HAVEN COMBI RETRO CHART FOR W/B 2nd DECEMBER 1984

Nik Kershaw gets another week at number one with ‘The Riddle’, holding off all competition for a third week.




Madonna’s fourth top ten hit of the year becomes her highest charting single as ‘Like A Virgin’ moves up to number two.


Human League are up a place at number three despite a slight dip in their points total this week.


The biggest surprise of the week is Frankie Goes To Hollywood as ‘The Power Of Love’ only shifts up to number four. It took ‘Relax’ nine weeks to make it to the top spot in January, but with ‘The Power Of Love’ only featuring on six charts, will this end their run of number one songs?


This week’s highest new entry is from Paul Young with ‘Everything Must Change’, in at number 15.


Biggest climber this week is from Alison Moyet, up 18 places with ‘Invisible’ to earn her third Top Ten of the year. There’s also a big climb for Paul McCartney (along with The Frog Chorus) as ‘We All Stand Together’ hops 17 places to number 10.


With two of the biggest Christmas songs ever being released this week, it'll be interesting to see what impact they'll have on next week’s chart as we start shaping up for the Christmas chart.

I wasn't certain whether Band Aid and Wham! are actually the two biggest selling Christmas songs ever - Band Aid certainly, but not sure about Last Christmas.  Such a shame it never got to number one.  I remember having to choose which one to buy out of my pocket money this week - I opted for Band Aid.

Getting into the Christmas spirit earlier than usual this year...

I think Boney M's Mary's Boy Child might be the second biggest selling Christmas hit, or at least it was but over the last few years Wham! may well have caught up.

In my chart in 1984 I credited Last Christmas alone for the first few weeks then switched to Everything She Wants, so I will be doing the same on here. So just after Christmas "Last Christmas" will disappear from my chart and "Everything She Wants" will appear in its place.

I have done that in recent years too, Tich being the most recent ("When We Were Beautiful" taking over from "Love On Christmas Eve", and Dropkick Murphys did the same the previous year. Both of those were the Christmas #1 of their year, and both fell to #2 the week they were "flipped".

We'll see however on this chart if "Everything She Wants" can get a real life of its own post-Christmas.

Back in 1983/84 long time Wings bandmate Denny Laine fell out with Paul McCartney due to his wife Jo Jo Laine doing a lurid kiss and tell in the Sunday People about the McCartney's (by all accounts Linda & JoJo did not like each other). Eventually, in 1988 the now estranged from the McCartney camp) Denny Laine felt the need to put his side of the story. One of the most curious things that came out of it was his claim that Paul McCartney co-composed the title track of John Lennon's estranged son (who last saw his Dad in 1971) under the pseudonym Carlton Morales as a gift whilst Julian & Cynthia Lennon visited the McCartney's in 1977 in the Virgin Islands on McCartney's yacht for a holiday where Wings were recording the London Town album. Although in the early 1990s Denny Laine retracted that statement, after both Julian & Paul McCartney denied it. However, the video was shot at Paul McCartney's London recording studio. Whether it turns out to be another of those  "let the cat out of the bag, then put it back in, only to find out it was actually true" similar to David Bowie paying for Marc Bolan's son Rolan education (which only after Bowie's death this year was it confirmed to be true) .... who knows. But the USA top ten hit certainly has some very McCartney influences.

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. Band Aid crash into the UK chart at #1 with a concept song created by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure where they include loads of pop singers hoping to raise money for charity to save the starving people of Ethiopia for famine. It started when Bob Geldof watched a documentary.

Wham! enter the UK chart at #2, pushing Frankie down to #3 already.

Gary Glitter even finds time for a new Christmas song which is quite good. Of course back in 1984 we don't know the real truth about him.

And then it all goes really retro. Nellie The Elephant dates back to 1956 and Sea Of Love to 1959. The former was popular on Junior Choice and was on an album we had of songs that were meant to appeal to children. They put a slightly different take on it by singing the chorus at twice the speed of the verses with a lead in... I can never think of it done normally now.

One song older than either of those though is "It Ain't Necessarily So" dating back to the 1930s when the Gershwin brothers wrote it for Porgy And Bess.

Are we going to do separate charts for 22nd and 29th December here?
