HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 20th JULY 1986    

Madonna manages a third week at the top with Papa Don’t Preach, although her lead is cut down slightly with her points tally now in reverse.



Hollywood Beyond made a surprise bid for the top as they climb to number two with What’s The Colour Of Money, having led the way for most of the week.

Stan Ridgway moves up to number three with Camouflage as Steve Winwood goes the other way, dropping two places to number four with Higher Love.  Haywoode completes the Top Five as Roses moves up to number five.

Highest new entry this week is from Robert Palmer, who follows up the number four hit Addicted To Love, with I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On, which debuts at number 22.

Biggest climb comes from Gwen Guthrie as Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ On But The Rent blasts its way into the Top Ten, up 21 places to number seven.

LP Van Morrison - In The Garden (1LP No Guru No Method No Teacher)

My highest new entry is with hindsight an increasing controversial song. At the time the story put about was Marr and Morrissey were listening to BBC Radio 1 when a news report announced the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Straight afterwards, BBC disc jockey Steve Wright played the song "I'm Your Man" by pop duo Wham! "I remember actually saying, 'What the f*** does this got to do with people's lives?'" Marr recalled. "We hear about Chernobyl, then, seconds later, we're expected to jump around to 'I'm Your Man'". While Marr subsequently stated that the account was untrue, he commented that it was a likely influence on Morrissey's lyrics. The band later commissioned a T-shirt featuring Wright's portrait and the phrase "Hang the DJ!"

The fact is "I'm Your Man" had been off the UK pop charts for several months by the time of the Chernobyl disaster (26th April 1986) and that "Morrissey hardly needed further provocation to attack Wright, whose highly ranked afternoon show treated all popular music as secondary to his madcap party format". (The antagonism was apparently mutual; former Smiths manager Scott Piering says that at a 1985 meeting, Wright and his producer both made clear that they disliked the band's music.)

However, it drew negative reaction from critics who construed Morrissey's lyrics to have a racist connotation. Paolo Hewitt in the NME wrote, "If Morrissey wants to have a go at Radio 1 and Steve Wright, then fine [but] when he starts using words like disco and DJ, with all the attendant imagery that brings up for what is a predominantly white audience, he is being imprecise and offensive." Fletcher says that the lack of any explicit indication the song was about radio meant "Panic" "could be construed as reviving the racist and homophobic 'Disco Sucks' campaign of late 1970s America." Scritti Politti's Green Gartside accused the song and the band of racism. Which Jonny Marr in particular got rather upset about.

Furthermore, this song was recorded in May 1986 at Livingston studio in London (during the day) where at the time the lyrics to the verses were incomplete. At the same time in the same studio the remaining members of Duran Duran with producer & guitarist Nile Rodgers were (during the night) demoing material for what would later become the Notorious album. In Nile's autobiography "Le Freak" he mentioned meeting the two songwriters of The Smiths and remarked about their very contrasting reactions to meeting the Chic & production hitmaker. Certainly Nile Rodgers believed that the negative response by the Smiths frontman towards him and the subsequent finished lyrics of the song were not coincidental. Which in the light of Stephen Morrissey's many recent utterances paints an increasingly vulgar picture ......

The chart is actually starting to slow down a bit - only 4 entries, not a lot of movement near the top.

The story behind the Smiths song is well known. It's a short song but is in two parts, one about Panic all over various parts of the country and another being a gripe about discos not playing music with meaningful lyrics. He should try going to folk-music clubs if he doesn't like dance music. Maybe the "radio station" didn't scan so he changed it to the "disco". The DJ doesn't actually choose what songs to play either, so really it's the radio producers and the playlist selectors that should be hanged.

Interesting that they released a new song at this point, and not a 3rd track from The Queen Is Dead, possibly There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. That one did eventually get released.

Michael McDonald has never had a solo hit before but has duetted a few times and also had a hit with the Doobie Brothers (What A Fool Believes).

Boris Gardiner also had a previous hit - an instrumental called Elizabethan Reggae in 1970, which peaked at #22.

So the only newcomer to the chart is It Bites.

It's 3 weeks on top for Madonna as The Real Roxanne peaks at 2 - Bang Zoom, almost at the Moon! Lulu's Shouts about rocketing almost to the Moon, 22 years late and her highest-charting single since Boom Bang A Bang 17 years earlier. Dollar get a 3rd top 5, and Macca extends his run of top 10's to 18 years (including The Beatles) or 15 years actual solo. Robert Palmer outdoes Addicted To Love, Chris De Burgh takes a lady in red into the 20, and there's a deluge of new tracks:

Doctor & The Medics return with their own song, Burn is pretty good at 24. Phil Fearon is back with a cover of the fab 1977 Tony Etoria UK soul minor hit, always under-rated, I Can Prove It - cos I said so! Sandie Shaw is also a 60's veteran returning with Frederick, a Patti Smith song. Anita Baker debuts with the fab Sweet Love, bringing smooth Jazz into the 86 charts, Bruce Hornsby's well-remembered The Way It Is is in at 42, Jesus & Mary Chain have Some Candy Talking, sweet fuzzy guitar! An 80's funk classic is in for Gwen Guthrie, the ever-charting Beach Boys add to the 60's veterans who were there in my first 1968 chart, Patti Labelle is solo with the lovely Oh People, Sinitta debuts with the trite So Macho (what was I thinking!?), 60's soul goddess Aretha is also back, 70's Hall is back with no Oates, Dreamtime, Lionel & Spandau enter with very poor efforts, 60's Quo are also back, and best of all it's The Smiths with one of their great singles, Panic.
