11 Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone) - Glass Tiger
Just outside the top 10 we come to one of my favourite bands of all time. The album 'Thin Red Line' was my 2nd favourite album of 1986. Fronted by ex Scot Alan Frew who emigrated to Canada, I describe them to people as what Big Country would have sounded like if they had been influenced by Duran Duran rather than punk music. This song isn't even slightly Celtic though its just a big pop rock track which even features Bryan Adams on backing vocals. Glass Tiger are actually in my charts right now 32 years later. It reached #2 in the US and #29 in the UK. We even have two videos as its so special!!!

***********************NUMBER 10************************
The Bible - Graceland
Into the top 10 and we start with a contender for maybe the best non top 40 hit ever. Missed the top 75 twice, firstly hurt by Paul Simon confusion and then a dodgy performance on Wogan. Loved my almost everyone that has heard it, it really should have been a top 20 hit. It was released about three times in 1986,1987 and 1989 and its best position would be in 1989 when it reached #51. The followup single 'Mahalia' missed my revised retro charts , darn so now added to the Spotify playlists as it was a top 10 hit at the time.

You seem to be heavily into Heart.
Can't even remember Berlin's You Don't Know but compared to the fantastic Breath it's pretty tame.
How Will I Know is my 2nd favourite Whitney track but after the ballad One Moment In Time.
I see we can expect a high new entry from Level 42 in the next retro chart!

***********************NUMBER 9************************
Pat Benatar - Sex As The Weapon
Now one of the most famous No Limits powerplays ever probably because you never heard the song anywhere else, Radio 1 certainly didn't play it far to risque for them. I have probably seen it more than any other Pat Benatar video. It wasn;t a really big hit in US only reaching #28 and #67 here.

Bon Jovi – You Give Love A Bad Name
Another No Limits power play but this one was actually a top 40 hit, which is kind of unusual. The breakthrough hit for Bon Jovi worldwide, it was their first US number one. It reached #14 in the US.

***********************NUMBER 7************************
Madonna – Live To Tell And now my favourite Madonna song. It was the lead single of the ‘True Blue’ album very bravely she went straight in with a ballad. Taken from the soundtrack to her then boyfriend Sean Penn’s movie ‘At Close Range’. It gave her, her third number one in the US and peaked at #2 in the UK.

***********************NUMBER 6************************
Cutting Crew – I Just Died In Your Arms At six we have another very special song. This was the 7” single that started my collection properly with my own money. I won it in a radio competition and I had to choose a song from the top 40 and this was the one I asked for. One of the best power ballads ever and Cutting Crew are so underrated, they deserved much more success than they got. It reached #4 in the UK and would eventually reach number one in the US.

***********************NUMBER 5************************
Outfield – Your Love From one Uk band who were bigger to another who were huge in US and practically unknown here. ‘Your Love’ is their signature tune another song made famous by GTA:Vice City. I guess they were a bit too much The Police meets AOR Rock for the UK in 1986. This was also another No Limits powerplay as was Cutting Crew. The Outfield will appear again in later lists they have another big song to come. This song reached #6 in the US and a horrible #83 here.

Yes I loved Heart in 1986, they were practically ignored by UK radio at the time. Yes there will be some spoilers for future retro charts here.

***********************NUMBER 4************************
The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again
At four we have a song I didn't know at the time. I discovered this song through my wife when we first starting going out in 1991. She had it on a mixtape where she mistakenly labelled it 'Sweetness' it would be still a couple of years later when I found it its real title. It has now become one of my all time favourite Smiths song probably in my top 3. It reached #26 in the UK and was the lead single of 'The Queen Is Dead'

***********************NUMBER 3************************
Bruce Hornsby And The Range - The Way It Is
At three we now have the best song by a million miles on Hits 5. I played the song more than any other song in 1986. I absolutely love Bruce Hornsby's piano playing just give me chills every single time and on just about anything off his first 3 albums. 'The Way It Is' was my second favourite album of 1986. I probably listen to the two singles that came out after this more now as this song is so overplayed but it is sounding amazing again hearing it now. Sadly many of these lyrics prove that some things really do never change 30 years later sadly. It was a US number one but only reached #15 in the UK and remains his only top 40 hit in the UK which is just incredible. I guess he is more of an album artist here.

***********************NUMBER 2************************
Heart - These Dreams
I think most people woudl have been expecting to see this in the top 3 certainly if they are following my retro chart, the number one shoud be apparent now as well. No I will say it is the best power ballad ever and really it could easily have been number one. The song I looked forward to hearing whenever I watched No Limits. I would eventually buy the album but not for a couple of years. I saw Heart live in 1987 it was actually the first gig I went to without my parents. It was an amazing show but sadly it was a theatre and not an arena which would have had a better atmosphere. It was a US number one and missed the top 40 in the Uk in 1986 only reaching #62 but that was already their biggest hit ever in the UK. It would be later reissued as a double AA side with 'Never' and made number 8 in 1988.

***********************NUMBER ONE************************
Mr Mister - Kyrie
I just noticed there are 6 US number ones in the top 10 and all of the top 3. The followup single to the brilliant 'Broken Wings', this more powerful AOR track just has one of the best choruses ever which again just gives me chills every time. The AOR production on this is just perfection and would define my taste for the next 3 years. This was all influenced of course by No Limits and Casey Kasems US Top 10 my two main outlets for discovering music. I still watched TOTP of course and things like Snub TV but this was my music. This song spend 2 weeks at number one in the US and reached #11 in the UK. The album is damn good as well.
