Based on UK charts or any other criteria.
P.S : it's retro part of our forum, so we don't talk about the current charts and modern music.

For me 73-76
Terrible fashions , I hate most glam , too much soppy mor ballads sorry Last Dreamer, no attitude just silly party music or love songs, yes I know the album chart told a different story but even as a 6 year old nu-wave couldn't come fast enough. Without ABBA and some decent disco I don't know how I would ever have liked pop music at all until Blondie and The police came along to save things.

From the 1960s years I have covered so far the worst year was 1962. There was some good music in that year, but it was mostly just dance-obsessed. Twist, Mashed potato, watusi etc. The Beatles were waiting to happen. Rock & Roll had lots a number of its main stars.
From the 1970s I'm not sure. The start of 1977 strikes me as extremely weak chart-wise. The second half of that year is generally good. Mid-70s were good though: we had Queen, Elton John, David Bowie, Paul McCartney & Wings, Pink Floyd etc. and yeah, Abba. I know we also had The Stylistics etc. and the Osmonds (not Crazy Horses which was good).
From the 1980s the weakest years were 1988-89, dominated by Stock Aitken Waterman and second rate house, until the Madchester movement came in to take over.
In the 1990s: well 1993 and 1999. 1993 was the bridge between Madchester and Britpop when it was just all reggae crazy, and 1999 was boyband and dull dance music.
In the 2000s, which is retro, most of it. Good music was the exception rather than the rule. 2004-2006 was the strongest period. 2000 probably the weakest year, so that links in with 1999.
(By the way, The Police were a decent band but I don't think they "saved" music in any way).

Neil I was 6 hardly a connieseur of rock history for me bands like them Blondie, Boomtown Rats and Adam & The Ants were saving it for me . If you grew up in a house that played Scottish trad music and C&W it was like punk to me.

I was brought up in a house of classical music and some big-band swing stuff that my dad also liked.
When I was young, pop music was T-Rex, Gary Glitter, Alice Cooper, David Bowie in the Ziggy Stardust era, Elton John, Slade, The Sweet etc.

My least favourite period is 90-94. The invasion of dance music (Snap, 2 Unlimited, Prodigy, Adamski, The KLF, The Shamen e.t.c) in UK chart.
Also it's the hardest time for completing my weekly retro charts, even top 20 is a big challenge.
Some years ago I did my # 1 list, based on UK Singles Chart, but honestly don't remember almost a half from this time period.
