The Blue Magoos song in my chart sounds nothing like Bachman Turner Overdrive, but does sound somewhat similar to a well-known Deep Purple song...

I'm off work sick, so that gives me the chance to have a listen to all the songs in the charts, might mean my chart changes a bit as two songs I've heard, I know I really like, and so have added them, moved them up higher.

1 [7] :: Four Tops - STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF LOVE 2 [8] :: Monkees - I'M A BELIEVER 3 [new] :: Rolling Stones - RUBY TUESDAY 4 [2] :: Four Tops - REACH OUT I'LL BE THERE 5 [1] :: Beach Boys - GOOD VIBRATIONS 6 [new] :: Rolling Stones - LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER 7 [18] :: Monkees - (I'M NOT YOUR) STEPPIN' STONE 8 [9] :: Wilson Pickett - EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY TO LOVE 9 [4] :: Kinks - DEAD END STREET 10 [3] :: Supremes - YOU KEEP ME HANGIN' ON 11 [5] :: Easybeats - FRIDAY ON MY MIND 12 [11] :: Cliff Richard & Shadows - IN THE COUNTRY 13 [12] :: Cream - I FEEL FREE 14 [6] :: Spencer Davis Group - GIMME SOME LOVING 15 [17] :: Simon Dupree & Big Sound - I SEE THE LIGHT 16 [15] :: Martha & Vandellas - I'M READY FOR LOVE 17 [new] :: Percy Sledge - IT TEARS ME UP 18 [new] :: Olympics - BABY DO THE PHILLY DOG 19 [13] :: Tom Jones - GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME 20 [10] :: Seekers - MORNINGTOWN RIDE
NEW ENTRIES:
Rolling Stones - LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER :: It was 50 years ago yesterday (15th January) that the Stones infamously appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and were ordered to change the lyrics to "Let's spend some time together". Jagger rolled his eyes while he sang the censored lyric, and nobody of a sensitive disposition was offended.
Rolling Stones - RUBY TUESDAY :: Some people consider this to have been a AA-side with "Let's Spend The Night Together", whilst others say it was the B-side. Regardless, it got lots of radio airplay thanks to the risqué lyrics of the A-side. To me, it is one of the Stones' most beautiful songs, and it accordingly charts higher on my list.
Percy Sledge - IT TEARS ME UP :: Bubbled under the Record Retailer Top 50 for a fortnight, made it into the Disc & Music Echo chart, and reached the US Top 20. Showcases Percy's vocal talents superbly - emotional without being overwrought.
The Olympics - BABY DO THE PHILLY DOG :: A Northern Soul classic, which reached #63 in the USA, and spend a single week bubbling under in the UK. The Olympics had started out as a Los Angeles doo-wop group, and had been going for 10 years by 1967. This was the last of their 14 American hits, two of which reached the official UK chart.

My featured track is a song written by Arthur Lee from his Elektra records band's forthcoming album Da Capo. This psychedelic folk rock recording failed to chart in the USA, although it is probably more famous for the chorus, riff, instrumentation and structure of Madonna's song "Beautiful Stranger," from the soundtrack of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, sounding remarkably similar to this track. A ridiculous 1999 "Blurred Lines" in reverse case resulted in Madonna's attorney's successfully counter-suing for damages from Arthur Lee for claiming she had ripped off this song, resulting in him filing for bankruptcy! (He was currently in jail at the time of the case due to California's 3 strikes and you go to jail policy; and most musical experts at the time regarded Madonna attorney's success was due to him playing the man and not the ball) as a result once he was released from jail in 2001 the likes of Bruce Springsteen; Robert Plant; Neil Young; & David Bowie hired Arthur Lee's Love as a support act on tours .....

15th January 1967
thanks for some of the more obscure youtube links, they gave me a few discoveries, as entered into the chart below at the lower end. Another new one to me is Felice Taylor's version of the 1975 Love Unlimited hit - not surprisingly originally done by Felice (Barry White's protege, while Love Unlimited featured his missus). Barry graduated onto The Banana Splits within months...
I've corrected the Donovan song - I had the wrong one listed last week - and have gone for the much superior Ruby Tuesday to the rather bland Let's Spend The Night Together, never did rate it much. The Buckinghams I discovered back in the 90's on a Florida oldies station, Paul Jones I loved as a kid, and have seen ol' Paul a few times over the years (in Othello, as part of the Blues Band, and with the Manfreds). The Casinos song was a US hit in a version by Glen Campbell I know better, and the Love track, while not exactly Alone Again Or standard, is very much Beautiful Stranger in style if not actual substance.
The Monkees and Cat Stevens would have been my joint faves at the time, so I see no reason not to reflect that accurately as I still love both to bits, and then some.
1 ( 2 ) I’M A BELIEVER The Monkees 2 ( 1 ) MATTHEW AND SON Cat Stevens 3 ( 5 ) SINGLE GIRL Sandy Posey 4 ( 4 ) I’M NOT YOUR STEPPIN' STONE The Monkees 5 ( 6 ) SUMMER WINE Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood 6 ( 16 ) SUNSHINE SUPERMAN Donovan 7 ( 9 ) SITTING IN THE PARK Georgie Fame 8 ( 3 ) YOU KEEP ME HANGIN’ ON The Supremes 9 ( 10 ) SUGAR TOWN Nancy Sinatra 10 ( 11 ) I FEEL FREE Cream
