HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 17th FEBRUARY 1985

A complete re-shuffle of the Top Five sees Kirsty MacColl relinquishing the top spot with a big drop to number five. 

The battle for this week’s number one was closely fought, with Don Henley’s The Boys Of Summer leading the way for most of the week, but the final chart of the week posted by Mark swung things in favour of Dead Or Alive who take over at the top with You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)




Dead Or Alive have taken a long and winding path over the last fourteen weeks in their climb to the top. This is by far the longest time taken by a record to reach our number one. The previous longest was a nine week journey to the top from Frankie Goes To Hollywood with Relax, which ended up as our fourth biggest song of 1984. By strange coincidence Relax is back in the chart this week, courtesy of a high re-entry on popchartfreak’s chart.


This week’s highest new entry is from ZZ Top with Legs, in at number 23, with Prince and The Revolution getting an even higher re-entry at number 14 with Let’s Go Crazy.

I thought the Smiths wouldn't get to #1 as it's the sort of song that appeals to only some of us. At least #2 is a far better peak than the #24 it got to in the UK chart. (Yeah I think it got to #16 in 1992).

The release this week of Bryan Adams' brilliant "Reckless" album sees all 3 of the non-A-side / B-side tracks enter my chart. Also the Bangles' debut single, which spent a solitary week at #96 in the Record Mirror chart.

At the time I was surveying the wintry rural Dorset roads for a freezing living, and I was getting all nostalgic for the early 70's - witness the Shaft cover version and a David Cassidy comeback with an assist from George Michael. All very sad with the loss of George and the announcement of David's dementia. I listed the Prince double A together, so sadly I'm sticking with what I did at the time (cos it cuts down on the points of Let's Go Crazy, the track I preferred, Take Me With U would have been listed somewhere outside the top 20 at this point). Note I also under-rated The Smiths classic first time round, like most of the record-buying public, oops!
