time difference and being away for pretty much the whole thing, don't know yet whether i'll be able to watch any of it. Athletics, tennis, rowing and cycling are the sports i'm mainly interested in, in that order. May be able to dip into this thread from time to time so if anyone could post GB medals in those sports (plus results of GB heats in the athletics) it would be greatly appreciated. Should be able to keep abreast of the tennis and may be able to keep track of the athletics medals but the others, including those athletics heats, will be more difficult.

Five new sports have been added to the programme for Tokyo in 2020. Baseball/softball returns after being dropped after 2008, with climbing, karate, skateboarding and surfing making their debuts.
It will bring the official number of sports to 33, though swimming, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming officially come under the umbrella term of "aquatics".

I presume the Equestrian Gold is Charlotte Dujardin?
Hard to know what to make of the Lizzie Armitage situation - are we being a bit two-faced?
I suppose you have to go by what the Appeals Committe decide but the rules are quite clear - they should have drawn a line after the Christine Ohuruogu debacle.
If it had been any other nationality we'd have been shouting to throw them out.

As for the the Lizzie Armitstead situation, as you say, CAS found in her favour - on the grounds there hadn't been sufficient effort to locate her on the first "missed" test and other protocols weren't followed correctly. The GB anti-doping system is so rigorous, it's easy to see why athletes will miss tests here and there.

That Cycling Road Race was amazing to watch. The Brazilian TV coverage was shambolic though, not a patch on the Tour De France, but I guess it gives it a retro feel to make it more thrilling, as you frequently did not know what was going on.
And a GB World record in the Swimming Pool.

I agree the Cycling road race was so gripping to watch, especially losing 2 from the front 3 at the last descent, than the lead was caught in the dying seconds, so many twists and turns. Team GB did well to keep up, shame Thomas missed out just lost it at the last descent, the cameraman didn't even get a shot of it
