61 When The World Comes Down – Magnum
We will end this double helping with one of the best power ballads ever by hard rockers Magnum. And like many songs in 1987, I can remember where I first heard them. This was on Moray Firth Radios brilliant Rock show. So sad that ILR radio is so generic these days. Sadly though this is before the era that Magnum starting getting hit singles in the charts and this only got to #96.

60 Big Time - Peter Gabriel
Of we go again, with one of the first singles I bought in 1987. Yes it is really Sledgehammers little brother in both sound and video but it some how has remained fresher as it doesn't get played as much. I didnt get the message of this song at the time, but success and yuppy lifestyle just didnt attract me one bit anyway. It reached #13 in the Uk and #8 in the US.

59 Sheila Take A Bow - The Smiths
Biggest song for The Smiths in 1987 and I think it might be their last appearance in these lists. Its just fairly standard Smiths but good enough to get you dancing if they played it in a indie club. This was their biggest hit while the band were still going and reached #10 in the UK.

58 It's A Sin - Pet Shop Boys
Another really good year for them and they have two huge songs in the top 60. First this orginial song which was teh biggest selling song in Europe that year. It was a number one all over the world including the UK. It peaked at #9 in the US.

57 The Motive - Then Jerico
Now we have a very underrated band with arguably their finest moment . Pop/rock really wasn't a big sound in 1987 and I feel that really hurt their success. Great band just not the right time. It really is such an epic song, think The 1975 are probably fans of this. They had been around for a few years and this was their first top 40 hit reaching #18. I bought this as well always forget how good this is. Its very Simple Minds as well yeh?

56 Something So Strong – Crowded House
The UK struggling to buy followup singles of new bands continues, although unusually they will get this success later. I guess this is a very simple little song after the heaviness of 'Don't Dream Its Over' it really wasnt a Uk radio song. It would be successful in our countries though. It reached #7 in the US and a rather pathetic #95 here.

55 I've Been In Love Before - Cutting Crew
Here we go again another under performing follow up single but this one is nearly as good as 'I Just Died'. I think it needed a bit more time for people to fall in love with it ironically. Cutting Crew are really one of the leading AOR bands in the UK. It would get to #24 on re-issue and #9 in the US.

54 I Say Nothing – Voice Of The Beehive
I think many are reading this list and thinking this isnt my 1987. Many huge hits are missing from this list but I tended to like sonsg from the edge of the charts just found them more interesting. One band that knew the edge of the chars better than anyone in 1987 were this band. Arguably the best singles band of 1987, everything they released was brilliant. This indie pop song got #45 and was their 1st hit.

53 Heat Of The Night – Bryan Adams
Bryan Adams is back. This is the lead single of his new album 'Into The Fire' and the first single I bought of his. It has a great guitar sound but I guess it is a bit cliche sound. It reached #6 in the US and peaked at #50 here. I guess it is still quite epic and it will always be special to me since I bought it. Yes I miss the action of buying something making it special

52 Back In The High Life Again - Steve Winwood
Now a song that every No Limits fan will know. I think this backed more montages than just about any song on the show. Very different to his 1986 monster hit but it is classic Winwood. He is just pure class. This song got to #13 in the US but only #53 here which for the kind of song it is in 1987 ain't bad at all.

51 Behind The Mask – Eric Clapton
I don't plan these things lol Yes he is out on tour with Steve Winwood right now. Now we have the first number one in my chart which features an ultimate super group in the video. With Phil Collins on drums, Mark King on bass and Jools Holland on piano and probably other stars as well. A very different and fresh sound for eric Clapton but that is because this was a synth pop tune originally by Yellow Magic Orchestra and then an rnb versio by Greg Phillinganes. The Clapton version got to #15 in the UK.

50 Little Lies – Fleetwood Mac
Its all gone a bit dad rock here, shame my dad didn't like all this bands or buy much pop or rock music Now we have one of Fleetwood Mac's best ever songs and probably my favourite song of 'Tango In The Night'. I think it has one of the best mix of voices on any Fleetwood Mac song, they never came together better than this. This song is one of their biggest ever hits getting to #5 in the UK and #4 in the US.

49 Welcome To The Jungle – Guns N' Roses
Now something really special has arrived. Probably the most exciting and important rock band of my teen years. I must admit although my sister was an instant fan, it took me awhile by 1989 they were my number one t-shirt band. This first hit is still so fresh, absolute classic. It woudl be their first top 10 in the US making #7 and it will eventually get to #24 here

48 Loaded – Deacon Blue
Now we have the first song I ever heard by Deacon Blue. I heard this on Anne Nightingale and It was an instant wow. This for me is a great lost single. I cant understand why they never re-issued this although I am sure it sold a lot of albums for them. Its just so happy and melancholy at the same time, like many of the songs on 'Raintown'.

47 Funky Town – Pseudo Echo
Now first of all I will say I bought this. I bought 3 singles that day in HMV in Glasgow, we didnt have an HMV or Virgin Megastore in Inverness it was like walking into Willie Wonkas for me. I bought this,'The Motive' and one song still to come. Just three brilliant pop rock songs thats all I will say. Yes this probably hasn't aged that well. It was based on a silly song in the first place. This got to #6 in the US and #8 in the UK. Sadly they had no further success in the UK, they were a pretty decent band.

46 Time Stand Still – Rush, Aimee Mann
We haven't seen these guys for awhile. I actually bought this but I loved it for the female vocal who I will later discover was the lovely Aimee Mann so that explained it. I think this is the last big single Rush ever did, they are more of an album band anyway. This just missed the top 40 in the UK getting to #42. It was big on US rock radio but wasn't a single there.

45 This Corrosion – Sisters of Mercy
Now simply wow. This band and single was like nothing I had ever heard before. I loved his image, just everything about this song and video was just so OTT but totally brilliant. I had heard of goths but never knew their music was so good. I was a bit of a fan from this song onwards to be honest. It got to #7 in the UK.

44 Labour of Love - Hue and Cry
Another Scottish band in this batch who have been threatening to break through for sometime. This was their first top 40 and by far the biggest hit single getting to #6. I bought both their first two albums but I did find them a bit to jazzy at times for me but this is total class.

43 Dear God - XTC
XTC return with their best single in years but due to its difficult subject matter got a ban from Radio 1, being a Powerplay on No Limits and being popular in the US, again mainstream radio play wasn't that forthcoming, wasn't enough to give it the success it deserved. It is now probably considered one of the very best XTC songs. It got to #99 in the UK.
