The next generation of potential pop stars have been highlighted by the BBC Music Sound of 2018 longlist.
Sixteen emerging artists have made it onto the list, now in its 16th year, which has previously included names like Adele, Frank Ocean and Dua Lipa.
This year's crop includes the youngest ever nominee, 15-year-old US pop singer Billie Eilish.
She's joined on the list by two other teenagers, rising R&B star Khalid and singer-songwriter Rex Orange County.
Their names were selected by a panel of 173 music experts, including critics, broadcasters and DJs. Image copyright Interscope Records
For the first time, the panel also included former nominees, including Stormzy, Ellie Goulding, Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander and last year's winner, Ray BLK.
After a couple of years where grime and UK rap featured heavily on the longlist, this year's selection has swung back to pop.
Mononymous Scandipop artists Sigrid and Alma are both tipped for success, alongside experimental eight-piece Superorganism, whose members hail from the UK, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Eilish, meanwhile, has become known for her twisted take on pop, notably on the single Bellyache, where she casually imagines murdering her friends over a backing of acoustic guitar and gut-churning synths.
Hackney-born rapper Not3s also makes the cut, thanks to his viral hit Addison Lee, while indie four-piece Pale Waves, who have been championed by The 1975, look set to break into the mainstream after building a cult following in Manchester.
The full longlist is as follows:
Alma Neon-haired pop star with a punk attitude Billie Eilish Devilishly dark pop songs from LA IAMDDB Sultry vocals and jazz-tinged soul Jade Bird Putting a British spin on Americana Khalid Rising R&B star and teenage diarist Lewis Capaldi Raw and compelling piano balladeer Not3s Playful MC with bashment beats Nilufer Yanya Guitar-driven psychedelic soul Pale Waves Inseparable Manchester indie quartet Rex Orange County Vibrant, vulnerable pop writer Sigrid Norwegian pop star in waiting Sam Fender Hard-hitting indie rock from Newcastle Superorganism Multicultural pop experimentalists Tom Walker Gravel-voiced singer-songwriter Yaeji Korean-American house innovator Yxng Bane Drake-certified UK rapper
Radio 1's Annie Mac said she was "super excited" to see so many "young and innovative artists" on this year's longlist.
"Some acts will be brand new to UK audiences and many have already started to make an impact," she said.
"I can't wait to be a part of their journey and see what the year ahead has in store for them all."
The top five will be revealed in January on BBC Radio 1 and BBC News, with one artist announced each day from Monday 8 January.
The winner will be revealed on Friday 12 January during Clara Amfo's show on Radio 1.

Is it just me, or does this list include more and more acts who have already had hits, for every year that it exists ?
By my reckoning:-
Khalid already has 1 gold and 3 silver singles, including one Top 5, one Top 10 and one Top 20 hit Yxng Bane already has a gold single, and a second Top 40 hit Alma has already had a silver single which was a Top 20 hit Not3s has already had a silver single plus 2 additional Top 75 hits Sigrid has already had a Top 75 hit
Of course, the panel can use whatever criteria they choose to determine eligibility. But they get no points from me for "highlighting the next generation of pop stars", after they have already become pop stars.

I think they need to play things a bit safer as it is so hard to get new music into the charts but overall I think this is the best list in a while, only one guitar insight of course and even that is showered in synths, Pale Waves. Shame it is more a Sound of 2017 though but those are the times.
Really like Rex Orange County thought it last single could have had huge cross over appeal but 2 blatant swear words just spoil the whole song as yeh they are edited on radio but then they play it on Spotify and there is no edit.
Pale Waves with my heart, Sigrid with my head but I think Khalid will win.

Wonder how much Khalids record label paid the BBC to get him on that list. He no doubt is the favourite but that is because he is the most exposed and well know act by a mile. Like people say he broke through a long time ago. Shouldn't even be eligable

I'm not terribly familiar with Khalid's work, so I just searched him on the OCC's website. So far he has had...
2 top 10 hits 3 top 40 hits 4 top 75 hits 8 weeks in the top 10 31 weeks in the top 40 46 weeks in the top 75
Furthermore, his 3 top 40 hits to date are all currently in the top 40 right now.
That looks like the kind of success that would justify the BBC's decision if he actually won Sound Of last year!

Aren't Pale Waves the ones that sound like a female 1975 or am I mixing them up with someone else? If I've heard of 7 acts on the list, then you know they aren't that hidden and have had some success already.

can't find the rules but yes, alma has also had a big hit (chasing highs)
pretty sure it's the labels that rule these lists alma and sigrid have big label money behind and so far they haven't delivered despite the huge investment and having lots of airplay and being featured in many top playlists

I just found details of how artists qualify for selection on the BBC Sound Of 2018 website. It includes the sentence...
"They must not have been the lead artist on a UK top 10 single or album by Monday 23rd October 2017 and not already widely known by the UK general public."
...Interestingly, there's an equivalent BBC Sound Of 2017 website and that carries virtually the same sentence except that the rule then was top 20, not top 10. Alma sneaks in whereas if her hit had been last year she wouldn't've.

I see so both Alma and Khalid qualify as their solo singles went top 20 but not top 10,

Glad to see Alma and Sigrid here
My new favs are: Billie Eilish, Sam Fender and Tom Walker
Tom Walker sounds like new Rag'n'Bone man, think that he ends up in the top 5
Also all chances to reach top 5 for Alma, Sigrid and of course Khalid
