HAVEN COMBI RETRO CHART W/B 13th JANUARY 1985

A third week at number one for Foreigner with I Want To Know What Love Is as they amass an enormous 200 points this week – the highest weekly score in almost two years since Bonnie Tyler topped the charts in March 1983 with Total Eclipse Of The Heart.




Strawberry Switchblade continue their slow ascent of the Top 40 as they reach number 2 on their 12th week on the chart. They’ve got their work cut out to go any higher though, with a 61 point gap between them and the top of the chart.


Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson move up to number four with I Know Him So Well and Bryan Adams is up to number five with Run To You.


Prince gets a couple of re-entries as Little Red Corvette and 1999 crash back into the chart.


This week’s biggest climber is The Boys Of Summer from Don Henley, up 20 places to number 18

The UK #60 hit which went top 40 in Germany, sound musically like a cross between Queen & Bryan Adams. A very catchy tune which deserved to do better, but even back in 1985 those lyrics put off radio programmers.

Two songs in the chart for Phil Collins, who gets a solo entry as well as his duet with Philip Bailey, and two for Prince, whose latest US hit "I Would Die 4 U" gets an entry adding to his re-issued "Little Red Corvette" which is currently in the UK chart (with a reissue of 1999 as a double A-side).

For Kirsty MacColl, it's her first hit since her debut in 1981 with "There's A Guy Works Down The Chipshop Swears He's Elvis". It doesn't feel like she has been away as Tracey Ullman had a hit with a cover of her song "They Don't Know" and her song "Terry" should have been a hit but wasn't. In any case, this is a song she didn't write, it's a cover of Billy Bragg and she has worked around the gender changes somewhat although it doesn't totally make sense sung by a woman. However the arrangement seems to work well, especially as it's produced by Steve Lillywhite who also produces U2 and they get married at some point around now..

A couple of great songs just outside the UK top 40, but I'm sure they'll get into it soon....

I didn't know it before, but my # 1 "Rose Rose I Love You" is a cover version.
The original is old Chinese song. English language version, recorded by Frankie Laine was US # 3 in 1951.

Petula Clark also covered this song in English with new lyrics under the title "May Kway." This lyric entered the UK sheet music charts on May 5, 1951 and peaked at #16.
