47 China Girl - David Bowie
I did of course know who David Bowie was but it wasn't until this album 'Let's Dance' that I became a fan, yes sad I know but you got to start somewhere, I was only 12. Written by Bowie and Iggy Pop and produced by Nile Rodgers, it is still one of my favourites. It reached #2 in the Uk and #3 in the US. More Bowie very soon.

46 Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home) – Paul Young
Definitely one of the most played songs and videos of 1983. It is quite a downbeat track but that was kind of its appeal, made a change for the happy pop that dominated. Just a perfect single really. I didn't know it was a cover at the time mind you. It was a UK number one but no so successful in US only reaching #70 maybe because the Marvin Gaye version was better known there.

45 Take Me To Heart - Quarterflash
Now probably the song that is the newest to me in the whole list. I discovered this song when I was compiling my 1983 retro chart 2 years ago. How did I miss this great female fronted rock band, I think Heart were actually taking notes. This reached #14 in the US.

44 The Cutter – Echo & the Bunnymen
Highest appearance yet for them and probably in my top 5 Bunnymen songs, think it was the first one I bought although I did get 'Songs to Learn And Sing' soon after. This reached #8 in the UK.

43 Heart And Soul - Huey Lewis & The News
This was the lead single from the brilliant album 'Sports' although again this was actually a cover, the band Exile just missed the hot 100 with this in 1981' This reached #8 in the US and #61 in the UK.

42 Little Red Corvette – Prince
Highest appearance for Prince in 1983 and another classic not much more to say, this single reached #2 in the UK and #6 in the US.

41 Let's Dance - David Bowie
How can songs like this not make my top 40, well you have to remember this is personal. Although success, legacy etc will have an influence I have to go by the songs I love most. Saying that I did love this but not enough for top 40. A world wide hit it was number one just about everywhere.

40 Thriller – Michael Jackson
Another big hitter megastar with probably the most famous video of the 80s. Really surprised this wasn't a bigger hit than it was. It just reached #10 in Uk and #4 in US but i think the album did ok

39 I Melt With You – Modern English
Like most music on 4AD it tends to underachieve in the single chart, this is one of the best new wave songs ever which I discovered through GTA. I was sure this was a minor hit in the UK as well but cant find a chart position for it. I really never knew this was about a couple making love during a nuclear bomb, fun times 1983, but its the best way to go I guess. It reached #78 in the US.

38 What Is Love? – Howard Jones
Definitely one of my favourite pop stars in 1983 was Howard Jones, he was on such a run of big songs. He will have another very soon. Huge hit in Uk reaching #2 and #33 in US.

37 Rip It Up – Orange Juice
Quite a few exciting new bands coming out of Scotland and Orange Juice were one of the best. This was their biggest hit by far. It woudl be a long time until Edwyn Collins would return to the top 10. This reached #8 in the UK.

36 Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Last appearance for Michael Jackson with probably my favourite song of his. This was as big a hit as expected and was a number one in the UK and US.

35 2000 Miles - Pretenders
I think this is one of the first times I have said this certainly in 1983 but we have a No Limits powerplay. That is where i heard this song first and it is definitely one of my favourite Pretenders songs. It of course returns to the lower ends of the chart at Xmas. It peaked at #15 in the UK. Sorry for the creaky video.

34 Is There Something I Should Know – Duran Duran
Highest entry for Duran Duran in 1983 with this stand alone single and again making use of the current nuclear war fear but maybe not as successfully as Modern English. Really 'You are about as easy as a nuclear war?' what does that even mean, I think the fact that we managed to last another 34 years past this point that nuclear war proved to be not that easy after all and all involved thought lets not go there thankyou, hmm I see what I have done. Anyway it was a UK number one and reached #4 in the US.

32 New Year's Day – U2
I think this was the first U2 song I really noticed and showed that they were going to be something special. It was actually their first top 40 hit in the UK where it reached #10 and #53 in the US.

32 This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads
Another song I only discovered very recently and I was like how did I not ever notice this song!! This is just brilliant and I think it was my most played oldie of 2016 according to Spotify. I even own the best of Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime!!! and still I never noticed it!! Anyway pure brilliance used a lot on TV and movies recently and last time on a great opening scene to the new series of Agents Of Shield look out for it when it comes to UK TV later this month. Like most Talking Heads it really underachieved in the charts #51 in Uk and #62 in US.

31 New Song - – Howard Jones
To finish this batch another Howard Jones song and I think probably my favourite. It reached #3 in the Uk and #27 in the US.

A cover version of "Is There Something I Should Know" (together with iconic "Things That Go Bump in the Night" on double A-side) was the second number # 1 single for allSTARS* in my chart.

75 White Lines (Don't Do It) – Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Melle Mel, The Furious Five
Neil's favourite rap record of the 80s and yeh it would be in my top 10 as well. Shame the video is very very old. It was such an inventive and clever track and that bass line wow. This reached #17 in Uk and no top 100 in Us , I guess the lyrical subject was too sensitive for US radio at the time. Great thread, really enjoying catching up with it (and disagreeing with lots of it! ) White Lines reached number 7 though, not number 17.
