12th December 1993 - 18th December 1993
Another one as we catch up for the 3 weeks I missed, Laid spends 4 weeks at #1, surpassing Sit Down that spent 3 weeks at #1 in 1991 as the longest charting number 1 by James. Highest new entry this week is Nirvana's last single, it is easily my track of the week, enjoy the unplugged version below, in at #36 we have my other track of the week from Mark Oliver Everett before he went by the name Eels he released 2 albums as E, this was probably his first music video. At #24 and #28 we have two songs that only charted in the US Rock Chart but both are crackers from Meat Loaf and INXS. The b-side to All Apologies is at #39. Oasis first promotional single Columbia is at #42 and another great Eurodance song from Pandora at #64, the rest all charted well in the UK so are fairly well known.

I guess that brings 1993 to an end, it has been my favorite year so far from the 90s, such a wide variety of music entering the charts, Grunge, Europop/dance, Hip Hop, Rap, Pop, Rock and all their sub genres, a bit of something for everybody. Coming into 1994 I had just turned 11, my music collection mainly consisted of my parents vinyl records and whatever made the top 40 and stood out to a 11 year old boy at this point so my chart will be a weird mix of songs I discovered many years later and top 40 chart stuff that might look a bit out of place.
As we move into 96 I reckon Britpop and Alternative rock might take over, I would be 13 by then and it was all over tv and radio as the new big craze, I started buying albums in 1996 too

Oh I love that Melissa's song. I have long forgotten about it and it just burst out at me. It wasn't a song I'm familiar with, it didn't Chart here in the UK but it was a #25 hit in the USA but it stood out amongst this week's new discoveries

Highest new entry this week (#13) is the fantastic Saturn 5 by Inspiral Carpets, a fun, catchy slice of indie pop. Throwing Muses front woman Kirsten Hersh released the first track from her dubut solo album Hips and Makers featuring additional backing vocals from Michael Stipe of R.E.M, that is in at #26, it was a tough choice which one to make my track of the week so I chose both.

23rd January 1994 - 29th January 1994
1994 is off to as low start, there have been some god songs released so far but i'm struggling to find 5 songs a week worth charting, when 1993 was in full flow I was struggling to keep it under 15 new entries per week! A slow week means Inspiral Carpets shoot upto #1, it ticks all the boxes, catchy, straddles the line between indie and pop, has an element of nostalgia attached to it and its about rockets so what's not to like. It also gives Celine Dion an open goal this week as the highest new entry with The Power of Love
1. (13.) Inspiral Carpets - Saturn 5 2. (5.) Pearl Jam - Daughter 3. (4.) INXS - Time 4. (1.) REM - Find The River 5. (7.) Oasis - Columbia 6. (9.) D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better 7. (11.) Ooh, Enigma. Such an unusual sound back then when this came out and such a shift from the gregorian chanting. Great video too.
