-- ( -- ) She's All I Got - Freddie North
The top 3 this week all became hits again in my chart when they came back. For John Lennon though I am not sure what I will do because I don't normally allow a single to be #1 for more than 7 weeks but now this one has had 8 weeks with its later runs included.
Of course the later runs didn't bear in mind a possible run at #1 in 1971 (or 1975).
Quite a few of these new entries have been covered or paradied. It didn't take long for "You Are Everything".. another version by Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye is just over 2 years away. A decade for "It Must Be Love" and about 4½ years until the parody of this week's highest entry.

-- ( -- ) Hallelujah - Sweathog -- ( -- ) Clean Up Woman - Betty Wright -- ( -- ) Save The Children - Marvin Gaye
At 8 minutes and 36 seconds, American Pie is now the longest song to reach #1. There was never really any doubt it was going to get there this week.
That song and the highest two entries on this week chart have all had UK cover versions that reached a higher position than the original. In two cases it was by one position but only the New Seekers would have the hit with "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing". New Harmony is the far superior version, if only because it has all the parts in it. The New Seekers version just repeats the same melody again and again ad infinitum. Whilst it is repeated a fair amount in this version too, there are some parts that differ.
The last 3 weeks of 1971 had 20 songs, 9 this week, 8 next week and 3 in the final week. Of those 20 "Save The Children" was in my opinion by far the worst of them. Marvin Gaye has made some great music but not this time...

The Faces are members of the Small Faces without Steve Marriott plus members of the Jeff Beck Group including Rod Stewart who is the lead singer on this song, having recently had a solo #1. The Small Faces had two NM #1s of their own and Jeff Beck had 1 on which Rod Stewart performed backing vocals.
Johnny Pearson's orchestra worked for the BBC and would perform backing tracks on Top of the Pops for the singers to perform live over. In 1980 they decided to ditch them and either the bands would perform live or mime or they'd show videos. That caused a strike and Top of the Pops was off air for 9 weeks but it came back. I made 4 episodes for the missing weeks, covering every 2nd week, and featured every hit once.
Anyway we've nearly finished 1971 now!

-- ( 37 ) You Gotta Have Love In Your Heart - Supremes And Four Tops (#25) -- ( 39 ) Coz I Luv You - Slade (#3) -- ( 40 ) Have You Seen Her - Chi-Lites (#4)
There were two versions of George Jackson but the main one is the fully orchestrated version and that one isn't on Spotify for whatever reason but I have it anyway. It isn't really fully orchestrated just not acoustic.
The chart of the year will soon follow and after one more week of a double weekly playlist, I will start getting into 1972. That will potentially pause again for the festivals but by then I'll be in March. As you see American Pie is #1 now so it won't be in March.

These have been the number ones of 1971. The first week the Kinks were spending their 4th and final week on top with Apeman. 09 Jan 71: 5 wks: Elton John - Your Song 13 Feb 71: 3 wks: Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have You Ever Seen The Rain? 06 Mar 71: 2 wks: T-Rex - Hot Love 20 Mar 71: 3 wks: Paul (& Linda) McCartney - Another Day 10 Apr 71: 3 wks: Three Dog Night - Joy To The World 01 May 71: 4 wks: Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar 29 May 71: 5 wks: Carole King - It's Too Late / I Feel The Earth Move 03 Jul 71: 2 wks: James Taylor - You've Got A Friend 17 Jul 71: 5 wks: T-Rex - Get It On 21 Aug 71: 3 wks: Curved Air - Back Street Luv 11 Sep 71: 5 wks: Rod Stewart - Maggie May 16 Oct 71: 2 wks: Cher - Gypsys Tramps And Thieves 30 Oct 71: 5 wks: John Lennon - Imagine 04 Dec 71: 1 wk : Tony Christie - (Is This The Way) To Amarillo 11 Dec 71: 3+wks: Don McLean - American Pie
15 number ones in total. 5 of them were number one for exactly 5 weeks. But what will be the number one of the year?
Of that list, the least successful song chartwise based on its better peak of the UK/USA was Creedence Clearwater Revival which only got to #8 in the USA (and #36 in the UK). Curved Air reached #4 in the UK and all the rest were either a #1 or a #2 in one or other, albeit Tony Christie took a long time to get there.

These are the 20 just outside the top 100: 120 Saturday Morning Confusion - Bobby Russell *119 Pay To The Piper - Chairmen Of The Board 118 (Where Do I Begin) Love Story - Andy Williams 117 Sunny Honey Girl - Cliff Richard *116 If I Were Your Woman - Gladys Knight & The Pips 115 Tom-Tom Turnaround - New World 114 Never Ending Song Of Love - Delaney & Bonnie & Friends 113 Liar - Three Dog Night 112 What Have They Done To My Song Ma - Melanie 111 Rainy Days And Mondays - Carpenters 110 Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum - Middle Of The Road 109 Jeepster - T.Rex 108 Don't Let It Die - Hurricane Smith 107 It Don't Come Easy - Ringo Starr *106 Lady Barbara - Peter Noone And Herman's Hermits *105 We Gotta Get You A Woman - Runt 104 A Natural Man - Lou Rawls 103 Let Your Love Go - Bread 102 Silvery Rain - Cliff Richard 101 Here Comes The Sun - Richie Havens 1971 had an extremely slow start which saw the Peter Noone And Herman's Hermits single spend 15 weeks in the chart in addition to the 1 where it entered in 1970 without ever climbing above #32. I need to confirm that really happened because whilst I do remember the start of the year being rather static, that looks strange to me.

It's like the charts now... and simply because of a formula and a shortage of new entries and the way the momentum works..
but Lady Barbara was in the chart 22 weeks!! and peaked at #27 in 1970. It then peaked at #32 in 1971 hovering about the lower part of the top 40 for a long time.

Elton John finishing at #1 in spite of having crossed over from the previous year was a lot down to the slow start. 1971 was a very slow starting year, compared to 1975 which is rather fast.
"American Pie" crossed from 1971 to 1972 and stayed 7 weeks on top in total. It's only listed as #32 in 1971.

I could recommend Dutch chart as additional music source for late 60s and early 70s, but you already finished them.
There were many native progressive rock groups and "Beatles wannabees" with English language songs.

I don't know why I didn't chart the Carole King songs separately as they were hits in both the UK and USA and when that happens I often did it, with one following the UK run and one the US run.
The chart is on points and Your Song was helped by a lack of competition, albeit it was competing with Rose Garden which entered around the same time and ended up at #10, the biggest hit of the year not to reach #1. Won't Get Fooled Again also peaked at #2, kept off the top by T-Rex. 10 years later the Who got to NM #1 with "You Better You Bet" in which they name-checked T-Rex.
