-- ( -- ) (Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Below We're All Going To Go - Curtis Mayfield
The Kinks lead their way again with their Apeman and from apes to bears, as the theme song to Rupert The Bear gets the highest entry by Jackie Lee who is the same as the Jacky who did White Horses. This one also is not on Spotify - I don't know why as she does have a few songs on there and this is certainly her best known song.
I guess as a 5-year-old I would have liked that one more than many of the others above it in the chart, but this chart is being compiled by me as nearly 53 and not 5 years and 8 months old.

A great week for Elton John as he tops the chart and the cover of his song by Aretha Franklin also climbs. Looking ahead I don't see anything that great in the next 6 weeks or so, which means we'll either see Elton John stay at #1 for a long time or have something of a lower standard reach #1 (while others like Lynn Anderson have missed out due to time clashes, but that happens).

The Mixtures get the highest entry with the Pushbike Song. The song had a similar rhythm to "In The Summertime" by Mungo Jerry that was a big hit the previous year, although on this chart this one looks set to do better. Meanwhile Mungo Jerry completely changed their style for their second hit, which is coming up soon. Perhaps they were all riding pushbikes after losing their licence for having a drink and a drive.. In any case they were an Australian group who got airplay in their own country after a dispute as to who should be paying whom when the radio stations play a band's music. (Well actually I know that dispute happened but can't remember whether the Mixtures were beneficiaries, but there was an alternative version of Rose Garden that came about through that dispute).

I really think 'Border Song' is one of Elton John's great 'forgotten' songs.

I have more scored-up lists that I should be continuing with, although the playlists are temporarily on hold because of Pesach. They will resume soon too.

-- ( -- ) Somebody's Watching You - Little Sister -- ( -- ) Precious Precious - Jackie Moore
Not much on the new entry front this week: like I said it doesn't take off really for a few weeks. So the Osmonds are climbing from #10 to #4 and hopeful perhaps of wrestling the #1 away from Elton John, with the Mixtures moving into #2 and hoping they might do it.
The highest new entry is by Edison Lighthouse possibly singing about one of the other acts who enters the chart this week.

-- ( -- ) Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You - Wilson Pickett -- ( -- ) Inside Looking Out - Grand Funk Railroad -- ( -- ) Your Time To Cry - Joe Simon
In fact the Osmonds don't make any ground at all this week but hold in a static top 4, with Creedence Clearwater Revival looking hot for a #1 next week, whilst Mungo Jerry follow up "In The Summertime" with something that sounds nothing like it. Not sure how I'd describe this song, but it's far more rock based but is pretty much forgotten even though it reached #1 in the UK chart. It does have a rather strange title though.

I need to be posting these close to daily, or at least 5 per week, not a whole week between these.

20 February 1971 was the date of birth of my first proper girlfriend, and back then (early 90s) I compiled a chart for this week based on what was in the UK chart that week. I put Elton John at #1. I have no idea where I put anything else. In any case Elton John has been at #1 and is now on the way down, the Byrds are looking for their first #1 since 1965, and one McQuinn actually wrote too, unlike their #1 which was a Bob Dylan song, and they also charted well with Pete Seeger's take on Ecclesiastes.
The Temptations have slowed it down for this one and they get the highest entry, albeit outside the top 20.
Janis Joplin has been on the chart once before as lead singer of Big Brother Holding Company. Now a solo hit with a Kris Kristofferson song. By this point she is actually dead, having died last year a few weeks after Jimi Hendrix, same age, similar way.

T-Rex get to #1 for the second time.
As Paul McCartney reaches #2 this week, he is the 3rd of the Beatles to peak at #2, John Lennon did so last year with "Instant Karma" and George Harrison did with "My Sweet Lord". Of course Paul McCartney may still get to #1 with this song.
The highest entry is from Marvin Gaye with one of his classics.

Unlike the other Beatles before him, Paul McCartney gets his first solo hit to #1. John Lennon may also achieve one as he gets the highest entry this week.
Debuts this week for Olivia Newton John and Alice Cooper. I wasn't expecting the latter for another year.

"Jeremiah was a bullfrog!"... the wondrous song by Three Dog Night takes them to the top of the chart. This is therefore a bigger hit for them on this chart than "Mama Told Me Not To Come".
Alan Price had couple of #1s as part of the Animals before quitting. Georgie Fame topped the UK chart 3 times but never this chart. They join up for this week's highest new entry.

This week we now get the final Beatle charting solo but Ringo has the 3rd highest entry so matching the #2 peak of George and John or the #1 of Paul is unlikely.
Perhaps surprisingly Ray Charles gets the highest entry this week with a sort of easy-listening country song. East Of Eden's instrumental hit gets the 2nd highest entry.
At the top end, Three Dog Night get a second week with Alan Price and Georgie Fame putting in a strong challenge with a leap to #2.
