LP Def Leppard - Gods Of War (1LP Hysteria)
Climbing to the top of my Retro Rewind Chart is the Sheffield hard rock group's comeback UK #6, USA #19, Canada #21 & Australia #46 single, their first from their career defining Hysteria album produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange.
My highest new entry was the Stephen Hague produced second single from Actually, which brought Britain's greatest blue eyed soul female singer back into the charts after a decade and a half. It peaked at UK #2, USA #2, Canada #3, & Australia #22. Despite going top 5 nearly everywhere in Europe it only topped the charts in Ireland.
My featured faller is XTC + producer John Leckie late 1960s alto-egos with this Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band inspired effort, which was the lead single from their Psonic Psunspot mini-album/double EP. Its ramshackle video captures the mood of the song perfectly. Or maybe it is our Swindon sense of humour?

40 Primal Scream - Imperial (3wks 34-31-40)
LP Jesus & Mary Chain - Nine Million Rainy Days (1LP Darklands)
Leeds Gothic rock band debut on top my Retro Rewind chart with their UK #7 written by Andrew Eldritch and produced by Jim Steinman. Eldritch's lyrics concern his previous band members leaving the Sisters of Mercy to form the Mission. The latter's lead singer, Wayne Hussey, was once a guitarist for the Sisters of Mercy.
Debuting in runners up spot in The Boss' emotional USA #5, UK #20, Australia #17, Canada #9 lead single to his Tunnel Of Love album. This Roy Orbison sounding track analogies to Springsteen's personal life at the time: he had recently married then-model and actress Julianne Phillips, and the two would divorce in 1988.
The debut single from self-titled 1987 debut album by Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, formerly of Prince's band, The Revolution, was co-written & co-produced by fellow former The Revolution band mate Bobby Z. This USA #56, UK #66 & top 20 throughout Europe hit was written about being dismissed by Prince in October 1986.

My highest new entry is Vince Clarke & Andy Bell's title track to their second album produced by Flood. The lyrics on this UK #6 hit touch on social issues, rare for the duo, and centre on the lament of "working men", whose bright futures and job securities are left shattered in the modern world of greedy corporations and technology.
My featured faller is the Athens, Georgia alternative rock band's USA #69, Australia #4, & UK #39 (in 1991) which first appeared on their 1987 album Document. In 1996 R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck agreed that "End of the World" was in the tradition of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues".
