I disagree with you that "The Message" was the best rap single of the first half of the 1980s. However I will agree with you that Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel were behind the one that was.. Its a close call 'White Lines' is brilliant as well

29 Only Time Will Tell – Asia
In this batch we will have two entries for this brilliant Prog AOR band. This was the 2nd single taken from their biggest hit album 'Asia'. The supergroup had a number one album in the US and reached #11 in the UK. Another of the few early 80s albums I own on vinyl. The single reached #17 in the US but only #54 here.

28 Mad World – Tears For Fears
This song has been a bit overplayed in the last few years with its many cover versions so it is great to go back to the original. This version reached #3 in the UK and was a big seller finishing #12 for the year.

27 State of Independence – Donna Summer
We just had some members of YES in Asia and here is a song written by Jon Anderson of YES. I would say this is probably my favourite Donna Summer song. This version reached #14 in the UK and #41 in the US.

26 Heat Of The Moment – Asia
Yes we have more from Asia already, although this isn't their biggest hit in the UK, I would say this is their most famous song as it always crops up on those rock compilations albums. This song reached #4 in the US and again they miss over here only peaking #46.

25 Abracadabra - Steve Miller Band
This was one of my favourites at the time such a catchy rock song. Its commercial appeal made it a worldwide hit reaching number one in many countries and #2 in the UK.

24 Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
Now we have a contender for my favourite Xmas song of all time. It is the only one I never get sick of and probably play more than any other, not really surprising as they basically sound like The Go Gos. It really deserved to be a huge hit but was a cult track until 'The Best Xmas Album World... Ever' made it known to the masses. It reached #45 at the time but regularly returns to the top 200 at Xmas time.

23 Do You Believe In Love - Huey Lewis & The News
Now we have the first appearance for Huey Lewis & The News in the 80s we will see them many many times. This ELO type track was their breakthrough hit reaching #7 in the US, its taken from their 2nd album 'Picture This'

22 Spirits In The Material World - The Police
The only appearance for The Police in 1982 and another of their best this ska/rock track reached #12 in the UK and #11 in US. I think the synths are the best thing about it.

21 Poison Arrow – ABC
ABC have one more to come not sure if I have them in the right order, this was definitely my favourite one at the time, 'Look Of Love' is a bit overplayed but anyway they are both brilliant. It reached #6 in the UK and #25 In the US.

I was reading the posts above debating about whether White Lines or The Message is the best rap record from the early 80s, and wondering how much credibility I would lose if I mentioned Christmas Wrapping, then I scrolled down and lo and behold, there it was!
I genuinely thought that when the download era was upon us Christmas Wrapping would be one of the tracks which became a huge success, I imagined it would be at the level of success All I Want For Christmas Is You has inexplicably achieved. It's hard to understand why that didn't happen, such a wonderful record. I guess not having a proper video didn't help.

In my chart State OF Independence got to #1, knocking Mad World off the top.
I don't consider Christmas Wrapping as a rap track (unlike Kurtis Blow's "Christmas Rappin' which definitely was, but is completely different).
In 1970 the Jaggerz reached #2 in the USA with a track called "The Rapper". It is on my current 1970 playlist. It isn't rap, and I'm not sure we know exactly what "rapping" was that the rapper did, and whether it was rapping as we know it now.
Back to 1982 and Huey Lewis & The News - that song will be in the UK top 10 soon in retro era but it isn't just an "ELO type track" but clearly rips off "Sweet Talkin' Woman". It was actually written by Robert "Mutt" Lange, who would also co-write the song that spent the most consecutive weeks at #1, as well as marrying a different Canadian at one point and writing songs for her.

Yeh like Neil I never really thought of it that way guess it is a rap record clue is in the title just like Blondie - Rapture.

My Personal Chart has just got to what I regard as the best rap track of the early 1980s. I agree about The Waitresses, I guess no girl band will cover it after the Spice Girls ill advised attempt at the track www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIZ14B65u6k. PS. I'm enjoying Thorney's countdowns, but have not really commented as I'm trying to finish my 1983 retro weekly charts before Christmas.

Thanks for the one or two comments you all manage to give, all that matters to me is that I am not typing this all for myself and others find it interesting, I know other peoples personal charts can be a bit like other people dreams at times. So onto the top 20, need to move on as 83-85 are already to go. 20 Hungry Like The Wolf - Duran DuranFor me now these next two years Duran Duran are one of the best bands on the planet but due to our sexist and macho ethos at school, boys cant admit to liking them otherwise it is presumed you are gay, ahh such times the 80s!! Ironically their biggest fan in our year who was a boy turned out to be gay so there we go lol. Didn't make all the bullying any easier so I wish now I just was who I wanted to be and f*ck any one else. So hard at 12 to do that though Anyway back to the music , think I have these Duran songs in wrong order but anyway top 20 is still brilliant. This reached #5 in the UK and #3 n the US.

19 Golden Brown – The StranglersOne of my favourite songs at the time and one of those videos that is stuck in your memory forever. So different from anything else they have done or anything else in the charts, it is just an unique song again I think this should be higher. That difference in sound made to so special that it reached #2 in the UK. One thing though MW radio made it hard to make out the lyrics and we all worried at the time about what a 'moncheeron' was???

18 867-5309 -Jenny – Tommy Tutone
Now here is a curveball. This is one of my favourite 80s songs that I never discovered until the 00s. It was another song that I found through Yahoo Dotmusic Radio. The first time I heard this song I fell in love with this Rolling Stones style power pop track. It has since turned up a few times in popular culture as it seems to be a bit of a roadmark song for US Generation Xer. I remember hearing it referenced on Parks & Recreation and I was like wow people still remember this. It reached #4 in the US.

17 More Than This – Roxy Music
While we talk about popular culture, my love for this song was boosted again but its brilliant use in Season 4 of The Americans when our stars realise they maybe need to stop what they are doing. But it has always been one of favourite songs, I love the 10,000 Maniacs cover almost as much as this, if you can find the version without beats on it on YouTube like wtf which you cant so vimeo.com/108524874This was Roxy Music last top 10 hit and reached #6 and just missed in the US at #102

16 Love Plus One – Haircut 100
Back to the pop hits with Haircut 100s finest moment and another LP I have on vinyl. Not much to say on this we all love it and it has an absolutely ridiculous video. It reached #3 in the UK and #37 in the US.

15 See You - Remastered – Depeche Mode
Highest appearance for Depeche Mode in 1982 and their first single without Vince Clarke although they are not moving far away from his sound quite yet, This was their biggest hit yet in the UK ranching #6 but their appeal still hasn't spread much beyond these shores.
