^ Certainly better than any song done by that paedophile self proclaimed King Of Pop from Gary, Indiana ever managed.

I really didn't want Common People to win.

So, when it comes to Rock music, we have conclusive proof that Haven likes Britpop more than anything else. Superbly run contest Razzle Dazzle. Terrific from concept, through the rounds, and into the CofC stage. Thank you very much. Any thoughts on whether you'll follow this up, what with, and when ?

Oh well, what better way to round off a thoroughly naff performance in this contest from yours truly?

Oh well, what better way to round off a thoroughly naff performance in this contest from yours truly? Ha I know. You were comfortable in 12th for a while and could've even finished 9th with the last set of votes but dropped to 15th.

Terrific from concept, through the rounds, and into the CofC stage. Thank you very much. Any thoughts on whether you'll follow this up, what with, and when ? I always got the impression Britpop was big here. The charts were pretty great in the mid 90s and the majority of us like the pop rock crossover. Age wise we are getting on a bit too so music from 20 year ago was always going to have a nostalgic feel I don't want to promise anything but I'm sure there will be another HRI but it won't be until next year. I'd be delighted if someone else decided to run their own version using the same format be it Dance, Pop or even Rock Idol 2. If in 6 months time nobody wants to give it a shot I will see If I can think of a slightly tweaked/improved HRI 2 involving some new exciting categories designed to explore areas we didn't touch this time. The biggest problem was duplicate song entries which then meant chasing people up to get alternatives and the fact whoever gets first pick gets a bigger advantage. Individual interpretation of the rules were a problem for some but I didn't want to tell people my interpretation of rock is more valid than there's. I wanted this to be a themed none pop contest rather than an exclusive heavy rock contest but the name Haven Rock Idol but fully inclusive of Indie/Alternative/Britpop wasn't very catchy. I was always aware if it got to niche there would be maybe only 3 people really interested in Thorney, Roo and Dan. It was the mix of genres that got the interest to make this happen. I had no idea what people would enter when I made the categories so I put in an Indie Pop round, Britpop round and several genre unspecific rounds thinking we would be too rock heavy and they would be the poppy rounds to add diversity. Now I know the opposite and maybe a few specific rock rounds would actually add to the diversity.

I would love a Pop Idol version of this, and I do have a lot of free time, so I might see if anyone else takes the mantle and if not conjure something up on that front. Let's face it, I'm not likely to host a contest through winning any time soon Seriously though, this was a brilliant contest and honestly if someone decides to do a round 2 of it, there's little I'd change. You did a really brilliant job running it Daz, it's been loads of fun despite my take on the contest being somewhat different to everyone else's. I've learned from that though. As an aside, as we went along I kept track of who exactly I was giving my points to each round - and my winner was actually you Daz, you just beat Milliways 121 points to 116. Everyone else was at least 20 points behind the pair of you.

I came up with an interesting idea though.
If two people submit the same song, that song cannot be used by either and they must submit a different choice. If their second choice was used as someone's first choice, the person who had it as their first choice keeps it and they must find a third option.
That is to avert the situation of simply being a race to pick the "popular" song, although it could lead to bluff and double-bluff as people avoid putting in the obvious song through fear of a clash, only to let one person use it unchallenged.
"The majority here like pop-rock crossover..." that appears only when it comes to popular oldies music. When it comes to modern music, that is pretty much what I chart but it doesn't seem that popular with others.

Atleast I won something then I discovered some good songs and rediscovered others I hadn't listened to for years too which was part of the fun, I know mine was Andy without even adding them up because I think I gave him maximum points 5 times

If I'd just submitted 9 seconds earlier I'd have had the top 2 champion of champions songs... and would also have finished 3rd overall.
I did think Razzle Dazzle was aiming at more alternative/indie/pop-rock than actual "rock" rock or I'd have submitted more rock-orientated songs to some of the rounds. Only really in the 60s round when I entered the Who did I specifically pick out something more "rock".
Some kind of music poll on here based on the music of the decade 2000-2009 would be interesting as it appears to be the "forgotten" decade for rock by many of us. A lot of good rock and indie music released in that decade, much of it reaching the charts and some even getting to #1 but the emergence of manufactured boy-band acts like Westlife ruling the charts in the early part of that decade and urban acts like Usher doing so later seemed to make us think rock had been left behind.

I knew from Dazs preview post that it would be open to indie and pop/rock but it is rare that you get a chance to enter proper rock songs in a Haven competition so I just went for it, I knew I wouldn't win didnt care I just wanted to give a voice for the more Kerrang side of rock.
I could have gone just as obvious as many posters entering stuff like 'Don't Stop Believin', 'Mr Brightside' or 'Use Somebody' but nah I wanted to do something different. If we do this again I will maybe lean a little more commercial but I will still try and keep it that way.
As for rock being left behind in the 00s complete rubbish, although you wouldn't think it by this competition we had Nu-Metal,Emo and the New York Scene as well as the My Space bands, the new indie rock revival. We had nu-metal number ones from Limp Bizkit,The Rasmus and Evanascence to name just three!

As a big fan of pop music I want to say that 2010s decade looks like the death of pure pop. At least I don't see any new "rescuers of genre" and young pop stars with big potential. Based on last single even Taylor Swift is a victim of awful music trends. Even Lithuanian pop stars want to be copycats of mainstream singers now.

Thats so true. I love cheesy bubblegum pop but gone are the days of anything unique in the chart. It's odd because pop always sells well so when pure pop dries up what chance does more obscure genres have

Nobody has big potential as there is only 3-4 entries each week now, like all genres if you want to find something interesting you need to look beyond the stale top 40

always had mixed feeling about Common people, love the lyrics, think they're total genious, the storytelling is genius, and that's the best think about the song, but on the other hand, the melody is meh, there is just the 1 chord repeated 500 times, so lyrically a 10, musically a 0 and agree it's also 0 rock
