France rampant, they are too good for Croatia now Nice when you're gifted two goals by incompetent officials, shouldn't it be extra time now?

Nobody can look at that handball and say it was deliberate, that gave France a 2-1 lead at half time, it was crucial. As for the Griezemann dive to get a free kick they score from, until fifa start punishing that retrospectively, it will keep happening, should be a 2 game ban. As for Shearer being impartial because he's on the bbc, well they'd never be able to comment on anything controversial, what would be the point? As for the Lloris error, brilliant! Good job the ref had already given him a 2 goal advantage to defend like a schoolboy!

I'm sure if it was England in the final with these decisions, it would be a very different story
But it's not, and we're the WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!

At the end of the day the best team in the tournament won so congrats to France. Iβd like to have seen Belgium lift the trophy but they fell short when it mattered. Great final and one of the best World Cups ever!!

The team of the tournament will be interesting. Iβd like to see Trippier included but despite winning the golden boot no way should Kane be anywhere near it!

So that is where Duffy disappeared to, she became President of Croatia!

If we'd have won the World Cup by diving and bad officials, I'd have been embarassed, let's hope the winner's curse doesn't hit France next time eh?

This is the first time that France have finished a World Cup Final with 11 players on the pitch.

Iβll disagree with that assessment. The defender brought his head down towards the area that a striker could legitimately play the ball with his foot. Thatβs the way I saw it.

My point is that the decision in the England v Croatia match and the penalty in the final were both debatable. That's the big difference between goal-iine technology or the use of video evidence in tennis (both of which judge matters of fact) and using VAR for matters of opinion. FIFA tried to address that by allowing the referee to make the final decision in matters of opinion, but it still leaves us with some decisions open to debate.

Best World Cup final I have seen for a long time and with 6 goals in it. It seems strange France have only won it twice, with 6 countries winning it twice or more, the only countries that have won once is England and Spain.
Now we have to wait 4 years and 6 months for the next WC tournament, the English / European / Champions League / Europa League fixtures are going to be a bit of a mess, getting reshuffled and other International qualifications.
Also this was my 11th World Cup final I have seen in my lifetime.
Just like to say thanks to MisterHamster for all the results as per usual and loved reading all the stats. Its all appreciated.

The good news is that the gap between the next World Cup and the following one will only be 3 1/2 years.
My dad went to the 1966 final - it was the first football match he attended - but I was only five, so didn't really know anything about it. By 1970, I still wasn't very interested in football so didn't take much notice. The kick-off times weren't very helpful either. That all means that 1974 was the first tournament I really followed and this was therefore my twelfth World Cup. It's probably the one I've enjoyed most (certainly as an adult) and the final was definitely well above average.

Unfortunately the 2022 Qatar world cup is at the end if that year, not the start (21 Nov 2022 β 18 Dec 2022) so it's actually a longer wait than usual βΉοΈ

It looked to me that when the referee was reviewing the replay of the handball he just got the handball part itself and not what had led to it.
Just looking at the handball part itself, the defender moves his hand downward to where the ball is moving so it is hand to ball, not ball to hand, which is why the referee probably gave it.
Only looking at the full picture you see that the defender was probably unsighted.
They like having a single referee make the decisions but I'd prefer to see in big matches a panel of 5 referees for VAR incidents. For penalties and red cards it needs to be a 4-1 majority. For offside decisions a simple 3-2 majority will suffice, regardless of whether it's in favour of the attacking or defending team.
There is no VAR for free kicks in other areas of the pitch, nor corners or throw-ins, so there will always be occasions where a team loses out because of such a decision. I wouldn't want there to be, it would slow the game down too much.
If there were a lot of goals from corners and set-pieces in this tournament, I believe it must be a direct result of the referees stamping down on the defenders fouling opponents in the area by pulling them over. Once they stopped doing that, more goals resulted. Shows why the defenders were doing it.
Having said there were a lot of goals from set plays, I think Trippier's free-kick in the final was the only goal directly scored from a free-kick. Others came through the play after it.

My first World Cup which I can distinctly recall was 1978, but I have to say the 2018 Russia World Cup has been the best.
In the end the nation that defended like Mourinho's Man Utd, yet counter-attacked like Klopp's Liverpool were the victors (& the less said about their sterile goalless draw with Denmark (which saw both sides qualify for the last 16 the better). I still think Belgium were the best & most entertaining team in the tournament (echoes of Brazil 1982 vintage), and Croatia would have made a fantastic winner to inspire lesser nations in future World Cup's, but it was not to be.

There was also Ronaldoβs free kick against Spain. One of the goals of the tournament, but I donβt remember many other goals direct from free kicks.
