It was the 88th-minute winner against Bishop's Stortford. He also scored a penalty in the shoot-out win Looks like he's been around the houses since, playing for Maidstone, Margate ( for a rumoured £800/week!), Hastings (again), and Crowborough since 2013, according to a quick google search. So, how are the qualifying rounds shaping up this season?. Been some interesting results. Good that BBC have been televising a game from each round so far. Not sure who the lowest ranked club left in but Newcastle Benfield (also mentioned in the Fake FA Cup thread) can't be far off. Meanwhile, the 1st round of the FA Vase was drawn on Monday and my team Marske United have an interesting away day at AFC Darwen, the successor club to the one that played in the Football League in the 19th century and set a new English record for consecutive top flight defeats. Just need to make sure I get the day off work...

Just need to make sure I get the day off work... I was looking at the Northern League Division One fixtures and I see Marske are playing my local team, Washington, on Saturday October 14. It's a bit far for me to travel all the way to Marske but I might go to the corresponding home fixture which is on Saturday 3 March next year. The last few seasons we've been playing all our home fixtures at Nissan. It's a decent ground but it's sad that we are having to play our home games there as our usual ground at Albany Park is at the bottom of my estate and it was ever so handy for just popping across to watch a match as it is literally a minute's walk. Unfortunately the pitch was unplayable for a couple of years due to snow and then flooding and just when we got that sorted out some idiots set fire to the changing room portacabins on two occasions so the ground is now just used for training practice. That led to a drop off in people using the club house facilities and the club house itself has now closed. Again, that used to be handy for popping over for a quick pint.

It's a nice set up at Nissan with a good clubhouse but it is very much out of the way and I know a few Marske fans who've taken the wrong turn-off on the A19 and ended up driving around the factory!

It's a nice set up at Nissan with a good clubhouse but it is very much out of the way and I know a few Marske fans who've taken the wrong turn-off on the A19 and ended up driving around the factory! I've never been to Nissan's sports ground, I've just heard good things about it, but I'm assuming it's next to the factory? If so, it'll be even more of a nightmare to get to now as there's a new road that's opened next to Nissan to take the increased traffic from all the factories that have opened in the area so if the Marske fans end up on that new road they'll end up bypassing Nissan and the football ground and will end up in Washington itself! Nissan's ground supposedly holds 1,000 supporters which is a bit too big for Washington FC as their own ground only held about 50 people seated with everyone else having to stand alongside the pitch. I think we once had close to 2,000 supporters there for one match, about a decade and a half ago when there was some national charity event on for some supporters club who were visiting as many grounds as they could in the various football leagues. But normally we would only have had an attendance of about 100 to 150. A few years back Sunderland Ladies played at Albany Park for a season while their own ground was being renovated. I went to one match, where they played Chelsea Ladies but I don't even think there was 50 spectators. Like their male counterparts are doing at the moment, Sunderland were well beaten!

The groups for the UEFA Nations League have been announced
League A
Germany Portugal Belgium Spain France ENGLAND Switzerland Italy Poland Iceland Croatia Netherlands
League B
Austria WALES Russia Slovakia Sweden Ukraine Ireland Bosnia-Herzegovnia NORTHERN IRELAND Denmark Czech Republic Turkey
League C
Hungary Romania SCOTLAND Slovenia Greece Serbia Albania Norway Montenegro Israel Bulgaria Finland Cyprus Estonia Lithuania
League D
Azerbaijan FYRO Macedonia Belarus Georgia Armenia Latvia Faroe Islands Luxembourg Kazakhstan Moldova Liechtenstein Malta Andorra Kosovo San Marino Gibraltar
Each of the leagues will be split into four groups with the winners going into a knock-out tournament to decide the ultimate winner. If I have interpreted it correctly, the four bottom-placed teams will all be relegated with the four group winners replacing them.

That's correct, but more importantly, one team from each league will be guaranteed a place at Euro 2020. This will be the highest-placed team from each league that doesn't finish in a qualifying position in the main Euro 2020 qualifying tournament.

This will be the highest-placed team from each league that doesn't finish in a qualifying position in the main Euro 2020 qualifying tournament. Not quite. Each league has four groups. The highest placed team in each group who does not qualify for Euro 2020 will get into a play-off competition. If there's a group where all the teams qualify, then the highest placed team from that league who doesn't yet have a play-off place will get one. If there still aren't enough teams to fill the four spots, then the highest placed team from a lower league will be in luck. In all, sixteen teams will make the play-offs, which will be semi-finals and final played in March 2020. Example in the next post...

Assuming same qualifiers as 2016, minus playoff winners (displayed stuck through below)
League D
Azerbaijan, Macedonia, Belarus, Georgia in the play-offs
League C
Hungary, Greece, Montenegro, Cyprus --> Hungary in play-offs
Romania, Serbia, Israel, Estonia --> Serbia in play-offs SCOTLAND, Albania, Bulgaria, Lithuania --> Scotland in play-offs Slovenia, Norway, Finland --> Slovenia in play-offs
League B
Austria, sweden, n ireland --> sweden
WALES, ukraine, denmark --> ukraine
Russia, ireland, czech --> ireland
Slovakia, bosnia, turkey --> bosnia in play-offs
League A
Only the Netherlands failed to qualify. They could be joined by Denmark, Norway and Greece.

I had a feeling my explanation was way more simple than I remember when I first read about it.
However, the part about one guaranteed qualifier from League D remains true.

It's not a surprise but Ronald Koeman has been sacked by Everton. After the woeful performance yesterday it was just a matter of time. Next up may be Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool as they too played dreadfully. Some of the Liverpool fans are wanting Rafa to return. Hopefully that won't happen!

I have had a look but I do not like the format.
We are in League A but we will only play against 2 of the other teams in that league, unless we win our group.
There are 6 match days but we only play on 4 of them as we only play 4 games. Wouldn't it have been better to at least have 16 teams in the top division if they insist on this format, and then you'd play in all 6 match days, and only 1 in 4 going down?
I would still go for a "Swiss" format within the group so you play against 6 different teams.
I dislike the fact it then goes into a knockout. I know the "champions league" does that but I like a league to be a league. A final between the top 2 would be a good thing but no penalties - the team that finished lower in the Swiss would have to win.
I'd have this replace the European Championship and World Cup qualifiers altogether, make this tournament longer, and use it as qualification. A number of teams from the lower division would have the right to play off for qualification places so any team could qualify regardless of what division they start in.

If the divisions were made up in the same way then using it as the WC and EC qualifiers would be a nonsense.

It's not a surprise but Ronald Koeman has been sacked by Everton. There will be many Southampton fans celebrating this news. We wanted him to stay, but he wanted glory and the deep pockets of Everton's new owners to buy the glory for him. What he didn't realise was that he wasn't capable of doing the job that was expected of him.

If the divisions were made up in the same way then using it as the WC and EC qualifiers would be a nonsense. - Complete round robin. - Top few teams in the top division automatically qualify for WC or EC - Lower teams get into play-offs with teams from other divisions. So playoffs could be 1 team from Group D, 2 from Group C, 3 from Group B and 2 from Group A that didn't qualify by position, playing for the last position, or playing for two positions if they don't use a single-elimination knockout format. (Double-elimination knockout could be used). Let's see how double elimination knockout works. A beats B C beats D E beats F G beats H next round: A beats C E beats G B beats D (D eliminated) F beats H (H eliminated) next round: A beats E. (A qualifies as unbeaten at this stage) B beats C (C eliminated) F beats G (G eliminated). At this point we have 3 remaining of once-defeated teams so they need a 3-group playoff. It might work better when you don't start with 8.

If you start with 16, double-elimination works very well.
After 4 rounds, one has won all their matches and 4 remain that have won one and lost one.
- After round 1 you have 8 1-0, 8 0-1 - After round 2 you have 4 2-0, 4+4 1-1 (=8) and 4 0-2 (eliminated) - After round 3 you have 2 3-0, 2+4 2-1 (=6) and 4 more eliminated - After round 4 you have one 4-0 (qualified) plus the loser of that "final" and 3 winners making 4. Then it's straight knockout between the 4 remaining.
So there could be a number of qualifiers by league place, then 2 qualifiers through a double-elimination knockout of 16 teams drawing from a few positions from all the divisions.

I think its harsh, they have played Man U, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs, 5 teams that finished above them last season even with Lukaku, they have much more money, better squads and are simply better than them even WITH Lukaku
Out of the winnable games they have only played Stoke, Bournemouth, Brighton and Burnley and won 2, drew 1, lost 1 and beat a cchampionship team 3-0 in the cup
A new manager cant magic a 6'4 30 goal a season striker out of thin air and that's their problem, that and the players haven't gelled yet and brining in in a new regime will reset that back to square one
Meanwhile Bilic is getting beat 3-0 by newly promoted teams and has been in this kind of form for 18 month and keeps his job, wish their owners had a bit of bottle
