-- ( -- ) I Don't Care - Los Bravos -- ( -- ) Walk With Me - Seekers
4 weeks on top now for the Beatles, who are also now #3. The biggest challenge comes from 2 high new entries.
Whilst this is the first hit for the New Vaudeville Band, the man behind it is Geoff Stephens who has co-written a previous #1 ("Tell Me When" by the Applejacks) and it isn't a real band (yet), just a number of session musicians he has put together. The lead singer on this is actually John Carter (The Ivy League), who happened to be around in the recording studio at the time, and he did a demo which then got used. But it sounds like he has his finger over his nose while he is singing it.
Below this, another great song on the Motown label. Jimmy Ruffin is the brother of David Ruffin, singer with the Temptations. It hasn't been written by one of the main songwriting teams but by Weatherspoon, Riser and Dean.
Lower down we also have a debut for a talented singer-songwriter called Neil Diamond. I wonder if we'll hear a bit more from him.. Not so good thought for Spanish group Los Bravos, following their big #3 hit Black Is Black with a song that doesn't make the chart.

-- ( 26 ) Lady Jane - Rolling Stones (#4) -- ( 28 ) Big Time Operator - Zoot Money's Big Roll Band (#15) -- ( 32 ) Say I Am (What I Am) - Tommy James & The Shondells (#23) -- ( 35 ) Guantanamera - Sandpipers (#16) -- ( 36 ) Got To Get You Into My Life - Cliff Bennett And The Rebel Rousers (#13) -- ( 37 ) My Heart's A Symphony - Gary Lewis & The Playboys (#25) -- ( 39 ) Just Like A Woman - Manfred Mann (#6)
-- ( -- ) Changes - Crispian St Peters
As the New Vaudeville Band make it to #1 with Jimmy Ruffin also climbing, we get a high entry for British group Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich beating another Motown classic, which means now we have 3 times had a British act do that, with the Beatles beating the Supremes to #1.
This time losing out are the Four Tops with their biggest UK hit, a #1 for them.
Behind both of those, an organ-based band. (It's 1966. Who are the Doors?)... The song does feel new for its time, which is a lot more than you can say for the #1, based on 1920s jazz, albeit that it is an original song.

Another great top 10, with the British groups and the Motown classics., and hey hey, the debut for the Monkees... an American pop group who also have a TV show to promote their music.
With the Four Tops in the chart at #4, we also have another song they recorded entering at #14.

Quieter this week on the new entries side allowing all those great singles that entered in the last few weeks to spend a bit more time near the top. It was actually fairly close this week, and there may be a change at the top next week.

8 October 1966:
1 ( 2 ) Bend It! - Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Winchester Cathedral - New Vaudeville Band (#1[3]) 3 ( 4 ) Last Train To Clarksville - Monkees 4 ( 3 ) What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted - Jimmy Ruffin (#2[1]) 5 ( 5 ) Reach Out I'll Be there - Four Tops (#4) 6 ( 7 ) Walk Away Renee - Left Banke 7 ( -- ) No Milk Today - Herman's Hermits 8 ( 8 ) Lady Godiva - Peter And Gordon 9 ( 6 ) 96 Tears - ? -- ( -- ) Poor Side Of Town - Johnny Rivers
The British groups continue to reign and "Bend It" takes over at #1. For me, and I'm not sure others will agree, this is a moment of their best known song not reaching #1 as I always feel this one and Zabadak and even Hold Tight are better known than Legend Of Xanadu.
The same for Herman's Hermits who get the highest new entry. Surely this is their most famous song, not "I'm Into Something Good". Can it get them an NM #1, something they haven't had yet? If so it would be a first for Graham Gouldman as a songwriter, who will would create an interesting pattern with a #1 in January 1977 and another in August 1987... However there will no doubt be more in-between...
Bobby Darin has had a big gap since his last hit, I don't think he's been in the chart since "Things" in 1962, which was a major hit that should have been #1. As we have the Four Tops remaining at #5 and a song they recorded at #6 we have another one they recorded entering at #11.
Among the other entries, an interesting cover version by Geno Washington of the Doris Day classic.

No change at #1, but Herman's Hermits looking well placed to take over next week, whilst Bobby Darin also climbs into the top 10. There are no entries inside the top 10 this week, the Hollies getting the highest entry at #13.
Lou Rawls is another artist I didn't know had been around this early, I knew his 1976 hit "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". Maybe that one will also chart...

So finally, an NM #1 for Herman's Hermits... And I noticed that even in the other retro-chart it got to #4, for someone who claims not to like them..
Tell me why, James and Bobby Purify.. a line from Deacon Blue's "Fergus Sings The Blues". I was familiar with "I'm Your Puppet" when it came back in 1976, actually as a re-recording.
A bit lower down we have the debut for Cat Stevens who borrowed from a musician he admired at the time whose name was Yusuf, and he has a co-write credit on this song. Later on he would adapt that name for himself. Probably influenced.

Earl, when you started to do personal charts in real time, not these good retrospectives ?

My first weekly chart done at the time happened in January 1977, actually 30 December 1976 but it was dated 1 January 1977 because UK charts were dated on Saturdays.
I don't expect to reach that point until 2019. I often wonder when I will stop doing weekly charts as I spend far too much time rating music and in the modern era having to find it.
The older era is easier - give me 8-10 songs a week on a plate of which I can discard one or two right away, pick 1-3 absolute favourites off it almost immediately and the rest fall somewhere in between.
Now I have computer programs to find the music, do a lot of filtering, eventually got it down to around 300 and then listen to bits of all those songs, getting it down to about 36 this week of which half will get into my chart. Not even easy to pick a great song off this week, and as I have a Christmas song at #1 right now I am looking for its successor.
From the 1966 lists I have between 3-5 weeks of songs dependent on how many different new ones there are, and off those lists I will immediately pinpoint the top 10-15 songs off them, discard a few, then rate the rest.
Of course it's a mix of songs I know and some I don't, and I'm sure the ones I know have a strong advantage. Annette Funicello did really well to win me over in the 1960 charts as I didn't know any of her songs before, not even Pineapple Princess. Had I started it earlier and the way I do now there's a chance First Name Initial may have been my Christmas #1 of 1959. As it was it entered on the 3rd week of 1960, the week it reached #20 in the US chart, and ended up peaking at #2.

14 new songs this week, including several classics. In fact it's times like this that are hard when you see two songs you'd have expected to reach #1 on the same week.
For the Beach Boys, they've had one previous #1 with "Help Me Rhonda", and loads of other top 5 hits, but really this is their swan-song moment.
The Easybeats are really known in the UK only for "Friday On My Mind". In Australia they had loads of other hits. A couple of members later charted in the UK in the 1980s as Flash And The Pan.
I might even say 3, as Manfred Mann's hit is clearly also one of their greatest. At least now they have had a #1 with "Pretty Flamingo".
Otis Redding's "Fa Fa Fa" gets "sampled" more famously in Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music" (which we haven't had yet) on which Otis Redding worked with him directly.
Lovin' Spoonful had a #1 with their previous hit, although in the UK it's pretty much "Daydream" and "Summer In The City" and that's about it.
Lee Dorsey has been around a few years but his big hit was his last one. This one is pretty much "reggae" which is almost an introduction to that style. For me the phrase "Holy Cow" was more famously used in my favourite song of all time...

-- ( -- ) The White Cliffs Of Dover - Righteous Brothers -- ( -- ) Just One Smile - Gene Pitney
No change at the top. The country ballad by Tom Jones that won over the nation so much does get to enter the chart and is even the highest new entry this week on what was a relatively quiet week for new songs.
Unlike Geno Washington's cover of Doris Day, the Righteous Brothers cover of Vera Lynn's classic doesn't make it into the chart. That song did get to #1 in my chart for the Jive Aces in 2005. The song was also a UK #1 for Robson & Jerome, as part of a double A-side where the other side was also a hit for the Righteous Brothers.

We are in December 1966, approaching the Christmas period, and there are no Beatles songs this time. Nor are any on the list so someone else will get the Christmas #1 this year.
In the UK that went to Tom Jones but here he has fallen this week after falling 6 places short. #7 isn't bad for a song that isn't really one of my favourites of his, given the large number of great songs we have had out so much that the Easybeats could only peak at #2 and Spencer Davis Group at #3.
Shortly this chart will be providing the retro chart that is being run by Last Dreamer, although for that there will be one chart posted a week and so this will overtake as I will continue to post around 4 charts a week.
We haven't had a really big hit for Frank Sinatra yet in this chart, although had I done 50s charts or even earlier he may have done. However one of his swinging classics has entered now and maybe he can get Christmas #1, or if not that, a #1 to match the one his daughter Nancy had earlier in the year. He had better beware though - she has a song due to enter next week.

Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" remains on top whilst his previous hit "Sunshine Superman" is in the UK chart. Although he's Scottish and made it first in the UK he seems to be bigger now in the USA where Sunshine Superman reached #1 and this song #2, kept out by "Winchester Cathedral" which was a #1 on this chart a couple of months ago.
Frank Sinatra heads closer to the top, with his daughter Nancy entering lower down. Earlier in the year she was singing about boots. Now she seems to be singing about shoes... "shoe shoe shoe shoe shoe.... sugar town.."...
A few that enter above her: a soul classic by Wilson Pickett that used to be very popular at karaoke, a song by Wayne Fontana who namechecks Little Red Riding Hood and Pooh Bear and Laurel & Hardy and others, so maybe aimed at being a Christmas song or maybe not, and new songs by DDBM&T and ? & The Mysterians.

Indeed, it's very strange don't have new Beatles song is the end of year. Very possible that Tom Jones didn't have any chances for Christmas # 1 against them.
You didn't include three consecutive # 1s from my chart and my Christmas # 1 even wasn't mentioned here.
