I forgot about "Call Me", that's why "Atomic" was # 1 in my prediction.
I don't want to spoil my weekly # 1s of 1980 from UK chart based list, but only some obvious hits were mentioned here.

Call Me was the lowest selling UK #1 of 1980, in a year that had a lot of them.
The biggest selling single of 1980 only sold about 800K compared to the many million sellers of 1984 however in overall sales 1980 was far bigger than 1984 and I think was just behind 1979 which was the biggest selling year of all time.
Call Me was however the #1 single of the year in the USA.
My own #1 single of the year was Ashes To Ashes, followed by All Out Of Love.

Honestly I wanted to see "Woman In Love" here. My favourite single of 1980 year is not a surprise for anybody and was named some times in the rest retro threads.

Shaddup You Face is for me not the worst top 5 hit of 1981. That honour goes to that awful "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine. Not sure how I'd place SYF against O Superman. At least it doesn't go on 8 minutes. Those first two didn't make my shortlist but 'O Superman' did its about #260.

ok well that's 1980, maybe in the end I will rate the years in order but I think 1980 was quite strong, the top 13 would have made my top 100 of the whole decade.
1981 we will start with the song that just misses the list, its a great megamix with a rap over it by
101 The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel – Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five

Ok here goes 1981 and we start 1981 top 100 with 100 The American - Simple Minds
There are songs that are making these lists that woudl probably not make later lists, for a start I have no idea how I am going to reduce 1983 into just a top 100, it could be a top 200 and be better quality than this year. Not to say that this is a bad song, its great but just less competition. This song reached #'59 in the UK. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfGDFgdmdvo&list=RDZfGDFgdmdvo

99 Tonight I'm Yours (Don't Hurt Me) - Rod Stewart
My favourite era for Rod Stewart is the early 80s, he has another song to come which may surprise people how high up it is. This single reached #8 in Uk and 20 in the US, it was pretty much a worldwide hit.

98 Gloria - U2
Like Simple Minds previously this is another song that I didn't know at the time, think I entered this in Hit Factor and it bombed a bit but I recovered with my sing off. It reached #55 in the UK.

So far every song has had a Celtic connection and that will continue with a Scottish Gaelic singer who decided to go disco, how this every happened I have no idea. My mum actually knew her personally as she also entered Gaelic singing competitions. I cant wait to read Wikipedia to see how this song happened anyway...
97 Japanese Boy – Aneka
sorry. Look I had to include this as it was played in my house so much when I was 10 we all loved it then, total absolute cheese. It was a UK number one and huge across many parts of the world.
can't really follow this so back tomorrow.

I love "Japanese Boy", but prefer her second single "Little Lady".

96 My Own Way – Duran Duran
The Celtic connection ends now. We have the first appearance for Duran Duran in the lists, we will see them many times over the next 5 years. Duran Duran's 4th single its not the strongest they have done but they needed a follow up to 'Girls On Film'. It reached #14 in the UK.

95 Penthouse And Pavement – Heaven 17
Only appearance in 1981 for the band that split from Human League, surprisingly 'Fascist Groove Thing' just missed the cut. This reached #57 in 1981.

94 Spellbound – Siouxsie and the Banshees
Also only appearance for Siouxsie not doing quite so well in 1981 but this is still a very good song. It reached #22 in the UK.

93 Dead Ringer For Love – Meat Loaf (with Cher)
If I had done a standard Top 1000 those last few songs wouldn't have made it but I think this woudl have sneaked in. One of the most played videos I remember when I was 10 and still took things very seriously, I really couldn't understand why they were so mad at each other. and now of course I can see it was very heavy flirting hehe This reached #5 in the UK and very surprising it wasn't a hit in US. Taken from Meatloafs third album 'Dead Ringer'.

92 Wedding Bells – Godley & Creme
I really liked Godley & Creme at the time, they made very good videos but they have better songs to come. This reached #7 in December in 1981.

91 Tears Are Not Enough – ABC
First appearance for a pop/soul band that we will see quite a bit of in the next list. This was their debut single released in October 1981 and reached #19 in the UK.
