HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 24th NOVEMBER 1985

After just over three years since their Retro-Chart debut with Young Guns (Go For It) Wham! finally achieve their first number one single as I’m Your Man sweeps Talking Heads aside.




Number one on three individual charts this week has helped I’m Your Man climb to the top, particularly as it didn’t feature on three other charts. Opinion seems to be divided on this one as it mirrors its climb to the top of the Official Chart.


The last few weeks have seen a few tussles at the top of the chart but it was a pretty comfortable victory for Wham! The Waterboys remain locked in second place with The Whole Of The Moon, but even that song is in decline.


Last week’s number one, Road To Nowhere, shares the honours at number three with Pet Shop Boys whose debut hit, West End Girls, soars into the Top Ten and looking like a contender for a future number one.

Dee C Lee completes the Top Five with See The Day continuing its chart ascent in its fourth week on the chart.


This week’s highest new entry is from Aretha Franklin with Who’s Zoomin’ Who, in at number 19, giving her two records in the Top 20 as Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves dips out of the Top Ten this week to land at number 15.


There’s a huge climb this week from Phil Collins, who has teamed up with Marilyn Martin on Separate Lives, up 17 places to number 13.


Special mention to Jennifer Rush who notches a twentieth consecutive week on the Retro-Chart with The Power Of Love. It made its chart debut all the way back in July, but couldn’t quite manage to break into the Top Five, eventually peaking at number six.

Shaky hasn't had a top 10 hit yet in 1985, his last single peaked at #11. I wonder how this one will get on in the UK chart. Apparently it was planned for last year but postponed because of the Band Aid release.

Made more difficult by the fact I charted it earlier with its US run. Same for Whitney. And Mr Mister when that finally appears in the UK chart. And Prefab Sprout was charted by many last year when it first came out.

Whereas West End Girls we're all charting now, and that was in the US chart much later.

So my guess is that West End Girls will be #1 easily for a few weeks.
