32 My Perfect Cousin - The Undertones
Another song I knew when I was 9 and I loved this because i actually had a cousin like that, he went onto be a speech writer for Tony Blair and many other things like that. I t was funny as Tony Blackburn woudl play this early in the morning and it was so different from the stuff you usually would hear on breakfast show radio. It reached #9 in March 1980.

31 Enola Gay – Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
Didn't we all want to make music like these guys, schools were giving on Casio keyboards and we thought we could make music like this with them and it was almost always terrible. This is their highest appearance in 1980 but we will see a lot of them over the next 6 years. This reached #8 in 1980 and it is arguably their finest moment but I think 2 other songs match it.

30 Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar
I was always aware of Pat Benatar in 1980 but I didn't become a fan until about 1984 and then I super fan when a friend gave me a copy of her greatest hits album. Thank you Catsy, A girl I worked with when i was 17 who was that cool chick who was a little bit out of the league of a slightly nerdy kid but we did have a couple of moments Best summer ever TM. Sorry cant talk about Pat Benatar without remembering her anyway. This song was top 10 hit in US but I remember it on Uk radio a lot. I have always loved female rock singers from Blondie through to bands like Paramore and Marmozets now, yes more than men generally.

29 One Step Beyond – Madness
Last appearance for Madness in 1980 and this is possibly my favourite Madness song overall. Again it probably more of a 1979 song but who cares. Actually it could be my favourite ska track!! Ok it is a cover but its just so good. It reached #7 in the UK.

28 Any Way You Want It – Journey
I always knew Journey for the power ballads but I didn't discover this song till very recently, I never knew it was Journey but I had heard it, so different from their future sound. I think it was a movie or a Tv show that came out in the last 5 years, I don't know what it was now. Anyway I love Journey, so should me. There will be more to come, a lot more to come. It reached #23 in 1980. Oh it might have been Chuck.

27 So Lonely – The Police
Unbelievably they still have three more to come but first they song that we just can't listen to without thinking of 'Sue Lawley'. It reached #6 on re-issue in 1980 although it came from their debut album.

26 Same Old Scene – Roxy Music
Now another song I rediscovered through a TV show, I heard this in 'Ashes To Ashes' and I was like wow what is this and as it played on, I remembered it, what a song! Another Hit Factor entry, I can't remember if they got to play this but it would probably have got 1st or 2nd from me if it was. Its that synth break from 2 mins in just wow.
It reached #12 in the UK.

25 Kiss On My List – Daryl Hall & John Oates
Hall & Oates are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, not that I am guilty but you know what I mean, another band that you will see a lot of over the next 5 years in my lists. This was a US number one and reached #33 in UK. Hall & Oates have always underachieved in Uk especially one song but we will have to wait a couple of years for that.

24 Too Much Too Young - The Specials
I said 'One Step Beyond' was best ska song and then we get this higher and just as good. BTW it is hard finding a version of this on Spotify that is the right temp they are always too slow. It should be like this. This reached #1 in the UK.

23 De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da – The Police
My two favourite bands in 1980 were The Police and Blondie so that's why you are seeing them quite a bit. I guess that fits my taste forever as I have always been transatlantic in taste. This reached #5 in UK and #10 in US.

22 Mirror In The Bathroom – The Beat
Wow more ska, think this is a little bit too high but nevermind as its brilliant anyway. This reached #4 in 1980.

21 Refugee – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Now this would have made my top 100 anyway but would it be this high up without his recent death, probably not. This is one of his best songs and we are likely to see him in most lists right through to 1989. This reached #15 in the US in 1980.
Top 20 coming soon..

20 Ashes To Ashes – David Bowie
Right into the top 20 with possibly my favourite David Bowie song. I will be very surprised if any of his other songs in the 80s finish in my top 30 of the year, possibly 'Let's Dance' but we will see. This was a UK number one and somehow missed the US top 100, which is just dumbfounding. At the time this was the most expensive pop video ever made.

19 Hungry Heart – Bruce Springsteen
Someone I would like see in a future Haven Factor is Bruce Springsteen, I don't think I could do him a justice hope we have a big fan among us. This is his first appearance but he will have many more to come. This was the lead single from his 5th album 'The River' . It reached #5 in the US and just #44 in the UK but it was played on the radio a lot.

18 Antmusic - Adam & The Ants
Now one for the 10 year old me, I think I played this song more than any other song on this list although my #4 came pretty close. I was absolutely addicted to this band. The song actually peaked in 1981 at #2 but as you have seen I am not being hard and fast with the year boundaries.

17 The Spirit Of Radio – Rush
I never knew this song at the time but this is one of those songs that just kept showing up on rock compilations like 'Hot City Nights', I loved that tape. I don't know much about them really although have listened to quite a lot of them over the last few weeks. Its just an awesome rock tune. I am really surprised to see this was actually a bigger hit in the Uk than US, it reached #13 here and #51 in US.

16 Echo Beach - Martha & The Muffins
Time for an other Rock Idol song, you will probably be surprised to know I never heard this in the 80s at all, if I did it never registered. My flat mate had it on 7" and he played it during our house parties and that's how I discovered it. Now as you can see it is one of my favourite songs. It reached #10 in the Uk. Just realised that's 2 Canadian bands in a row.

15 We Live For Love - Pat Benatar
Yes this is probably surprisingly high. This is higher than 'Best Shot' or 'Heartbreaker' as it has a more 80s sound, it is closer to how her future hits woudl sound and it just has that magic feel that special songs in my life have. If a song is special it gives me chills, if it is very special it makes me teary, I am not always sad music just does that to me sometimes. I know its weird. It reached #27 in the US. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONRoRW4nJAY

14 Another One Bites The Dust – Queen
As I advised earlier I swapped the Queen songs and I think I made the right decision. The disco stomp on this track is brilliant and that bass line. This was a US number one and reached #7 in UK.

13 Don't Stand So Close To Me - The Police
With only 12 more songs to go, I think people can start to guess what is too come. I will say that 6 of them you could guess the others maybe not but I will say The Police still have one more to come. I must admit I actually prefer the 86 version of this. This though was the lead single from 'Zenyatta Mondatta' and was a Uk number one and reached #10 in US.
