Ok, this is the bit where Thorney gets all excited by the new entry at #18. It did have the advantage over the rest that I'd heard it already on non-hit single of the month, and it enters only this week as you know because they finally put out a video for it.

It isn't the highest new entry though. That's some old-fashioned jazzy song with a lot of scatting in it by a female singer called Earl. She wears red in the video (not purple) but she is quite pretty. That's not why it charted so high though, I just like it.

Any thoughts on that, and also on the song that has been #1 for 5 weeks (and yeah I know it sounds a bit like the Smiths).

Wow I knew it would have had some effect but #18 is amazing , they chose to hold the video back for the album and even though it got 150000 plays in 24 hours the album still flopped here and US

New Old World still at #1, making it 6 weeks. Not sure how it stayed on top so long, actually. It looked like it might be topped after 2 or 3 weeks when Dropkick Murphys came but then nothing after that came that looked like it would remove it from the top and so it's still there. Next week probably won't be. I thought Amelia Curran might be #1 when that was on the playlist too.

Among the new entries, Ed Sheeran actually gets into the chart. This song got a video in the previous week. So did "Shape Of You" but that song is awful. Not sure why it is so popular. However "Castle On The Hill" is a good song and perhaps deserved to enter higher and might make a big climb next week.

It's been a pattern over the last few years that we have a long-running (at least 5 weeks) #1 right at the start of the year. This is the run since 2012:

2012: Missing Andy - Dave (5 weeks, from 14 January)
2013: Tich - Breathe In Breathe Out (6 weeks, from 5 January)
2014: Lucy Spraggan - Tea And Toast (5 weeks, from 4 January)
2015: Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott - Real Hope (6 weeks, from 27 December 2014)
2016: Lost Van Goghs - Time Of My Life (7 weeks, from 9 January)
2017: New Old World - Suppression Starts At School (6 weeks, from 14 January)

In 2010 and 2011 we also had a new 5 week #1 hit the top by the last week of January. (2010 on 30 January, 2011 on 29 January)

2008 also had a 5-week #1 on the first week of the year but in 2009 we had to wait until February to get the first 5-week #1 (Jake. with Lost Shoes).

In 2007, no single topped my chart for longer than 4 weeks. The Christmas #1 of 2006 did however stay on top for 6 weeks.
