Herne Bay 3-1 Walton Casuals
I'll admit it wasn't my idea to go but i'm glad I did! Good weather too, it reminded me of the round before the cup game I went to in 2011 there on the same weekend as this and the weather was similarly nice and I thought it seemed a good idea to go and after not going in the end then regretted it afterwards when discovered it was a good game. I doubt that game was as good as this one was though, easily the best of the 3 HB games I've seen over the years.
Both teams tried to play passing football (which I expected from Herne Bay given Embery's comments in the local paper this week) but Herne Bay played an attacking game which ultimately may have made the difference in the end, more on that in a bit. Walton Cas were slightly the better side early on with better passing, but then Herne Bay took the lead with a good move, the right winger running through the middle and playing in the striker who was in a surprising amount of space and finished well. HB maybe slightly fortunate to be ahead at HT, Walton Cas had squandered good chances, HB hadn't had many. 2nd half was a different story though as HB dominated for the majority of the half. The scorer of the goal miskicked in front of goal when it looked like it was going to be 2-0 (he was later given MOTM despite coming off injured before the end). Then Walton Cas equalised with a pen, didn't see why it was given as thinking there was a break in play I went to put my drink in the bin and missed it It all seemed to happen very quickly. It didn't affect HB as they then took the lead and even at 2-1 up kept pushing forward for a 3rd which arrived in the last minute.
Comedy moment was the Walton corner taker deciding to take a corner and just run with it with none of his teammates anywhere near him. I'm still baffled about what he was thinking, especially when IIRC it was their captain and the oldest player on the pitch! He had no excuse, and the ref duly gave a free-kick to Herne Bay.
Overall, great win, Embery also said that being a young team of mainly U21s (though I did notice some older ones in there too) they will be inconsistent, but on this evidence it's going to be an interesting season.

Great win again for Herne Bay, 5-2 at Horsham with 5 different scorers! Sounds similar to the previous round Herne Bay upping the tempo 2nd half after a close 1st half, it was 1-1 at half-time! The programme for that previous game had a nice feature on their FA Cup history over the last 25 years and this is only the 4th time they've reached the 3rd qualifying round in that time! I suspect they'll draw a higher division team this time so hopefully a home draw. I think the next round falls on the weekend that Reading are the evening game on Sky so might be tempted to go again.

Yeah a team of ex-Stags playing a team of ex-Stags managed by an ex-Stag, should be a big draw for the local populace. Shame it clashes with the County match at the moment, they must move it to the sunday?

Was nowhere near first choice as several clubs turned them down.
BBC apparently chose Guiseley v Shildon but Guiseley backed out when they realised kickoff would have to be brought forward.

Stags get Shaw Lane Association away in the 1st round, why do I feel potential banana skin, rather than, we can whallop them?

Maidenhead are away to Coventry, so it's the old branch of my family vs the new branch!
My Dad's generation and below on that side all support(ed) Coventry, but my Grandad was a Villa fan!
