I know this is the rock forum, but I was thinking this could work with other types of music too, ie dance, soul, female singers, 80s music,....

Holy moly, after my initial look over the songs in this round it's looking like this may be my new toughest to list round. This may take some time and quite a few listens through

Have to say this has been a great contest Razzle Dazzle great concept, plenty of scope for future editions. Good luck to whoever wins and hard luck to the runner-up as it looks to close to call at the moment. Thanks. It's been pretty fun to run too. As for future editions there is plenty of room to do a Dance Idol or an 80s edition or Pop idol or even a 2nd Rock Idol with different categories, if I was to run a 2nd one i'd certainly take on board some of the suggestions to have a few heavier genre rounds to replace Glam and Britpop which would only add to the variety, I'd also have another round focusing on a specific artist like I did with REM. We also didn't have a 70s or 90s round so that would be interesting

Yeh I can see it now Dance - David Bowie - Let's Dance or Dead Man Walking 80s - David Bowie - China Girl Soul - David Bowie - Soul Love Female singers - Danielle Monae - Heroes The problem is they are the popular choices both by the entrants (6 of the 13 entered a Bowie song for example) but also most of the voters ranked them highly too as their favourite. And this kind of thing can only be run with the support of posters so it can't get too niche or people wouldn't enter because they wouldn't like their own songs nevermind ones they were voting on and rock rock is niche here, that's why them entries never get over 30 points in HRI. Even Britpop and Indie pop are niche here as Haven Factor has shown. That is too rock for most

The sound of my uni days Another tough round with a couple of cases of 'right' band, wrong song'. I surprised myself with where the 15 points ended up going.

What would you have entered in this round if you were playing? Songs released 2000-2017

What would you have entered in this round if you were playing? Songs released 2000-2017 Good question Even just off the top of my head without looking deeper my shortlist isn't really that short: The Strokes - Last Nite; Bloc Party - Banquet; Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps; The Verve - Sit And Wonder; Klaxons - Two Receivers; The Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So; Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out; Von Bondies - C'mon C'mon; Eels - Souljacker Part 1; Something from the Maccabees' Given To The Wild Album; and that's not even including The Vines, Radiohead or Muse, which would be separate shortlists on their own

And now after having just a quick look at my Last.fm profile I realise I could add something from Los Campesinos, Alt-J, Biffy Clyro, The Futureheads, Sigur Ros, The Cooper Temple Clause, Foals, Les Savy Fav, and many more to that list. Probably best I didn't have to make a choice.
I remember when I used to do Hidden Indie Treasure entries and I had a saved list that was packed with possible song entries and grew all the time. Took me an absolute age to actually decide which one to finally submit

I would have entered something by the Killers (probably When We Were Young) if I hadn't thought that this round would already be flooded with their songs!

I've just voted, as I may not be able to tomorrow. There are 5 tracks I rate as 10.0 out of 10.0, which says a lot.

I think we sometimes forget that the 00s had great music in it, and think of rock music dying after britpop when it didn't.
It was only sometime around 2009 that rock music started disappearing from the charts.

The 00s was a great time for indie music, with the like of the Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs et al getting regular playtime even in the places where there'd previously only played pop music

It sounds like a golden age now though!
