Record charts in the UK began in 1952, when Percy Dickins of the New Musical Express (NME) gathered a pool of 52 stores willing to report sales figures. For the first British chart Dickins telephoned approximately 20 shops, asking for a list the 10 best-selling songs. These results were then aggregated into a Top 12 chart published in NME on 14 November 1952, with Al Martino's "Here in My Heart" awarded the number-one position.
According to the Official Charts Company's statistics, already more than 1,300 singles have topped the UK singles chart.
In late 2012 "Bohemian Rapsody" was named "Nations Favourite # 1 Single" . Elton John with "Candle In The Wind" sold 4.9 million copies in the UK, overtaking the 13-year-old record held by Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?". It has been certified as the best-selling single of all time in the UK. Frankie Laine spent 18 weeks at # 1 with "I Believe" in 1953.
Which song will be my favourite UK # 1 single ?

So far, Berlin, Blondie, Madonna, Dusty and Maria McKee would all stand a good chance of being in my top 100.

With only a top 100 it's hard to say exactly but of the above tracks probably only the two Blondie tracks, Belinda Carlisle and Ace Of Base would have a chance of making my list.
I do also like Berlin, Tiffany, Elton & Kiki.

Suprisingly, it wasn't hard to compile this chart.
My pre-list had only some additional songs over one hundred ("One Day At A Time", "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep", "Perfect Moment" and two Madonna's singles).
Every Blondie's # 1 hit was included in top 100.

I didn't get to predict but I think your number one may come from 1979 and be one of Blondie's #1s from that year.
There were no female vocal UK #1s in 1963 at all, and "Come Outside" was the only UK #1 in 1962 to feature a female vocalist but it was mostly Mike Sarne's #1.
Brenda Lee never had a UK #1 single.
Connie Francis had two, both in the 1950s. I wonder if they will appear on your list. Neil Sedaka co-wrote Stupid Cupid with Howard Greenfield.
Helen Shapiro is the youngest singer to reach #1 in my chart. Brenda Lee was even younger than that when she recorded the song that got to #1 in my chart for her. Lynette Ann Ripley (Twinkle) is the youngest artist to reach NM #1 with their own composition. Johnny Crawford is the youngest male singer to reach NM #1. I'm not sure who is the youngest male to get to #1 with his own composition. (It is the age when it gets to #1 that counts, not when they wrote or recorded it).

I don't like that one, and I don't like Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman's version either. Both of them got to #1 in my chart in 1966, Nancy with "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'", Frank with "That's Life" (not Strangers in the Night). Nancy had several hit duets with Lee Hazlewood and also a solo hit with "You Only Live Twice" (which also has an association with a Robbie Williams hit as Millennium samples it)

Of course we will see "These Boots" and Robbie & Nicole duet here sooner or later.

I'm not keen on Girls Aloud's version of 'I'll Stand By You'. I think it lacks the raw emotion and tenderness of Chrissie Hynde's original.

"See The Day" always was my favourite cover version from Girls Aloud. Wonderful Christmas hit.
