I never wanted to sound like my parents, but I was listening to a playlist of the charts the other day and was feeling nostalgic for the days of the 80s and 90s when the top 10 could consist of a combination of rock, dance, indie, pop, power ballads and even the odd easy listening classic. Now it just (and I hate to say it) all sounds the same!
So, does anybody else think that a new revolution (in the same way that we had Rock & Roll, Merseybeat, Glam Rock, Punk, House, Madchester, Grunge, Britpop, Hip-Hop etc.) is long overdue, and if we will ever see the like again?

I was thinking this the other day, we are in quite a scary time again and the last two times we were worried about WW3 we had The Swingin 60s and the New Romantic/nu-wave explosion so maybe that will help spur this on but the main problem is everything is controlled by the same record companies with very few exceptions indie labels cant penetrate the mainstream anymore.
But the thing is though I have no difficulty finding varied and exciting music each week, my chart is full of different genres yes mostly rock but indie, hiphop, house, metal, pop, electronic, drum n bass, folk, retro acts, brand new acts, ballads etc etc
You need to forget about the charts yes you can see whats there but its only 1% of the music out there each week. over 10000 new tracks get added to Spotify each week.

We are long overdue but I don't think it will happen, the monopoly and money pumped in at the top to keep bland artists churning out the same old stuff is the strongest it has ever been, they have a vested interest in keeping it this way and money spent pushing artists = sales
If you like a genre like Rock/Indie/Alternative there is so much good stuff under the surface that never gets any exposure, it is there but there isn't a platform for it to do well or demand by the public for it to break through, if it wasn't for Spotify I don't know what I would do, that's where I find 80% of the new music I like
People also are less adventurous these days, too scared of breaking social convention? maybe social media is to blame, its hard to be unique if the eyes of the world are judging you. People don't seek the new exciting things, they all drink the same coffee from the same coffee chain, they all have the same 2 phones from the same two manufacturers, traditional British pubs are being replaced by chain pubs that all look the same, even football clubs are turning into bland money making machines milking the masses
Not to mention since the 70's and 80's clubs these bands used to play have been turned into boutique furniture stores or knocked down completely, we are in an age of being spoon fed the stuff we "should like" and I'm afraid as humans we have become lazy and lap it up in almost every aspect of life, some might say we are closer to zombies now

I think the new revolution has happened. Its called URBAN MUSIC.
I would love it to go back to how it was then in the 80s and 90s.
We dont even get any novelty songs anymore unless they are really pushed by facebook campaigns at xmas time

How good or bad Spotify for discovering new or good old forgotten music, if I'm not a fan of Alternative/Indie genre ?

How good or bad Spotify for discovering new or good old forgotten music, if I'm not a fan of Alternative/Indie genre ? Well it has about 20 million tracks so it should be pretty good

If anything it would be easier as indie alternative is a 1% niche on spotify
