13 Fools Gold/What The World Is Waiting For - The Stone Roses
having just got into The Stone Roses just 2 months earlier, I really was not ready for this, it was a real wtf moment when I heard it. My mate who liked dance music played it all the time and he didn't really like their other stuff. I did eventually get there as I loved all this stuff in 1990 but 1989, not really. Of course this is now a total classic but I actually had a 'What The World is Waiting For' T-shirt which I think was a reaction to this song! It reached #8 in the UK.

12 Here Comes Your Man – Pixies
For so long they were that odd band you saw in 2 second clips on The Chart Show but when I started going to our local indie Student Union Potterow in 1990, I fully embraced everything Pixies but in 1989 it was just weird country song to me hehe. Yes last few months of 1989 I was in a bit if a transition and didn't really know where I was, i even had a girlfriend that I didn't even want or have much in common with but I was so mixed up I stayed with her, 1990 couldn't come soon enough.

11 Made of Stone - The Stone Roses
Yes you might be getting Stone Roses fatigue before this list is over but I can't understate what an effect that album had on me the first time I heard it, it literally changed my life. I literally bought it the day after I heard it the first time all the way through. Unfortunately this memory of hearing it the first time is tainted by the fact that the guys who were playing it and had me round at their house were only doing it as one of them wanted the girl I close to. Yes that same one from The Bangles song, really i didn't know her any better than he did so he wasted a lot of booze and time on me but at least I heard this!! It reached #90 in 1989 but would get to #20 on re-issue in 1990.

I'm kinda depressed last two days so going to do this top 10 to cheer me up hopefully they are all happy memories.
***********************NUMBER 10************************
Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire
This one is, it reminds me of my freshers week, it was on every video jukebox, they were very popular in pubs and student unions at the time. I love list songs we will have another in 1990 but this one is probably the best ever. I also love Billy Joel when he really rocks and this is one of his very best. I keep wishing he would make a sequel song but I know he has been asked many times and refused, maybe next year as its 30 years since 'Stormfront'. This gave him another US chart topper and his biggest hit in the UK since 'Uptown Girl' where it reached #7.

***********************NUMBER 9************************
Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes
Never released as a single before, this track became a hit in the Us thanks to its use in the movie 'Say Anything' one of my favourite Brat Pack movies ever. It is actually my favourite Peter Gabriel song and I nearly used it in Pop factor as my non UK single entry but changed my mind. That iconic moment when John Cusack holds the boombox above his head for the lovely Ione Skye, my other dream girl at the time. John Cusack was also probably the actor I wanted to be more than anybody, he was like my best self the me I wanted to be. Woh this isn't helping... anyway it reached #26 in the US.

***********************NUMBER 8************************
The Bible - Honey Be Good
Another year in the late 80s and another epic and amazing song from The Bible, this is probably my 2nd favourite Bible song and occasionally it is my favourite. Really why was this song not a top 10 hit, it was just too good for everyone, just a beautiful beautiful sophisto pop classic. Boo Hewerdine is really one of the most underrated voices and songwriters in the UK and this as per ever fell short of the top 40 reaching #54.

***********************NUMBER 7************************
1927 - That's When I Think Of You
All these sad love songs are really not helping. Anyway a new band from Australia who really seem to be following in the footsteps of their fellow Antipodeans Icehouse. This really could have been Icehouse but the album does have a more AOR feel and again is criminally underrated, they had multiple top 10 hits in Australia and won their equivalent of Brit awards for best new act single and album. And of course like most songs I loved this song missed the top 40 peaking at #46.

***********************NUMBER 6************************
Del Amitri - Stone Cold Sober
Oh dear things are actually getting bleaker. Along with The Stone Roses, 'Waking Hours' was my most played album of 1989 and most of 1990. It was a walk home late album and if I blew things with a girl, which happened every other week, I would sing this to the heavens as I walked home in the rain on The isle Of Skye. This was their 2nd single but it only managed #90 in the UK.

***********************NUMBER 5************************
The Pixies - Monkey Gone To Heaven
I heard two indie singles on a particular Richard Skinner show and at the time I never would have thought what an impact they would make on me. The fact i still remember the first time I heard this song makes it very special. in 1989 I had not really ever liked anything like this before, it was a very twisted rock but just so addictive. This was also their first UK hit reaching #60, I was learning to love alt rock.

***********************NUMBER 4************************Goodbye Mr Mackenzie - The Rattler
At last a happy song. The one and only hit they every had and their signature tune, if they played this at the village discos I just had to drag people up, I even remember the last girl I danced to this with , she was called Layla and was Irish, nice girl but unfortunately too drunk. This reached #37 in the UK. Not good enough for the record company I suspect, if only they had got a few places higher they could have had a TOTP.

***********************NUMBER 3************************
The Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums
Quelle surprise more Stone Roses, my top 3 singles are also my top 3 albums of 1989 so you can guess what one of those songs will be but what is the other, and indie classic and we haven't heard from them at all yet. This was the first Stone Roses song i fell in love with and will probably be the one that is always most special to me. It was their first top 40 hit reaching #34.

***********************NUMBER 2************************
Del Amitri - Kiss This Thing Goodbye
Probably my most played song of 1989 but it isn't the song at the top but it was very close.I know there isn't anything that incredible about Del Amitri, it was just the album that was in the right place at the right time. I just loved underachievers and I enjoyed willing songs into the top 40 but even after two attempts this missed both times. I guess a breakup song is a harder sell. It reached #43 in 1990.

I just realised that eagle eyed forum members will remember who's picture i had as my avatar for a year, while Gezza was covering this year.
***********************NUMBER ONE************************
The Sundays - Can't Be Sure
An absolute indie classic and taken from one of my all time favourite albums, I kind of missed The Cocteau Twins so The Sundays were my equivalent but they had a bit of Smiths in the mix as well. I will say that 'Here's Where The Story Ends' is even better but it wasn't a UK single it may feature in my 1990 list though, but can they really have two number ones of the year in a row. Harriet wheeler was just so cute and those last 3 secs are some of the best 3 secs of any song. I think this may have topped John Peels Festive 50 but it missed the top 40 peaking at #45. So we are done, hope you enjoy this. I do intent to do the 90s but it will be a long time, I have only 1990 so far.

Most of the tracks I like are lower down the countdown.
The top 20 just not my favourites in music apart from Texas, James and Billy Joel.
