raliverpool's Track of The Day 2017

01/01/2017 Bon Jovi - New Year's Day
I'm not normally a fan of Jon Bon Jovi's band, but to be truthful if you took away his vocals and listened to the instrumental, you'd be thinking this sounds a hell of a lot like The Killers. Plus lyrically it starts the year off appropriately.

London Grammar - Rooting For You
The Notingham trio are back with their first new material in nearly three years, with the first great new song of 2017. It is more of the same from their debut album but with added Enya & Sigur Ros influences giving it a less contemporary, but more classic sound. Hannah Reid has clearly been listening to Elizabeth Fraser in their time away. Stunning.

I like the Bon Jovi track, and the album is probably their best since 'Have a nice day'.
Haven't heard the London Grammar one yet, but I do love a couple of theirs so might have to check it out.

03/01/2017 The xx - Say Something Loving
The second track from the forthcoming album ‘I See You,’ available January 13th 2017, suggests the band are heading for a big selling album, as this sounds even more commercial than "On Hold" which I thought was the most commercial thing they have done to date.

I'm so glad BSP are back to pretty much their best. I saw them live in 2014 and out of the 300 or so live sets ive seen that was probably the worst. They came on 30 minutes late, decorated the stage in foliage, it looked like a jungle, the vocals were muffled so you couldn't hear a word they were saying and they played b-sides and their new material at the time which was just uninspiring turgid plodding sh*t with no melody. They didn't play any hits. They well and truly dissappeared up their own arse but looks like they are back

That's the best British Sea Power track for a very long time.
Much love for this thread by the way. If you can find 365 tracks of this standard and variety then I'll be highly impressed, and very grateful.

That's the best British Sea Power track for a very long time. Much love for this thread by the way. If you can find 365 tracks of this standard and variety then I'll be highly impressed, and very grateful. It's going to be a challenge especially come the summer to keep the standard up .... but another very Radio 6 Music friendly track today .... 05/01/2017 Elbow - All Disco The second new track taken from the uglier, more talented alternative universe version of Coldplay's new album ‘Little Fictions’, released 3rd February 2017. It's title is inspired from a phrase used in interview Radio 6 Music Sunday afternoon DJ Guy Garvey had with The Pixies Frank Black (Black Francis) about taking music seriously, but not too seriously.

06/01/2017 Kiesza - Dear Beloved
Sometimes I despair at the planet. What sort of a world is it where the top two tunes on iTunes is a Radio 1 friendly Tropical House track which should see Sia consulting her plagiarism lawyers because it is the most blatant rip off by a massive song since Roar = Brave, and it is easy to see why Rihanna turned it down rather than record an inferior rip off of Cheap Thrills, and lyrically would have been fine sung by Zayn; and the other by the same overrated ginger haired former roadie for Nizlopi is a Radio 2 friendly track which sounds like a James Bay b-side. Thankfully there is some good music about by red heads ....
Such as the Canadian female popstar's tribute to a dead friend who died of cancer, on this Stuart Price produced track which sounds like Chic featuring Nelly Furtado ... but deliberately understated, and not in your face, so no doubt it will be hated on P**J******.

07/01/2017 Jesca Hoop - The Lost Sky
The Santa Monica, alternative folk jazz blues singer-songwriter and guitarist lead track to her 7th album Memories Are Now released February 10th 2017 on Sub Pop records, is a Tori Amos meets PJ Harvey type tribute/lament to the late great David Bowie, who's 70th birthday would have been tomorrow .....

; 08/01/2017 David Bowie - No Plan "Here There’s no music here, I’m lost in streams of sound, Here am I nowhere now? No Plan.... " From beyond the grave on his 70th birthday. The reason why I regard Bowie as the great musical act ever is the way he cryptically constructed his music not as songs, but as pieces of art. Hence last night's Last Five Years Documentary confirmed the spaceman in the Blackstar video was a deceased Major Tom; and the song was the third of the trilogy (after Space Oddity & Ashes To Ashes); and his "Button Eyes" character was singing about a posthumous Major Tom (& hence a soon to be posthumous Bowie); the "Like a Bluebird I'll be free" in "Lazarus" was a specific reference to Bluebird K7 - the first successful jet-powered hydroplane in which Britain's Donald Campbell set seven world water speed records, and that the song was released to radio on the 49 anniversary of its first final practise runs on Coniston Water in 1966; and the video was released at exactly the same time on its final ill fated record breaking attempt run www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE2rxSQ5_tg; and that his final photo where David striked a pose where one finger of each hand points out and downwards and is slightly hooked was a specific reference to the painting, The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb which painting inspired Dostoevsky to write the novel The Idiot, which Bowie had read and suggested as the title for Iggy Pop's 1977 album.

I like that Kiesza choice. It becomes the second entry into my provisional year end Top 100. But I also like one of the Ed Sheeran tracks, and I don't see what's wrong with something being Radio 2 friendly or written by someone with ginger hair.
And it is a very odd alternative universe in which Elbow are better than Coldplay. Probably one where there's no such thing as melody, and where dirges are the highest form of musical achievement.

Forgot to post this yesterday ....
09/01/17 Dua Lipa - Thinking 'Bout You
The sixth single taken from her forever delayed self titled debut album released on 10th February. It reminds me of the wonderful acoustic soulful folk track's Adele recorded on her debut album 19, which she ditched by the time of her all conquering follow up 21.

10/01/2017 - Bebe Rexha - I Got You
The third single culled from the forthcoming album apparently out 20th January 2017, from the singer/songwriter born in Brooklyn, New York to ethnic Albanian parents, who emigrated to the United States in the 1980s. This is a superior tropical house track as you would expect from someone whom this decade has (co-)written hits for Rihanna; David Guetta; Pitbull; Iggy Azalea; G-Eazy; Eminem; Selena Gomez; Nicki Minaj; Tinashe; etc.
