HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 6th OCTOBER 1985

It’s another big week for Midge Ure as If I Was earns a third week at number one. Still appearing on every individual chart but starting to dip on a few so his days at the top may be numbered.




The biggest challenge for next week’s number one comes from A-Ha who climb to number two. Steadily closing the gap behind Midge Ure, they still have work to do to overthrow him.


A-Ha’s move up the chart dislodges The Cure, who drop to number three and John Parr who slides a place, while Red Box spend a sixth week in the Top Ten and stuck at their peak of number five.


Simple Minds follow up their April chart-topper Don’t You (Forget About Me) and make an impressive debut at number six with Alive And Kicking.


Jennifer Rush finally breaks into the Top Ten on her thirteenth week on the chart with The Power Of Love as it moves up to number seven.


The Cult are this week’s biggest climb, up 20 places with Rain, which lands at number 17.

I could have posted the original very 1980s, very pretentious artpop video, but decided to post this legendary live performance from the 2012 Queen's Jubilee Concert, where she was backstage watching the previous act with her hula hoop which she used as a pre performance relaxation/warm up, but she was so appalled by "The Nation's Favourite" cat-wailing her way (with a helpless Gary Barlow) murdering Lady Antebellum's Need You Now www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yC1GktayPc , that she decided to show that performance up in the best way possible (hence the large amount of thumb downs on youtube from fans of the talentless "Biffy" Tweedy).

It's a first week on top for Midge Ure, rather appropriately cos I saw him perform this wonderful song last night as I write (14th Oct 2017) heading a triple bill of fab Clare Crogan's Altered Images, still in fine voice, and ditto The Christians smooth rocksoul. Great to hear them all with more hits than you think you know!

Jennifer Rush powers into the 10, The Smiths make a thorny dash into the 20, and Level 42 have something about going top 40. Highest new entry is the brilliant Trevor Horn-produced Grace Jones Slave To The Rhythm, at 44, The Cult follow-up with Rain, Sade keeps the jazzsoul coming, Prince has another psychedelic-soul single off Around The World In A Day, and a classic Simple Minds movie song pops in. One to have a Breakfast Club to.

Woodpeckers From Space? No, I don't remember it either, but I had fond movies of being in the Micky Mouse club in Singapore (Woody Woodpecker shorts on film shown to RAF kids in Siglap, presumably unable to finance Disney shorts). Certainly no other excuse for charting it. One place higher than Erasure's debut of a flop single first time round, the former Depeche Mode Vince is also lower than his ex-bandmates. Bobby Womack follows his brother and sister-in-law into my charts, Kaja have dropped the googooo - they needent have bothered - The Alarm are strong at 75, and The Jesus And Mary Chain are just like honey at 74. Sweet.

Not just "some Americans", in never every poll and every critic list, it is the top one. It was even used in the post apocalyptic TV show Revolution when an evil AI decided it would appreciate Human music and all it woulD play was 'We Built this City' and the human characters constantly groaned and told it it was the worst example of human music ever made.

But like you I love it and I think you are right the US don't know what a bad number one is but 80s US number ones alone surely 'Ebony And Ivory' for one is worse

What will be interesting is how it will have done when the yearly charts come around.

This has also happened with various hits that either bubbled a few weeks before charting as some enter them when they hit the top 75 and others when they hit the top 40, and also a few songs that were hits in the USA, especially big ones, before they were here, e.g. Huey Lewis's "The Power Of Love", also "St Elmo's Fire" and coming up "Broken Wings" will be entering my chart in a couple of weeks time but won't hit the UK chart until January, and that would be split over two year-end charts.
