At number one is in my opinion the best rap record of the first half of the 1980s. Gary Byrd was a New York radio DJ, whom assembled a supergroup to back his rap poetry on this Stevie Wonder tune. The 12" version of this UK #6 ran for 10 minutes 35 seconds, making it one of the longest tracks ever to chart in the UK. It presented a wide-ranging historical narrative of human progress (beginning with the ancient Egyptians and continuing to the present day) with an emphasis on African heritage. The vocalists who sung on the track alongside Stevie Wonder consisted of Teena Marie, Crystal Blake, Syreeta Wright & the Andrea Crouch singers. The other musicians on the track alongside Stevie Wonder included Nile Rodgers, Randy Jackson, & Narada Michael Walden. Alas the performance at the White House being watched by President Barrack Obama featuring Stevie Wonder, Nile Rodgers, Randy Jackson, Siedah Garrett, Chaka Khan with Chuck D rapping has been removed from youtube. No doubt as it's black empowerment message is deeply offensive to some alt-right Trump supporting fascist.
The synth pop Basildon Boys are responsible for my highest new entry with this Construction Time Again lead UK #6 single which was a social commentary on Reaganomics/Thatcherism.

Thanks for this as I spotted a mistake in my 1983 list, I somehow missed 'Moonlight Shadow' it will be going straight in very high, phew!! And yes 'The Crown' is great but it failed to make my top 100

My highest new entry in this week is from the Philadelphia 1970s session multi-instrumentalist who worked with Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, George Benson, Barbra Streisand, Stanley Clarke, David Sanborn, Donna Summer, Sérgio Mendes, Miguel Mateos and New Edition. This Phil Ramone produced post disco track was used in the 1983 film Flashdance, and reached USA #1, Canada #1, Australia #2, made the top 5 in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, but stalled at UK #43.
My other track is the 1980s synth pop torch song with the lyrical twist: is the singer jealous of her ex's new romance or envious of his conquest? Lennox appears in the video with a number of different Bowie-esque inspired personas (including one which Lady Gaga has said was the direct inspiration/tribute as her Jo Calderone male drag persona); whilst Stewart appears in the video, escorted by a variety of different women played by a variety of guest stars including Cheryl Baker and Jay Aston of Bucks Fizz, Kiki Dee, Hazel O'Connor, Kate Garner of Haysi Fantayzee, Ann Dudley, Therese Bazar of Dollar, Claudia Brucken of Propaganda, model Sophie Ward, and all four members of Bananarama (including Stewart's future wife, Siobhan Fahey and future group member Jacquie O'Sullivan who would replace Fahey in Bananarama in 1988), and the gender-bending pop star friend of Boy George, Marilyn.

The song's theme involves a young man's longing for a particular prostitute (based on a story Phil Collins had read in David Niven's biography), and the inspiration for Collins's laugh came from rap music pioneer Grandmaster Flash's song "The Message".
The other featured track is the languid solo UK #11, USA #20, Canada #23, & Australia #23 hit by the former Led Zeppelin frontman from his second solo album The Principle of Moments.

My highest new entry is the Italian American from New York homage to the Motown Sound, which was the lead single taken from his Phil Ramone produced throwback/homage album An Innocent Man. It reached USA #1, Canada #5, Australia #9, but initially stalled at UK #96, before peaking at UK #4 & Ireland #2 after it was reissued after the follow up single ... The fun nostalgic video shows Joel singing the song as if he were a performing guest on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1963.
The featured track is the Jazz keyboardist electro pop USA #71, UK #8, Australia #72 & top ten throughout Europe instrumental featuring the Godley & Creme directed 5 times MTV Award winning video.

My highest new entry is Boy George's group's signature tune from their second album Colours By Numbers, which topped nearly every national chart. In the year end sales charts it ranked UK #1, USA #10, Canada #5, & Australia #8.
The second track is by the same act from their Kissing To Be Clever album, it was never released as a single in Europe but probably should have been as it reached USA #9, Canada #5 & Australia #1. Today it gets frequent plays as an 80s oldie on Radio 2 ... far more than most 1980s UK top ten hits ...

My highest of ten Retro Rewind new entries is this dream pop music collective led by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of the British record label 4AD. This featured track is a cover of the folk troubadour Tim Buckley 1968 composition sung by the ethereal vocals of Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins. She would later date Tim Buckley son Jeff Buckley who was most definitely a chip off the old block. This single peaked at UK #66 yet apparently spent 101 weeks inside the UK top 200!
The other featured track is the UK #17 & USA #106 breakthrough single by the Celtic rock band that formed in Rhyl, Wales helmed by Mike Peters.

Debuting at #1 scoring their 4th Retro Rewind chart topper is the Alex Sadkin produced lead single from the Birmingham New Romantics band's third album Seven and the Ragged Tiger reached UK #3, USA #3, Canada #2, & Australia #4. Its video was shot in Australia and was controversially released to MTV a whole week before the single was released on radio, so resulting in UK radio largely snubbing it, such as Radio 1 only placing it on the C Playlist.
The other track is the London new wave group who were more successful in North America than in Europe with their UK #86, USA #4, Canada #1 & Australia #38 produced by Rupert Hine.

The other featured track is the debut UK #3, USA #27, Australia #60, & Canada #22 Colin Thurston produced single by the Southampton born synth pop singer/songwriter. In retrospect it is easy to see the influence of Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill.

The highest of ten new entries comes from the Manchester indie pop band with their second single composed by frontman Morrissey & guitarist Johnny Marr. The other featured track is by the Detroit born film director Lynn Goldsmith, and celebrity portrait photographer with her only album under this moniker with her all star self-help comedy music album Dancing With Mental Health from which this UK #17 song co-composed with producer Nile Rodgers, Todd Rundgren & Steve Winwood was taken.
