A new year sees my featured faller which failed to chart in the UK despite Radio 1 DJ Gary Davies making it is "Bit In The Middle: Record of The Week". This power ballad did reach Sweden #4 for the Swedish duo though. Maybe one day it will turn up in some movie and become a global smash hit ....
My highest new entry comes from the UK #3 by the dance group consisting of musicians Mark Gamble, Cassius Campbell and record producers Mark Brydon; Robert Gordon, and vocalist Ruth Joy. Mark Brydon would later enjoy greater success as part of Moloko.

Debuting at the top of my Retro Rewind Chart are the Australian pop rockers with the taut funk rock sounding lead single from their 6th studio album Kick, produced by Chris Thomas. It peaked at Australia #3, Canada #2, USA #1 & (ahem) UK #58 (but would fair much better via its Ben Liebrand remix at UK #2 later this year), in part thanks to its memorable Richard Lowenstein directed video.
My featured faller comes from the UK #41 & Australia #39 synthpop ballad written by Annie & Dave taken from their criminally underrated Savage album.

My highest new entry is the ninth track on the Irish rock quartet's 1987 album The Joshua Tree. It was released as the fourth single from the album in New Zealand and Australia peaking at #1 & #2 respectively. The track was written in memory of Greg Carroll, a Māori man the band first met in Auckland during the Unforgettable Fire Tour in 1984. He became very close friends with lead singer Bono and later served as a roadie for the group. Carroll was killed in July 1986 in a motorcycle accident in Dublin. Following the tangi funeral in New Zealand, Bono wrote the lyrics to "One Tree Hill" in Carroll's memory. The lyrics reflect Bono's thoughts at the tangi and during his first night in New Zealand when Carroll took him up Auckland's One Tree Hill.
The Liverpool band's cover of The Doors standard from the Lost Boys film soundtrack stalled at UK #29. It featured the Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek.

Whilst this was never (at the time released as a physical single) the Boston, Massachusetts proto-grunge pioneers song from their debut album Surfer Rosa was released to alternative rock radio as a (debut) promo single. Where late night Radio 1 certainly embraced it instantly, as it was after all over three years ahead of the single by that band from Seattle, Washington. After being featured in the 1999 film Fight Club, the song gained an even wider audience and became iconic.
My featured faller is the UK #3 first single from the English Heavy Metal band's seventh studio album, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Its video was set at Tintern Abbey and Chislehurst Caves, and features Monty Python’s Graham Chapman; this would be one of his last appearances on television before his death in October 1989 of cancer.

The Belfast formed alternative rock band top my Retro Rewind Chart with the song about "The Troubles" written by guitarist Pat Gribben which peaked at only UK #20 (and Ireland #8, USA #95, & Australia #45), despite being the most played track on Radio 1 in 1988. Sadly they are most famous for being the first act managed by pop Svengali Simon Fuller.
My highest new entry is the US alternative rockers UK #50 rock song from their Document album.
My featured faller sees the Jim & William Reid discover a drum machine on this UK #30 Duane Eddy meets The Velvet Underground type alternative rock track.
