Sam & Dave's soul classic reaches the top.
Her diva-style ballads around 1960-61 didn't go far on this chart but she did have a decent-sized hit with "Diamonds Are Forever" and now she has recorded a song from the musical "Sweet Charity" which lands Dame Shirley Bassey a high entry and a possible #1.
Next up, going all weird and African are Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Tich. It's nice at first but a tad repetitive.

Sam & Dave lead ahead of Shirley Bassey, whilst the highest new entry is by the Kinks, having left behind the summer of love we are now into Autumn and all the thinks Ray Davies likes about this season. In particular, his football on a Saturday. For whatever reason, this particular Saturday had only one top division match, which finished:
Fulham 2 - 4 Manchester City
Division 2 had a nearly full fixture list:
Aston Villa 3-2 Blackpool Charlton Athletic 2-2 Carlisle United Derby County 1-0 Huddersfield Town Norwich City 4-2 Birmingham City Plymouth Argyle 2-5 Hull City Portsmouth 2-0 Bristol City Preston North End 1-1 Ipswich Town Queens Park Rangers 3-1 Millwall Rotherham United 2-2 Bolton Wanderers
Charlton would finish 15th at the end of the season.

Shirley Bassey at #1. Who would have expected that when I was doing my charts of 1960-61?
A song that has been a hit in almost every decade in the UK, Everlasting Love enters for Robert Knight who had the original hit with it in the USA. In the UK the Love Affair would do so early in 1968, then Robert Knight's version was a hit in the 1970s. Rex Smith & Rachel Sweet did in the 80s, Casualty in the 1990s and I can't remember the others but some reality TV act I think did in the 00s.
Another Spanky & Our Gang hit. This one will probably get the video when I post it in the other topic when we get there. Cowsills will for the previous week - Cowsills did reach #2 in the USA with that hit.
Felice Taylor's hit (not on Spotify for some reason when some little known stuff is), an early "disco" song, co-written by Barry White and later recorded by his group "Love Unlimited".

-- ( -- ) You've Made Me So Very Happy - Brenda Holloway
Dionne Warwick gets the highest new entry with a Bacherach & David song and hopes for her first #1. I know Aretha Franklin also will record this song however her version is rather similar to this one.
That is different however to the song that enters at #36 this week where Marvin Gaye's version in 1969 is so superior that obviously I'm going to chart that.
Dave Clark Five's hit has the same title but is a different song to one of their 1965 releases.

A lot of new hits. The highest being the Monkees who started the year at #1 and may end it there. (Assuming this reaches #1 next week it would have to stay on top for 6 weeks. The biggest threat is actually a song that will enter in the next chart).

-- ( -- ) Mr Dream Merchant - Jerry Butler -- ( -- ) Skinny Legs And All - Joe Tex -- ( -- ) Train Tour To Rainbow City - Pyramids
As the Monkees climb to #1 we get that other song I was talking about entering at #4. We also see a top 10 entry for Smokey Robinson & The Miracles with one of their classic songs.
The Scaffold are a comedy act featuring Mike McGear. His brother is due into the chart next week... may be a bit of sibling rivalry at the top. Incidentally his brother has been a lot more successful than him so far...
Keith West gets his "other" hit in the chart. (A bit like Scott McKenzie lower down having had another song chart). Prior to this song, the Bee Gees thought the earth was flat. Diana Ross continues to take credit along with the Supremes and there's just enough room for a Tom Jones ballad to get into the chart, but no space for Jerry Butler, who had a #1 on this chart in 1962 with "Make It Easy On Yourself", and Joe Tex fails to get his latest song in. The Pyramids is a ska song where he namechecks loads of people on a supposed "ride".

-- ( 31 ) Pata Pata - Miriam Makeba (#20) -- ( 32 ) Love Is All Around - Troggs (#13) -- ( 33 ) Zabadak! - Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich (#7) -- ( 35 ) I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Gladys Knight & The Pips (#28) -- ( 36 ) Soul Man - Sam & Dave (#1[2]) -- ( 38 ) Glad To Be Unhappy - Mamas & The Papas (#31) -- ( 39 ) The Look Of Love - Dusty Springfield (#10) -- ( 40 ) Be Mine - Tremeloes (#38)
The Monkees remain at #1 with Simon Dupree pulling close in behind and these are just two fantastic songs great in their own way. Daydream Believer a catchy sing-a-long pop anthem and Kites a totally wonderful work of art.
So who will be Christmas #1? Well the Beatles get the highest entry but only at #11 this week and whilst this single managed 7 weeks at #1 in the UK and reached #1 in the USA too, it will have to get past several classics to get there, including the song at #6 by Paul McCartney's younger brother.
We will also see John Lennon's B-side "I Am The Walrus" potentially chart as part of the Magical Mystery Tour EP which gets released (with Your Mother Should Know as the 3rd song on the EP).
Meanwhile we get a quite unusual song by Traffic as the follow-up to their #2 "Hole In My Shoe" and a Box Tops song following up "The Letter" which reached #5 on this chart.

In the end the Monkees could only manage 2 weeks at #1 with Daydream Believer as Kites replaces it at #1. This happens in these years - a classic song then another one, and even if they both reach #1, their runs on top don't always look so long.
The above chart is dated 9th December 1967 and on 10th December 1967, Otis Redding died in a plane crash. His most famous song will be posthumously released very shortly, and will be competing with a singer who is 67 at this point (and still alive but will die within the next 4 years).
A tentative connection between this week's highest entry and the song at #5... Someone was obviously listening to this chart... Anyway it's a translation of a song originally in French, written by Belgian Jacques Brel. I'm not sure how close the translation is. Certainly this is very poetic.
Also a sibling connection between #4 and #6, and a future connection between the acts at #13 and #14. And then the new entry at #23 with the song that held that position last week that has fallen to #37 now.

The world is shocked by the passing of Otis Redding on 10th December 1967 in a plane crash.
In the chart the top 2 hold whilst the highest new entry is an American pop group who got the title from "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". Lower down we see John Lennon quote that song "See how they fly like Lucy in the sky" in his song "I Am The Walrus", which charts courtesy of being on the Magical Mystery Tour EP.
One of the new entries in this chart will be a bigger hit 34 years later.
Georgie Fame gets his 3rd UK top 10 hit which was also his 3rd UK #1. He didn't have any other top 10 hits.

I'm surprised some of these are lower than I would have expected them to be. I guess there were times of year where the chart was stronger and this is all done by a formula.
