12 Fade to Grey – Visage
Another Hit factor song and probably a song people would guess was coming although it could have been 1981. I marked this done hard in Hit factor as it isn't rock in any shape or form. It is one of the best synth pop songs ever though and brilliant video. Seeing this again I think Gotye stole some ideas from it. It reached '8 in the UK.

11 Going Underground – The Jam
Another obvious song just outside the top 10. Just one of those songs that everyone at school liked, if you like pop, rock, heavy metal or disco you all liked 'Going Underground'. Probably why it was such an instant hit going straight in at number one.

I have time for one more so lets do
***********************NUMBER 10************************
Split Enz - I Got You
Now first of all I didn't know this song at the time but how many others fell in love with this song the same way I did. It was 'Neighbours', this brilliant song was always playing in the cafe. You had no wikipedia then so you just never found out what the songs were. It wasn't until Crowded House broke through big that I discovered their previous band was the band that did 'I Got You'. I guess it was kinda obvious once I knew. It is now one of my favourite songs of the 80s and would have been in my top 100 of the 80s for sure. It was an Australian/New Zealand number one and reached #12 in the UK.

***********************NUMBER 9************************
The Cure - A Forest
Now a song I didn't know at the time until I got the 'Staring at The Sea' compilation when I was a student. Definitely one of their best songs, this was their first top 40 hit reached #31.

***********************NUMBER 8************************
Simple Minds - I Travel
I don' t know if anyone was expecting Simple Minds to be in my top 10 in 1980. This reason this is here i that when I was a teenager we used to have regular discos at the village halls and the DJs that we had almost always played this song. I didn't know what it was for years calling it the 'Reet reet reet reet' song. Years and years later I eventually found it that it was a very early Simple Minds song. It has lots of good memories for me and a few not so good but mostly missed opportunities. One or two girls I nearly asked to dance to this but of course didn't. This was on Simple Minds third album 'Empires and Dance'

***********************NUMBER 7************************
The Clash -London Calling
Its very probable that this is Hit factor 3 effect again. Otherwise I have no idea why this made my top 10 , just shows you. Anyway from the classic album 'London calling' this reached #11 and was their biggest hit until 'Should I Stay Should I Go' was reissued in the 90s.

***********************NUMBER 6************************
Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry
The fact that we had Jona Lewie earlier on should have been a big hint that this was still to come. Not only one of the best Xmas songs of all time but one of the best songs of the 80s. It is the only Xmas song that I never tire off. It reached #3 in the UK.

***********************NUMBER 5************************
Blondie - Atomic
No not number one @alexrange, not even the highest Blondie song but yes its still bloody brilliant. As stated my joint favourite band at this time and on a different day this could be above the other song. It reached #1 in UK and just #39 in US.

***********************NUMBER 4************************
The Police - Walking On The Moon
Now we have the song I played more than any other in 1980, probably as space is one of those things that interests a 9 year old. I just loved the feel and atmosphere of this so much. This was another UK chart topper.

***********************NUMBER 3************************
Blondie - Call Me
We didn't have to wait long for the final Blondie song, now I expect most people have worked out one of the top 2 songs. Playing this so close to Atomic, I really can't separate them, just a little bit more poppy I guess. Another number one this time in the UK and US, probably the biggest hit in the top 10.

***********************NUMBER 2************************
Joe Jackson - It's Different For Girls
This was so nearly my number one but only because Joe Jackson has an even better song to come, I didn't think it was fair that this would top 1980. I didn't know much about alternative music when I was 9 but I got into Joe Jackson because I thought he sounded like XTC, who will be doing very well in the next couple of years. This song and the one to come in a future list have just an amazing production and just an air of melancholy which still attracts me to music today. You are not always going to get happy songs in my list that's for sure and my number one certainly does not break that trend. I guess this should again have been a 1979 song but I am not doing 70s so it is in, it reached #5.

***********************NUMBER ONE!!************************
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Did anyone guess? Firstly I didn't know this song when I was 9 but soon after it was in the background of my life, in the late 80s I began to appreciate it as I was a New Order fan by then and in my student days I played it all the time. It is a song that will never go away and has actually featured heavily in two TV shows I am watching right now '13 Reasons Why', for obvious reasons, and 'Stranger Things 2' both shows deal with being an outcast and if you ever feel lonely, sad, depressed, etc etc it is a go to song. I wish I knew it this song better when I really needed it. On first issue the song reached #13 but really it is more than a chart position, it is a song for every generation.

well I guess in 1981 it's not going to be Shaddup You Face or the Birdie Song and not one of the many medleys or anything by Shaky.
Not sure your view on O Superman - one people either love or hate. For me the latter.
My own favourite song of 1981 is "Will You" by Hazel O'Connor. Won't be yours but may feature.

Shaddup You Face is for me not the worst top 5 hit of 1981. That honour goes to that awful "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine. Not sure how I'd place SYF against O Superman. At least it doesn't go on 8 minutes.
