This chart sees the Small Faces get a high entry with a song sung in a "cockney" accent. The second highest entry is a Bob Dylan song, then we have more by the Kinks.

The Small Faces knock Cliff Richard off the top as the song that beat him in the Eurovision Song Contest sits just below the chart as a non-entrant.
Most of those that did enter the chart are Motown acts but we also have Engelbert who himself entered Eurovision a long time later, with a song title that was previously used for a UK eurovision entry but isn't the same song, this actually being an Italian song translated. It got to #2 in the UK. Don't expect it to reach those heights here, but at least it has entered the chart.
The other entry by Procol Harum scraped one week at #50 in the UK.

Yet another classic chart. The highest new entry comes from a band that we will hear a lot more from in the early 1970s. Actually not the greatest week for new entries. Still, the top end of the chart is rather special.
By the way, did that Des O'Connor song get to UK #1? I seem to recall he got there with this. Not sure how so many songs out at the same time could all get to #1.

Something about long songs with many parts has fascinated me. Macarthur Park grabs a week at #1 but may be toppled by the Rolling Stones next week. We've already had "Sky Pilot" spend a week at #1 earlier this year. There are some other long songs around at this time, although not all of them have multiple parts.

I started the retro-charts in February 2015 at the start of January 1960 and the aim was to get to the end of 1976 when I started doing my regular chart. With that in mind, I have just reached halfway.
At the start of my modern chart era, there was still a Manfred Mann but he had an "Earth Band" and had covered a Bruce Springsteen song. The Rolling Stones were still going. Cliff Richard too, and both Smokey Robinson and The Miracles were charting separately.
In this week the highest new entry by Johnny Cash was originally a studio recording for him around 1955 but he recorded a live version in Folsom Prison itself in 1968 and that became his hit version in the USA.
Cliff Richard and Smokey Robinson both fail to chart this week, the former after having reached #1 with his last single. Vince Hill however does take his relatively minor UK hit into the basement position on this chart, which I think is his first ever entry after many attempts. There's another jazzy hit for Louis Armstrong, and one entry above that, the rather unusual UK #1 for the Crazy World of Arthur Brown.
The other entry is a new entry by Bruce Channel, his first since "Hey Baby" in 1962 reached #2 on this chart.

Manchester City won the football league. This was the first time since their rather lucky title of 1937 which was followed by a relegation. So we'll see if they get relegated again in 1969.
West Bromwich Albion won the FA Cup, beating Everton in the final.
Not always taken seriously, but now the League Cup has the major clubs playing in it, and Don Revie's Leeds United beat Arsenal 1-0 to give them a trophy. They have finished runners-up in the league a couple of seasons recently but hadn't won anything.
In Scotland, Celtic won the league, so nothing new there, and also won the Scottish League Cup in an 8 goal final, beating Dundee 5-3. In the Scottish Cup, an unusual name Dunfermline Athletic successful 3-1 against Heart of Midlothian.
Within Europe there was both an international contest and club competitions. Manchester United became the first English (but 2nd British) club to win the European Cup, beating Benfica 4-1 in extra time. Benfica had Eusebio playing for them and at the end of extra time was clean through, but Alex Stepney managed to thwart him.
England's hopes in the Cup-Winners Cup were ended when Tottenham lost to Olympique Lyonnais in the newly introduced away goals rule. Cardiff (representing Wales) made it to the semi-final where they lost to Hamburg. The winners were AC Milan 2-0 in the final.
In the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, Leeds United were victorious, so two cup trophies, beating Ferencvaros 1-0 on aggregate in the final.
The international contest that was Euro 1968 was contested in the finals between Italy, Yugoslavia, England and the Soviet Union with Italy winning very luckily because they only got through against the Soviet Union by a coin toss. The latter though did lose to England in a 3rd place playoff. Yugoslavia beat England 1-0 then lost to Italy in a replay 2-0. Dzajic's 86th minute goal meant England could not hold both European and World Cup trophies at once.
American Football: the second Superbowl was won by the Green Bay Packers beating the Oakland Raiders 33-14.
Baseball: The Detroit Tigers won the world series by 4 games to 3 against the St Louis Cardinals.
Tennis: Rod Laver beat Tony Roche at Wimbledon in straight sets whilst Billie Jean King beat Judy Tegart, also in straight sets. In the US Open, Arthur Ashe was successful in the men's title against Tom Okker but required 5 sets to do so, whilst Virginia Wade beat Bille Jean King rather comfortably 6-4, 6-2.
Snooker: This is the last year where the world champion simply took challenges and John Pulman continued to reign as the top player. From 1969 there will be knockout matches to find a world champion.

No change at #1 this week.
Originally recorded by Kim Weston in 1963 with the Supremes on backing vocals, and a UK hit for Yvonne Fair in 1976, Gladys Knight's version of "It Should Have Been Me" was the only US top 40 hit version, and only just. Meanwhile the original backing band on the song get their own entry in the basement position.
The only other entry this week is a song that was the last UK top 10 hit for Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Tich, and the follow-up to their only UK #1 "Legend Of Xanadu". On this chart they have also had one #1, with "Bend It".

A new entry for a US #1 by the Doors, and an instrumental (but not really classical) tune by Mason Williams, who earlier in the year composed the music for the UK #1 "Cinderella Rockerfeller".
The tune by the Nice is an instrumental version of the song from West Side Story, written by Leonard Bernstein around 1957.
Blur were influenced by the Small Faces and also recorded a song called The Universal but they are not the same song.

Steppenwolf get to #1.
The British Hit Singles volumes incorrectly labelled them as a US band but in fact they were Canadian. This song was their only UK hit and first charted a year later peaking at #30 then getting a #18 peak in 1999, but it was first out in the USA in 1968 peaking at #2 though, and it will not be their only hit.
Canned Heat are an American blues rock band. They had higher singles chart peaks in the UK though. This is one of their classic songs.
We also have one of the Beach Boys UK #1 hits, an old song covered by many artists but I think Mama Cass's is among the more famous recordings, Roy Orbison with a ballad and a US #1 for the Rascals.

Steppenwolf remain at #1. The highest entry is another posthumous hit for Otis Redding, a song also covered by the Black Crowes among others.
Entering a bit lower, an instrumental perfect for the warm weather, especially for watching cricket.
Amen Corner's uptempo hit gets the 3rd entry.

Sadly Cliff lost two times, when he should win in both contests.
On that moment of time, Spain - 1968 and Luxembourg - 1973 were my two least Eurovision winners.
After it we got two bad winners from Israel in the end of 70s decade and many additional awful winners in future.
My favourites from Eurovision 1968 : Luxembourg and Finland.

Israel potentially had better Eurovision entries in 1982 and 1983 when they were runners up both times, one of those was with Ofra Haza.
Anyway, back to 1968:

Steppenwolf get a 3rd week at #1 and the Kinks hold off Otis Redding for now, but that one could still challenge for the top next week.

A relatively quiet week for new entries, but one crashes in at #5. The song was actually co-written by Marty Wilde (remember him?) together with Ronnie Scott (not the jazz musician) and given to the band The Bystanders, who were managed by Ronnie at the time, but their version was not a hit. It was originally entitled "When Jesamine Goes".
