My #1 finished up at #12 overall, but my #2 was #1 in this chart. That's a great chart though, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses each week.

Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood - Summer Wine
Classic track here. "Summer Wine" was originally released as the B-side of "Sugar Town". It was the first of Sinatra and Hazlewood's string of popular duets.
The song was later covered many times by different artists. I know two other versions, recorded by Scooter and a duet Ville Valo & Natalia Avelon.
I prefer to use UK chart, so will vote for "Summer Wine" and for "Sugar Town" too on the next week. But "Sugar Town" already was in US chart and got # 31 in our chart, so you can vote for this song on this week, if you want.

A quick run through of the new entries:-
Four Tops - STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF LOVE - a Holland-Dozier-Holland composition which was, obviously, a new entry in the UK Top 50 in this week of 1967
Wilson Pickett - EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY TO LOVE - approaching its peak position in the USA this week in 1967, this is actually a cover of a song originally recorded by Solomon Burke, which had already been used by the Rolling Stones on their 2nd LP; I first became aware of it thanks to its prominent use in the Blues Brothers film, and their 1990 single release was the song's only appearance in the UK Top 50; for me, Wilson Pickett's work-out is the best version
Simon Dupree & Big Sound - I SEE THE LIGHT - this was a minor hit on the Melody Maker and the Disc & Music Echo charts in January 1967, and was listed by the Record Retailer chart (the one we are using) as bubbling under; this track was the Portsmouth band's first single, and is my exciting discovery of the week; during their 1967 Scottish tour, they employed a pianist by the name of Reg Dwight, but they decided not to give him a permanent place in their band; 2 years later Simon Dupree & Big Sound had become Prog Rockers Gentle Giant, and Reg had become Elton John
Monkees - (I'M NOT YOUR) STEPPIN' STONE - the B-side of I'M A BELIEVER; later a Sex Pistols cash-in single
Tommy James & Shondells - I THINK WE'RE ALONE NOW - released this week in 1967, it wasn't a UK hit, but climbed to #4 in the USA; of course, everyone here will know it from Tiffany's 1987 cover; it was written by Richie Cordell who also wrote MONY MONY for Tommy James & Shondells

Interesting to see the Kinks beat the Monkees to #1 but I guess that kind of thing happens in a "first" chart like this as it's a good song even though that one has been around for quite a few weeks now. So in my chart it falls this week from #14 to #25 having peaked at #3.
14 January 1967:
1 ( 1 ) I'm A Believer - Monkees < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) I Feel Free - Cream 3 ( 3 ) Georgy Girl - Seekers 4 ( 4 ) Happy Jack - Who 5 ( 13 ) Night Of Fear - Move 6 ( 7 ) Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix 7 ( 8 ) Try A Little Tenderness - Otis Redding 8 ( -- ) Matthew And Son - Cat Stevens 9 ( 18 ) (We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet - Blues Magoos 10 ( 11 ) Nashville Cats - Lovin' Spoonful
11 ( 6 ) Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett (#4) 12 ( 5 ) That's Life - Frank Sinatra (#1[2]) 13 ( 21 ) 98.6 - Keith 14 ( 10 ) Standing In The Shadows Of Love - Four Tops (#10) 15 ( 15 ) (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone Monkees 16 ( 23 ) (How Can We) Hang On To A Dream - Tim Hardin 17 ( 9 ) Snoopy vs The Red Baron - Royal Guardsmen (#7) 18 ( 12 ) In The Country - Cliff Richard And The Shadows (#9) 19 ( 28 ) Run To The Door - Clinton Ford 20 ( 17 ) I've Passed This Way Before - Jimmy Ruffin (#17)
21 ( 30 ) There's Got To Be A Word! - Innocence 22 ( 25 ) Colour My World Petula Clark 23 ( 20 ) Any Way That You Want Me - Troggs (#20) 24 ( 16 ) Pamela Pamela - Wayne Fontana (#7) 25 ( 14 ) Dead End Street - Kinks (#3) 26 ( -- ) Knight In Rusty Armour - Peter And Gordon 27 ( 19 ) Save Me - Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich (#11) 28 ( 22 ) I Need Somebody - ? & The Mysterians (#15) 29 ( 27 ) Tell It To The Rain - Four Seasons (#27) 30 ( 39 ) Where Will The Words Come From - Gary Lewis & The Playboys
31 ( -- ) Look What You've Done - Pozo Seco Singers 32 ( 40 ) Gallant Men - Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen 33 ( 29 ) Tell It Like It Is - Aaron Neville (#25) 34 ( 24 ) Mellow Yellow - Donovan (#1[2]) 35 ( 35 ) Island In The Sun - Righteous Brothers 36 ( 31 ) Words Of Love - Mamas & The Papas (#27) 37 ( 26 ) A Hazy Shade Of Winter - Simon & Garfunkel (#3) 38 ( -- ) Blue Autumn - Bobby Goldsboro 39 ( 32 ) There Won't Be Many Coming Home - Roy Orbison (#13) 40 ( 37 ) It's Only Love - Tommy James & The Shondells (#28)
-- ( 33 ) Mame - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (#8) -- ( 34 ) Under New Management - Barron Knights (#15) -- ( 36 ) Sugar Town - Nancy Sinatra (#21) -- ( 38 ) Missy Missy - Paul and Barry Ryan (#23)
As we get into a new year, we have only a few new ones this week but there is a big one as Cat Stevens gets his 2nd hit, with an unchanged top 3 to try to break into. The Move get a decent climb too and hope to make more progress next week.

So much good music then, this is going to be fun, but I do feel the chart may move more slowly as songs hung around more then? I thought this too. And so I've checked. This week's chart in 1967: average duration in the Top 50 is 6.6 weeks This week's Top 50 in 1985: average duration in the Top 100 is 7.6 weeks Allowing for records taking (on average) a week to move from positions 51-100 up to the Top 50, then the longevity is about the same. (Remember, a lot of records would have been new entries straight into the Top 50 in 1985, which balances those which take 2 weeks to climb into the Top 50). But, we only have half the number of records to chose from in 1967 compared to 1985. So, although the turnover of the Top 50 is roughly the same as 1985, our chart will probably move more slowly, because we won't be picking from stuff outside the Top 50 as often.

If you use the US chart as well as the UK chart there are usually approximately 10 new songs per week. Some are brilliant classics, some awful and most fall somewhere in between for me.
When I do this I have a playlist of approximately 40 songs covering 4 weeks, and I start off by just picking off the top few, often between 8 and 15. A few have already been eliminated, and the rest get put in there somewhere.
I can provide a list of what songs I playlisted as entries each week. Remember I remove second versions of songs, and also for you, songs that appear in one chart in 1967 that have already appeared in the other in 1966 would not get listed.

I thought my charts were going to be slow moving but I've learned so many great tracks already that I want them all to be big hits! I've got 12 new entries this week just from this thread.

This is a compromise between what I liked at the time and since, UK/US charts based. Climbers may still climb and those dropping out of the UK charts are lower than they would have peaked at had I done 1966 charts. As I do my charts on a Sunday, I'm taking 8th January 1967 as my publication date Alex should approve of 5, 6 and 10 but it's safe to say the entire top 10 have topped my chart since over the years (or would have if they'd charted - a couple are still waiting) along with loads lower down. 1 MATTHEW AND SON Cat Stevens 2 I’M A BELIEVER The Monkees 3 YOU KEEP ME HANGIN’ ON The Supremes 4 I’M NOT YOUR STEPPIN' STONE The Monkees 5 SINGLE GIRL Sandy Posey 6 SUMMER WINE Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood 7 FRIDAY ON MY MIND The Easybeats 8 GOOD VIBRATIONS The Beach Boys 9 SITTING IN THE PARK Georgie Fame 10 SUGAR TOWN Nancy Sinatra 11 I FEEL FREE Cream 12 WHAT BECOMES OF THE BROKEN-HEARTED Jimmy Ruffin 13 GEORGY GIRL The Seekers 14 98.6 Keith 15 FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH Buffalo Springfield 16 MELLOW YELLOW Donovan 17 GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME Tom Jones 18 HEY JOE The Jimi Hendrix Expereince 19 WHAT WOULD I BE Val Doonican 20 REACH OUT I’LL BE THERE The Four Tops 21 DISTANT DRUMS Jim Reeves 22 NIGHT OF FEAR The Move 23 STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF LOVE The Four Tops 24 HAPPY JACK The Who 25 PAMELA PAMELA Wayne Fontana 26 (I KNOW) I'M LOSING YOU The Temptations 27 MORNINGTOWN RIDE The Seekers 28 WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL New Vaudeville Band 29 JUST ONE SMILE Gene Pitney 30 WORDS OF LOVE The Mamas & The Papas 31 SNOOPY VS THE RED BARON The Royal Guardsmen 32 MUSIC TO WATCH GIRLS BY The Bob Crewe Generation 33 SEMI-DETACHED SUBURBAN MR JAMES Manfred Mann 34 GIMME SOME LOVIN’ The Spencer Davis Group 35 I THINK WE’RE ALONE NOW Tommy James & The Shondells 36 TELL IT TO THE RAIN The Four Seasons 37 THE BEAT GOES ON Sonny & Cher 38 TELL IT LIKE IT IS Aaron Neville 39 HIGH TIME Paul Jones 40 I’VE PASSED THIS WAY BEFORE Jimmy Ruffin 41 ANY WAY THAT YOU WANT ME The Troggs 42 COLOR MY WORLD Petula Clark 43 DEADLIER THAN THE MALE The Walker Brothers 44 SAVE ME Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich 45 A PLACE IN THE SUN Stevie Wonder 46 HOLY COW Lee Dorsey 47 I’M READY FOR LOVE Martha & The Vandellas 48 IN THE COUNTRY Cliff Richard 49 NASHVILLE CATS The Lovin’ Spoonful 50 THAT’S LIFE Frank Sinatra
