Similar idea to what I do with the Premier League/Football League rankings at the end of the season. This is the average ranking for NFL teams during the Super Bowl era (1966-present). Rankings each year are determined by: i) Playoff progression ii) Regular season record iii) Head-to-head record (if applicable) iv) Strength of schedule (if two or more teams are tied, the team with the more difficult schedule, determined by combined win-loss record of opponents, gets the higher ranking) Pos. | Last | 2016 rank | Team | Ave. | 1 | 2 | 3 | Pittsburgh Steelers | 10.431 | 2 | 1 | 5 | Dallas Cowboys | 10.451 | 3 | 3 | 13 | Denver Broncos | 12.039 | 4 | 5 | 1 | New England Patriots | 12.275 | 5 | 4 | 18 | Minnesota Vikings | 12.392 | 6 | 6 | 11 | Miami Dolphins | 12.765 | 7 | 9 | 4 | Green Bay Packers | 12.784 | 8 | 8 | 17 | Baltimore Ravens | 13.095 | 9 | 7 | 31 | San Francisco 49ers | 13.235 | 10 | 10 | 9 | Oakland Raiders | 13.549 | 11 | 11 | 19 | Indianapolis Colts | 14.196 | 12 | 13 | 16 | Washington Redskins | 14.392 | 13 | 12 | 21 | Philadelphia Eagles | 14.412 | 14 | 14 | 7 | Seattle Seahawks | 14.659 | 15 | 16 | 6 | Kansas City Chiefs | 14.961 | 16 | 15 | 28 | Los Angeles Rams | 15.137 | 17 | 17 | 10 | New York Giants | 15.275 | 18 | 19 | 15 | Tennessee Titans | 15.843 | 19 | 18 | 26 | San Diego Chargers | 15.961 | 20 | 20 | 30 | Chicago Bears | 16.137 | 21 | 21 | 25 | Carolina Panthers | 16.409 | 22 | 22 | 27 | New York Jets | 16.490 | 23 | 23 | 23 | Buffalo Bills | 17.118 | 24 | 26 | 2 | Atlanta Falcons | 17.510 | 25 | 25 | 24 | Cincinnati Bengals | 17.551 | 26 | 24 | 32 | Cleveland Browns | 17.708 | 27 | 27 | 22 | New Orleans Saints | 18.060 | 28 | 28 | 12 | Detroit Lions | 18.216 | 29 | 29 | 20 | Arizona Cardinals | 18.451 | 30 | 31 | 8 | Houston Texans | 18.867 | 31 | 30 | 29 | Jacksonville Jaguars | 19.500 | 32 | 32 | 14 | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 19.951 |
Where teams have relocated, they take the team's record with them, except in the case of the Baltimore Ravens, who are considered a separate team to the original Cleveland Browns. When the new Cleveland Browns team was formed in 1999, they inherited the record of their predecessor team. The San Diego Chargers will move to Los Angeles for the 2017 season. The Oakland Raiders have applied to move to Las Vegas, though this is subject to approval.
