42 Never Let Me Down Again – Depeche Mode
Now we have one of my top 3 Depeche Mode songs. It was the best song they did when I saw them live 10 years. It is still so fresh, just love it so much. It really should be higher but I think Depeche Mode overkill when I made this list didn't help. It only peaked #22 here but it was a huge hit in many countries.

41 Don't Mean Nothing – Richard Marx
Now we have one of my favourite artist of the late 80s. This was his debut single and maybe much more rocky than most of the songs you know him for. For me Richard Marx was made for me as he kind of walked the line between Bryan Adams and Huey Lewis with this song. Many of his early hits haven't aged well but this still sounds really good. It reached #3 in the US but didn't do anything here at all.

40 Where The Streets Have No Name – U2
With three songs in the top 40, U2 have more entries than anyone else. My contrariness at school for not liking what everyone else liked meant I was probably a bit harsh on U2 at the time for being too obvious. Looking back now it is one of the albums of the year and all three of these songs are total classics. There is probably a 16 year old Ed Sheeran denier out there that will react like me in maybe 5 years time and realise they were maybe wrong. This was the opening track of 'The Joshua Tree' and the third single which the video was famously filmed on top of a building in LA and caused quite a bit of chaos. The single reached #4 in the UK and #13 in the US.

39 Just Like Heaven – The Cure
The stand out track on the 'Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me' album and one of their absolute best in my opinion. It was one of their biggest hits in the US reaching #40 there. It peaked at #29 here. We might see this song again in a later list.

38 Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
I must admit, this wasn't my favourite single of the 'Hysteria' album but over the years it has become the signature tune for Def Leppard so it has probably grown on me much more. Well you can't deny it totally rocks and it is actually the second biggest hit in the US reaching #2, it didn't do quite so well here getting to #18 but streams and downloads have now made it their biggest selling single in the UK and US.

37 Big Decision - That Petrol Emotion
Now we have the debut hit from a band from Northern Ireland with ex-Undertones members. This really was the big indie song that everyone was talking about but it just didn't quite manage to crack the top 40. It peaked at #43. The band will have quite a few more songs that just miss the top 40 sadly.

36 Come as You Are – Peter Wolf
Now we have a big US hit single from the ex front man of J Geils Band. Anyone who watched No Limits will know this very fun video, where Peter jumps all round his neighbourhood. The video really is the best thing about this song but who cares. It peaked at #15 in the US.

35 Jacob's Ladder - Huey Lewis & The News
More US rock now with a US only single from Huey Lewis which scored him another number one there. This one was written by Bruce Hornsby.

34 I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
More U2 and not much more to repeat saying, just another awesome song. This was their second number one in a row in the US and peaked at #6 here.

33 Wonderful Life – Black
Well we all knew this was still to come. Another gorgeous song from them and another top 10 hit reaching #8 in the UK. This is of course the song Colin Vearncombe will be remembered for most. It must be something to write a song so good that it makes you immortal.

32 China in Your Hand - T'Pau
We have seemed to hit a run of slow songs here. Although this was their 2nd number one in my chart, I do much prefer 'Heart & Soul' which is still to come. By the end of 1987 I think we were a little bored of this song sadly. It spend 5 weeks at number one in the UK.

31 It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) – R.E.M.
1987 was the year I really noticed REM, with this song and one still to come. In a very short time they would become one of my absolute favourite bands over the next ten years. This was one of those songs you always enjoyed coming on at indie discos as you woudl all shout 'LEONARD BERNSTEIN!!!' I don't know why! It reached #69 in the UK and would make the top 40 on re-issue in the UK in 1991 peaking at #39.

30 Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys
1987 was the year I started going to village discos regularly and this along with 'Criticize' that we had early was one of the songs I most looked forward to hearing. I never was a big Elvis fan but I just loved what pet shop Boys did with this. I think it started my love of cow bells to be honest. This was a UK number one and got to #4 in the Us.

29 Shattered Dreams - Johnny Hates Jazz
We have Wet Wet Wet earlier that took an age to make the top 40. This seemed to take months as well. Every week I would wish this into the top 40 and again it would fall short and be on Bruno's Chart Busters. They were pop stars in waiting, once they got that Top Of The Pops appearance their was no stopping them and the songs of their debut album soundtracked the next two years. Unfortunately another new teenybop band, as we called them then, have just broken through as well who I think will dominate more than them sadly. Just a perfect pop song it was a UK number 5 and got to #2 in he US. Much much better than Bros ever managed in the USA!!

28 Bridge to Your Heart – Wax
This for me was the song of the Summer of 1987. I think this maybe should be higher I think it was actually in my top 10 year end at the time. Just a brilliant brilliant pop song which just made you feel so good. It was the perfect soundtrack to walking through fairgrounds at Strathclyde park at the time. Another song that took ages to go top 40 but it would get to #12 in the end. Damn I could have you used this in Pop idol aww.

27 Wanted Dead Or Alive – Bon Jovi
Third single taken from 'Slippery When Wet' and its another awesome track. At the time this was probably my favourite song on the album. It is the strength and importance of 1987 to me that this only makes #27. It reached #7 in the US and peaked at #13 in the UK.

26 Still Of The Night - Whitesnake
Slight miscount U2 are not the most successful band in my top 30. That band is White Snake they have three songs in the top 30. They are all pretty much equally good but we will start with the epic, heavy and just pure class of 'Still Of The Night'. I saw them live two years ago along with Def Leppard and this was the finest moment in the whole gig. Why have I made this 3rd oh well, it is better than 'Here We Go Again' never mind. This was the first single taken from '1987' and it got to #16 in the UK and #18 in the US.

25 Pressure Down – John Farnham
His more famous song is still to come but this follow up single to 'Your'e The Voice' is just amazing. It was a No Limits powerplay and this single remix is one of the most 'eighties' songs ever. It's like they used every setting and button on the production desk. A song can really be so overproduced it actually makes it even better lol. I can't actually listen to the album version now as this has spoilt it so much. Anyway its a special song to me just love it so much sorry all. It only got to #78 in the UK but was a top 5 hit in the US.

24 Every Little Kiss - Bruce Hornsby, The Range
Bruce Hornsby has two singles in this top 30 and I cannot separate them really, they are two of the best songs ever. Basically anything in this top 25 is a pure classic to me. Anyway we will start with the 3rd single taken from 'The Way It Is' in the Uk, It was actually his debut single in the US where it got to #72 but did much better in 1987 getting to #14. OH btw all these last five songs all were No Limit powerplays oops.

23 Waterfall – Wendy & Lisa
If any song deserved to be a top 40 in the late 80s that wasn't it was this song. The debut solo single from Wendy & Lisa was just totally amazing. It would be reissued maybe 3 times and each time it fell short. They would of course get top 40 hits in the future but they never came close to matching this song for me. I think the production was maybe too heavy for the pop fans at the time. It reached #66 in 1987 and #69 in 1989.
