Manfred Mann get closer to a #1 whilst the other challengers are from the new entries by the Merseys, who are a reduced Merseybeats, and Percy Sledge.
Sorrow is actually originally a McCoys song, but it is also the same song David Bowie recorded later.

Manfred Mann do get to #1 but are immediately under pressure by James Brown, who had a #1 late in 1965. That leaves the Troggs only getting the 2nd highest entry and maybe they'll suffer their own syndrome on this chart too.

14 May 1966:
1 ( 3 ) It's A Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown < 2nd #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Pretty Flamingo - Manfred Mann (#1[1]) 3 ( 8 ) Wild Thing - Troggs 4 ( 4 ) Sorrow - Merseys 5 ( 5 ) When A Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge 6 ( 2 ) You Don't Have To Say You Love Me - Dusty Springfield (#1[4]) 7 ( -- ) I Am A Rock - Simon & Garfunkel 8 ( 6 ) Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - Bob Dylan (#6) 9 ( -- ) Stop Her On Sight (SOS) - Edwin Starr 10 ( -- ) Hey Girl - Small Faces

-- ( -- ) I Love Her - Paul And Barry Ryan -- ( -- ) Promises - Ken Dodd
James Brown does get his second #1. Simon & Garfunkel have twice peaked at #2, and get the highest new entry hoping to go one better whilst the Troggs also have their eye on the top 2.
Edwin Starr's soulful entry and another Small Faces hit take a higher position than Frank Sinatra's crooner ballad that made it to #1 a few months after Nancy who herself did top the chart here.

-- ( -- ) Cool Jerk - Capitols -- ( -- ) While I Live - Kenny Damon -- ( -- ) Band Of Gold - Mel Carter
The Rolling Stones classic gets the highest new entry, with James Brown keeping out the Troggs this week and Simon & Garfunkel who have had two #2s might not even manage that this time, climbing to #3 but obviously with the Rolling Stones in hot pursuit, as well as Edwin Starr and the Small Faces making climbs.
Dexy's Midnight Runners were obviously fans of the artist at #32 this week.
Junior Walker charts with I'm A Road Runner. This sounds nothing like the Jonathan Richman hit from 1977 but does sound to me similar to Steve Winwood's hit "Roll With It". (This similarly also didn't go unnoticed to the song's publishers, and subsequently Holland-Dozier-Holland got a writing credit on "Roll With It")
Tom Jones enters at #35 with one half of a double A-side, this the more uptempo song whilst Once There Was A Time is a croony ballad (and not to be confused with his hit Once Upon A Time, which sounds more like the one that is in the chart here).

This is a week I knew was coming where the Beatles, Kinks, Ike & Tina Turner and Gene Pitney all enter on the same week. For my chart the Gene Pitney song charts but lower down. In the UK chart the Beatles would get to #1 first and the Kinks afterwards, both staying on top for 2 weeks. Ike & Tina Turner were #3 behind those two, then behind the Kinks and Gene Pitney for a week.
Ike Turner doesn't actually perform on River Deep, Mountain High, and whilst they have charted before they would not have been considered a "major" artist but for the team behind this which is Phil Spector producing and Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich composing (with Spector also added as a co-songwriter which was usually the case with Barry/Greenwich songs). For contractual reasons Ike Turner's name was included in the credits, plus Phil Spector paid him $20K for the contract. As the single surprisingly flopped in the USA, he probably thought he might not make that money back, but the single was at least a hit in the UK and other parts of the world.
Sunny Afternoon is a wonderful song by the Kinks, primarily focused on the amount of tax he is having to pay. Paperback Writer is also a Beatles classic, with Paul McCartney as the main songwriter on this one.

-- ( -- ) To Make A Big Man Cry - PJ Proby -- ( -- ) He - Righteous Brothers
Inevitably "River Deep Mountain High" gets to #1. I have always liked that song and whilst Sunny Afternoon is also a classic, this is one occasion I knew about where two great songs would be competing in hot competition.
Perhaps a bit of a surprise in the highest new entry this week. Although Joe Tex is a one-hit wonder from 1977 in the UK, he had many hits in the 60s in the USA and has been on my playlist before without setting the chart alight. (I'll have to look up if he has even charted before). Surprising then as this was not one of his biggest US hits, in fact it scrapes in as a #39 hit (and I only extended the US to a top 40 around early 1965). However I was very familiar with this song thanks to Paul Young - you know the one who had many hits in the early 1980s, and he also recorded this song, although he didn't have a hit with it, when he was in a band called Q-Tips. They played it a fair amount on Radio 1.
Roy Orbison enters at #16 and a very sad note about him as Claudette died during this month, I think on 7th June 1966 but I'll have to look up the exact date. They were riding motorcycles and a truck pulled out of a side road in front of her. She left him with 3 children but 2 of those died in a house fire 2 years later. Roy remarried and had 2 more children and died in 1988, aged 52. Claudette was only 24 when she died.
The song at #32 is better known for Jimi Hendrix's version, which means you probably think I can't chart that now, but as his version sounds so different to this one, I will consider it, and it may do well.
The Jimmie Rodgers song entering at #40 is not the same as Roy Orbison's big smash hit of 1964.

After the Rolling Stones lost their crown last week, a song they wrote gets the highest entry position for Chris Farlowe. The Hollies hit was written by Graham Gouldman. Georgie Fame would replace the Kinks at #1 but spend only one week inside the top 3 with this song.

At the midway point in the year I run through the sporting winners. Liverpool won the football league, for the second time in 3 seasons, and it was a Merseyside double as Everton came back from 0-2 behind to win the FA Cup, beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-2. West Brom won the league cup against West Ham, the latter with Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst in their team. West Ham won the home leg 2-1 but lost 4-1 away in the second leg, thus an aggregate score of 5-3. In Scotland, the title went to Celtic but Rangers beat them in the Scottish Cup Final 1-0 in a replay after a 0-0 draw. Celtic beat Rangers in the final of the Scottish League Cup, also 1-0. Real Madrid won the European Cup, beating Partizan Belgrade 2-1. Borussia Dortmund won the cup-winners cup, beating Liverpool in the final 2-1 after extra time. Barcelona won the Fairs Cup against Real Zaragoza, 4-3 on aggregate. For information on the 1966 World Cup, I did a whole topic on this so please refer to that. In other sports: tennis: Manuel Santana beat Dennis Ralston in the Men's singles final at Wimbledon. Billie Jean King won the women's singles, beating Maria Bueno. baseball: The Baltimore Orioles had a straight 4-0 victory in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. American football: Green Bay Packers won the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs won the AFL. In January 1967, they will play each other in what will be the first ever SuperBowl.

All those great songs squash up in the top 10.. The highest new entry is from Spanish act Los Bravos, and when the song came back in 1977 it peaked again at #2 in the UK with Spanish duo Baccara keeping it out of #1 on one of its weeks. (Subsequently a certain Spanish father and son have both reached #1).

I created one ready to post but forgot to post it.
Interestingly my current playlist has one Four Tops song and 2 other songs they also had hits with. In addition it has a Frank Sinatra song plus another one he had a hit with.

A great week for people called Bobby Moore:
30 July 1966:

And no, I really couldn't believe it when that turned up on my playlist for the week of 30 July 1966 of all dates...
Anyway, Lovin' Spoonful get to be #1 on that historic week but Ike & Tina Turner do get another entry, and I think Ike even performs on this one.
Will England ever win the World Cup again? God only knows... I guess we can dream the impossible dream. (Lovin' Spoonful are #1 but not with Daydream...)

There were a couple of cover versions of it entering the UK chart a short while ago but I waited for the Rolling Stones' own version which got in via one of the charts, I think the US top 40. I might have done the same with "Just Like A Woman" as Bob Dylan's own version will hit the US top 40 in a few weeks after this too.

The Beatles fly straight in at #1 with another great song, written by Paul McCartney and with orchestral strings, a song about lonely people, two characters, Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie. Note that "Yellow Submarine" will be charted separately, when it hits the US chart, which is 2 weeks away.
This means that the Beach Boys are denied again, and that the Small Faces who also reached UK #1 with their entry probably won't make it here with that song. They do have some good ones coming up though. Donovan's current single was also his biggest worldwide hit but I'm expecting him to have a bigger one with a different song on my chart. Not sure if it will get him to #1, but maybe the main man behind the song at #1 will help him out a bit on it...
Lee Dorsey's single is correctly titled in this chart although he always sings "Working in a coal mine".
The next entry is also a Lennon-McCartney song, and the Guantanamera is more famous as a football chant that inspired the title of a Robbie Williams album.

Another good week for music. The Beatles remain at #1 with the Beach Boys at #2 as they also get another new entry further down and the Small Faces make some ground to climb to #3.
The highest new entry is a classic song from the Supremes. Can they dislodge the Beatles though?
Roy Orbison was already recording an album of Don Gibson covers before Claudette died, but this song is always associated with her. I wouldn't normally like this kind of thing that much but I think the way he sings it, together with the events of Claudette just touch a nerve enough, and the British public agreed to some extent making this a #3, but then they liked country ballads and Jim Reeves' song, which Roy Orbison also had recorded got to #1 in the UK. Given Jim Reeves died in 1964 this song must have been recorded at least 2 years earlier but it is strange how a song can suddenly become relevant, and the Vietnam War kind of makes this Jim Reeves' most relevant song to date. His biggest NM hit so far "Welcome To My World" peaked at #8 in 1963 after entering at #15. This one enters at #19 so might not get as high as that one. Most of his singles have flopped though.
Between those we get the Edwin Starr song that I mentioned in the "non christmas songs that have Christmas in the lyrics" topic.
