He's the king of swing. In December 1966 he has just turned 51. But he gets a #1, his first NM #1 - however my charts only go back to the start of 1960. Had I done charts for the 40s and 50s I am sure he would have had quite a few more... His daughter struggles up from 29 to 24 though. I thought that might have been one of Last Dreamer's number ones.
His status is threatened by a bunch of kids who call themselves the Monkees with a song written by Neil Diamond (who has already reached this chart). An epic rock track by Cream, featuring former yardbird Eric Clapton on guitar as well as Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker get a high entry with the wonderful "I Feel Free", a song I keep hearing right now on a commercial...
Those two have a strong chance of being high in my chart when we kick off 1967.

It's interesting to see the songs which I have been listening to recently in preparation for the new 1967 Retro chart.

This is the final chart of 1966. The chart of the year will continue in this topic, whilst the charts of 1967 will get their own topic.
I will continue at the same rate of about 4 charts a week, which means this will "overtake" the weekly 1967 topic and you'll all be able to see what I'm going to put in my charts as they come up. But then I started doing this back in February 2015 and there was no plan at the time for this to simply be used to integrate into a combi-chart.
31 December 1966:
1 ( 2 ) I'm A Believer - Monkees < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) That's Life - Frank Sinatra (#1[2]) 3 ( 3 ) I Feel Free - Cream 4 ( 5 ) Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett 5 ( 10 ) Happy Jack - Who 6 ( 4 ) Dead End Street - Kinks (#3) 7 ( 9 ) Snoopy vs The Red Baron - Royal Guardsmen 8 ( -- ) Georgy Girl - Seekers 9 ( 13 ) In The Country - Cliff Richard And The Shadows 10 ( 7 ) Pamela Pamela - Wayne Fontana (#7)
11 ( 20 ) Standing In The Shadows Of Love - Four Tops 12 ( -- ) Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix 13 ( 11 ) Save Me - Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich (#11) 14 ( 6 ) Mellow Yellow - Donovan (#1[2]) 15 ( -- ) Try A Little Tenderness - Otis Redding 16 ( 8 ) A Hazy Shade Of Winter - Simon & Garfunkel (#3) 17 ( -- ) Nashville Cats - Lovin' Spoonful 18 ( 15 ) I Need Somebody - ? & The Mysterians (#15) 19 ( 26 ) I've Passed This Way Before - Jimmy Ruffin 20 ( 12 ) Mame - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (#8)
21 ( 14 ) There Won't Be Many Coming Home - Roy Orbison (#13) 22 ( 24 ) Any Way That You Want Me - Troggs 23 ( 16 ) Under New Management - Barron Knights (#15) 24 ( -- ) (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone - Monkees 25 ( 25 ) Tell It Like It Is - Aaron Neville 26 ( 21 ) Sugar Town - Nancy Sinatra (#21) 27 ( 27 ) Words Of Love - Mamas & The Papas 28 ( 32 ) Tell It To The Rain - Four Seasons 29 ( 23 ) Missy Missy - Paul and Barry Ryan (#23) 30 ( 17 ) A Place In The Sun - Stevie Wonder (#9)
31 ( 28 ) It's Only Love - Tommy James & The Shondells (#28) 32 ( 18 ) Morningtown Ride - Seekers (#7) 33 ( 22 ) East West - Herman's Hermits (#18) 34 ( 19 ) Knock On Wood - Eddie Floyd (#4) 35 ( 40 ) Island In The Sun - Righteous Brothers 36 ( -- ) Colour My World - Petula Clark 37 ( 33 ) Time After Time - Chris Montez (#31) 38 ( 30 ) Whispers (Getting' Louder) - Jackie Wilson (#17) 39 ( 34 ) Run Run Look And See - Brian Hyland (#27) 40 ( 29 ) Good Vibrations - Beach Boys (#1[4])
-- ( 31 ) My Mind's Eye - Small Faces (#10) -- ( 35 ) The Dreams I Dream - Shadows (#20) -- ( 36 ) Friday On My Mind - Easybeats (#2[3]) -- ( 37 ) Gimme Some Loving - Spencer Davis Group (#3) -- ( 38 ) Living For You - Sonny And Cher (#24) -- ( 39 ) Spinout - Elvis Presley (#11)
The Monkees grab the #1 spot away from Frank Sinatra but "That's Life" is considered the Christmas #1.
The highest new entry comes from the Seekers, again one hit ahead of Morningtown Ride which peaked at #2 in the UK early in 1967. This, as well as most of the Seekers hits, was written by Dusty Springfield's brother, who went to manage and write for this group when his sister went solo having previously been together with her in the Springfields.
A rare occurrence in my chart of allowing another version of Hey Joe in my chart having been a minor hit for Leaves 6 months ago.
A new version of "Try A Little Tenderness" although this song has never reached this chart, but it's an old song given a new treatment by Otis Redding. Frank Sinatra has recorded this song too.
Lovin' Spoonful chart with their tribute to the guitar plucking style of Nashville, with a lot of numbers in it. And not content with having the #1, the Monkees get another song into the chart too.
Petula Clark ends the entries with a song that was a hit in the USA and in their chart they spent Color without the 'u'. In the UK, she will soon release a different song that will be a massive hit for her.

90 See You In September - Happenings **89 Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett 88 Don't Bring Me Down - Animals *87 A Must To Avoid - Herman's Hermits 86 Walk Away Renee - Left Banke 85 Daydream - Lovin' Spoonful 84 I'm A Boy - Who 83 Hey Girl - Small Faces 82 If I Were A Carpenter - Bobby Darin 81 When A Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge 80 96 Tears - ? (Question Mark) & The Mysterians 79 Too Soon To Know - Roy Orbison
* Moves up to #67 with one week at #10 in 1965.
Adding in the first 4 weeks of 1967, "Mustang Sally" fell from 4 to 6-11-19-34 and that would move it up to #44.
(As "I Feel Free" by Cream has gone 2-2-4-9 in 1967 we can wait until it leaves the chart but it will no doubt appear in the chart of 1967 too and we can then resolve both years for it).

66 With A Girl Like You - Troggs 65 Sorrow - Merseys 64 Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song) - Otis Redding 63 Twinkle Toes - Roy Orbison 62 Stop Her On Sight (SOS) - Edwin Starr 61 19th Nervous Breakdown - Rolling Stones 60 Get Ready - Temptations 59 Wouldn't It Be Nice - Beach Boys 58 Lady Jane - Rolling Stones 57 Lightnin' Strikes - Lou Christie 56 Paperback Writer - Beatles
This countdown is somewhat "ahead" of the one I'm doing for 2016. I wonder how it would be to compare them side by side.
Two Rolling Stones hits in there and one of the Beatles' UK #1s which didn't do quite so well on this chart. They don't always get to #1 here...

55 S.Y.S.L.J.F.M (The Letter Song) - Joe Tex 54 I'm Your Puppet - James & Bobby Purify 53 Thunderball - Tom Jones 52 Knock On Wood - Eddie Floyd *51 We Can Work It Out - Beatles 50 Pied Piper - Crispian St Peters 49 Monday Monday - Mamas & The Papas 48 Semi-Detached Suburban Mr James - Manfred Mann 47 Yellow Submarine - Beatles 46 Sweet Talkin' Guy - Chiffons
We Can Work It Out was in the first chart of 1966. It peaked at #3, while "Day Tripper" occupied #1 and Herb Alpert was sandwiched in between with "Spanish Flea". It spent just 2 weeks in the chart in 1965, at 6 and 4. Adding its points in would make it 30th of 1966 (27th in 1965, where it actually finished at #183).

**36 A Hazy Shade Of Winter - Simon & Garfunkel 35 Wild Thing - Troggs 34 I Am A Rock - Simon & Garfunkel 33 All Or Nothing - Small Faces 32 Black Is Black - Los Bravos *31 Spanish Flea - Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass 30 Reach Out I'll Be There - Four Tops 29 Homeward Bound - Simon & Garfunkel
Three songs by Simon & Garfunkel.
** A Hazy Shade Of Winter had 2 weeks in the chart in 1967 which would move it up to #30, just below Homeward Bound
* 3 more weeks in 1965, 6-4-2 and #2 at the start of 1966. This was a big-hitting single that didn't reach #1 and would be #7 in 1966, #6 in 1965 (just above Ticket To Ride by a tiny margin).

** 4 more weeks in 1967 pushes it up to 12th.
Petula Clark is the lowest placed #1 that had its whole chart run in 1966. It was the first new #1 of the year.

15 Friday On My Mind - Easybeats 14 Sunny Afternoon - Kinks **13 Mellow Yellow - Donovan *12 Day Tripper - Beatles 11 It's A Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown
* Day Tripper has been the Beatles' biggest NM hit so far, and may end up being the biggest one they ever achieve. 6 weeks at #1 over the year, it would be #2 in 1966, #3 in 1965, the latter having provided the biggest two hits of the decade so far, but #3 in 1965 moves it above the Rolling Stones' biggest hit (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.
** 2 more weeks at #24 and #34 moves it up just one place (but of course it doesn't catch Day Tripper when that one has its 1965 weeks added in).
At #14, Sunny Afternoon is the highest placed single that didn't get to #1. Yeah, really it didn't...

"These Boots" is in my top 5 singles of 1966 together with "Witches Brew". From your top 120 only 2 other songs were represented in my weekly charts ("My Love" and "Morningtown Ride").

Those were the days. Nancy Sinatra wore proper boots, but then we did have Tiffany Houghton were similar ones in her videos this year...
None of this just-over-the-ankle nonsense.

6 Winchester Cathedral - New Vaudeville Band
5 Dedicated Follower Of Fashion - Kinks
4 You Don't Have To Say You Love Me - Dusty Springfield
Surprisingly the first Kinks #1, and the only one so far. For Dusty Springfield, her second #1, with her first being "I Only Want To Be With You".
The first #1 and first hit for the New Vaudeville Band but the 2nd #1 as a songwriter for Geoff Stephens, whose project that was.

The last 3 are being counted down one at a time. And they are all masterpieces.
3. Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Second #1 for the Beach Boys, it stayed on top for 4 weeks. Quite unusual for them, and especially about 2 minutes into the song when it suddenly slows down.
