***********************NUMBER 2************************
INXS - Need You Tonight
That was such a close call, INXS - Kick will probably be my most played album in 1988 and I will be probably my number one T-shirt band but they narrowly miss out on the top spot with this funk pop rock classic. He really was the coolest person in rock right now and I loved this video at the time. In 1987 it gave INXS their only US chart topper but took a little longer to fulfill its potential in the UK, it only got to #58 in 1987!!!! But after a remix which made the song worse?? it got to #2 in the UK in 1988. Just like the song above it which also was not a top 40 hit the first time either.

***********************NUMBER ONE************************
Danny Wilson - Marys Prayer
There it is my favourite song of 1987, in fact it will probably be my favourite song in 1988 as well, it reached the top of my personal chart three times!! and I bought it three times as well as I was so desperate for it to be a hit. Although I own Danny Wilsons first two albums they have nothing else which comes close to this. This is classic pop perfection and similar to INXS, the US got it first. Well actually Ireland did as it got to #5 there on its first issue, then it reached #23 in the US on its 2nd issue, that time it only got to #86. Then finally the UK got it, really the masses were so slow in this period, in March 1988 it got to #3 in the UK with again similiar to INXS a remix but so subtlety different you wouldn't even know. Yes the biggest hit anywhere just took 18 months to happen. It was also a No Limits powerplay and a song I will never get bored of.

I loved Danny Wilson's Mary's Prayer, I was working in Dundee in 1988 so it was huge up here at the time.

100 Better Be Home Soon – Crowded House
We haven't had to wait very long for brand new music from Crowded House but somehow this single and album slipped through the cracks in the UK. An Australian Number two it missed the top 40 in US reaching #42 and flopped completely in the UK, maybe it was just a little bit to similar to 'Don't Dream Its Over'.

99 Atmosphere - Joy Division
An old song of course but new to the charts as it was released to promote a Joy Division Best of album. This is one of those songs that has just got more popular as the years have gone by and it get used to TV shows even now most recently 'Stranger Things'. I see this was a sales number one in New Zealand in 1981 but of course didn't chart in the UK until 1988 reaching #34. My sister bought this at the time but it was a bit too dark for me at the time but even then I loved the synths.

98 Only A Memory – The Smithereens
More indie and a band that I had heard of at the time but I don't think I had ever heard their music but since the internet is so US centric, the legacy of The Smithereens has grown over the years. I think I would have liked this at the time if I had heard it. Just great indie rock. This reached #92 in the US.

97 All I Wanted – In Tua Nua
One of my favourite new music discoveries of 1988, they were huge in their native Ireland but just didn't manage to get that crossover hit in the UK. If only they had that Eurovision promotion slot instead of Hot House Flowers, although like them too just not as much This Celtic tinged rock track was probably their most commercial track and not a million miles from what Texas would be having hits with soon, oh well. It did reach #69 in the UK chart though.

96 Finest Worksong – R.E.M.
You can see already my music taste in 1988 was really starting to move away from the top 40 although there will be plenty big hits to come. This was actually the first thing I ever bought by REM and really never stopped after this until their demise. It reached #50 in the UK and was their biggest hit so far here.

95 Walk On Water – Eddie Money
AOR was not gone in my chart but it was certainly in decline as it was even in the US. This will be Eddie Money's last appearance on these lists but its a pretty good song as well, he knew a good chorus. This was also the first and only song I bought by Eddie Money until a few years ago. It was another top 10 hit for him in the US reaching #9.

94 Bad Medicine – Bon Jovi
I have maybe been a bit harsh on Bon Jovi in 1988 as I loved them then, I even saw them this year on the Bad Medicine tour but in a list made in 2017 this is the only one that makes the cut at a relatively low position. And I think I was being generous it hasn't aged that well at all. Another US number one it peaked at #17 here.

93 Wild Hearted Woman – All About Eve
Now a band that I discovered through the Chart Show -Indie Top 10. They were just a brilliant mix of goth and folk, with just a great image and singer. This was their first top 40 hit reaching #33. I cant find an official video for this which is odd nowhere has it.

92 Johnny Come Lately – Steve Earle
Yes things are quite different in 1988. This was a country singer I discovered listening to Richard Skinner, mainly through his big song 'Copperhead Road' which is still to come, this was the follow up single. It reached #75 in the UK.

91 How Men Are – Aztec Camera
A Scottish band who only really knew for one song returned in 1988 with possibly their most successful record yet. This ballad followed their comeback single 'Deep Wide and Tall' but this time they cracked the top 40 reaching #25, this very current themed song about Toxic masculinity was maybe a bit ahead of its time. There is a huge song on this album when are they going to release it!!??

90 You Came – Kim Wilde
I said there would be pop hits to come and this is one of Kim Wilde's best even if it is almost PWL in sound, they did a very good job of copying it. This was Kim Wilde's biggest original hit for some time reaching #3 in the UK and #41 in the US.

89 Can't Stay Away from You – Gloria Estefan, Miami Sound Machine
This song reminds me of my first proper girlfriend as we listened to this at her house, think that was the 1989 re-issue. I did only go out with her for 4 days though these days that would just be considered 2 dates lol. My favourite ballad of her 'Anything For You' album. It reached #6 in the Us and #88 on first issue in the UK, in 1989 though it would get to #7.

88 Burst – The Darling Buds
1988 was the year that many C86 indie bands started to cross over to the pop charts and one of my favourites were the Darling Buds. This was the first single of theirs I bought, 60s tinged indie pop will always be one of my favourite sounds. This was their first top 75 hit reaching #50 in the UK.
